Sports On TV: The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’s 20 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 08.23.12

Fresh Prince theme song

On the last installment of Sports On TV, we tackled ‘The Wire’, a romanticized look at inner-city life and law in Baltimore, Maryland. If we drive an hour, then get into a fight on a basketball court and fly across the country, we’ll be ready for ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’, the 1990s sitcom that launched rapper Will Smith into mega movie stardom and gave ‘Silver Spoons’ star Alfonso Ribeiro an awesome paycheck for like seven years.

‘The Fresh Prince’ is one of my sentimental favorites (as longtime readers of The Dugout may know), so I was excited to tackle its 20 Greatest Sports Moments. I got something like 15 just from season 1 guest stars. Biggest possible thanks goes to Josh Koebert for helping me out with the images. Follow him on Twitter, he deserves your love for making this happen.

You’re probably already singing the theme song in your head, so let’s make this happen. The 20 greatest sports moment of ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’.

This video was taken, but if you mute it it looks exactly like a Matchbox Twenty concert. Bring up “Push” in another window and you’ll see what I mean. (via D Wizzle’s World]

ROFLMNBAO: Heading Down The Home Stretch!

Written by Ashley Burns / 03.28.12

As we head into the 4th quarter of the NBA season, the Chicago Bulls are the first and only team to have clinched a playoff spot so far, which wouldn’t seem like much of an accomplishment, except that Derrick Rose has missed 17 games this season. Meanwhile, the Miami Heat have entered that “we know we can kill anyone but we’re saving it for the playoffs” phase of their season, which doesn’t mean much, because they’ll still finish in the No. 2 spot – if they don’t gain ground and upend the Bulls, that is – because the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers most likely aren’t going to catch them.

In the West, the Oklahoma City Thunder showed they’re ready to start the playoffs now, with a 103-87 thrashing of the Heat on Sunday. San Antonio, though, has flown under the radar while becoming the second best team in the conference, and those cranky, grizzled veterans are probably the biggest threat to the Thunder’s Finals run. Well, except maybe the Lakers or the Mavericks. Or anyone.

This season has been strange.

Breaking: DJ Jazzy Jeff Buys A NBA Team Jersey

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.19.11

In West Philadelphia, born and raised, Will Smith now spends most of his days building Scientology schools – although he’s not a member – and throwing Marc Anthony awesome birthday parties at Miami Dolphins games. But much like Captain Steven Hiller, Smith is here to save the world, and of course by world I mean a NBA franchise. Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have purchased a minority share of the Philadelphia 76ers.

I can only pray to live in a world when a black man can one day purchase a majority. WELCOME TO EARFF, BILLBOARD!

According to CSN Philly, the couple acquired part of the team as it was being sold from Comcast-Spectacor to a group of investors led by multibillionaire Joshua Harris. Harris held a press conference at the Palestra on Tuesday morning to announce the plans of the team’s new ownership. “It is an honor to become part of this storied franchise. We have a lot of work to do, but we have a rich history, a strong foundation and a bright future,” says Harris.

And despite the fact that the lockout prohibits contact between owners and players, guard Evan Turner is already stoked about Smith’s purchase without even meeting the star of Wild Wild West.

We Like To Think It Happened Like This: Marc Anthony Had A Miami Dolphins Birthday Party

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.16.11

While today may be singer and actor Marc Anthony’s 43rd birthday, you can bet your salsa-loving butts that this week has been a non-stop fiesta of epic proportions. In fact, the real birthday fun actually took place Monday night in Miami, as Anthony invited some of his biggest celebrity friends to join him in the owner’s box as the Dolphins hosted the New England Patriots to open their NFL season.

Anthony is one of a handful of celebrities who enjoy a minority ownership of the Dolphins, including singer Fergie, Serena and Venus Williams, Gloria Estefan, Jimmy Buffett, and Jennifer Lopez, who was happily married to Anthony until the couple recently filed for divorce. While it’s not exactly the terrible saga of Frank and Jamie McCourt, you have to at least appreciate that even a divorce involving 1% owners can be incredibly awkward.

Thankfully, Anthony has some truly wonderful friends to help him through these hard times. As we saw on Monday night, Will Smith – the most popular actor in the world – stood by his good friend’s side and threw him one heck of a birthday week kickoff party as the Dolphins were curb stomped before their eyes. But this went far beyond a football game. Smith, Sean Kingston, Pitbull, Dwyane Wade, Fergie, and her drunk husband Josh Duhamel were all on hand to make sure Anthony got jiggy with it.

And you know, I like to think it went a little like this…
