China Always Has The Coolest Dog Shows

Written by Ashley Burns / 03.26.12

According to legend, when Genghis Kahn began his little campaign to conquer all of Asia and Europe, his most trusted sidekicks were his Tibetan mastiff, or gigantic dogs, that would eventually be responsible for the creation of most large breeds of dogs throughout the world. At one point during the 20th century, though, the breed became rare throughout the world and people feared that it would eventually become endangered. But like all cool vintage trends, someone eventually hipstered up and gave the Tibetan mastiff a second chance, and over the past 10 years the breed has seen a powerful resurgence.

For starters, the Westminster Kennel Club recognized the breed for the first time ever during the 2008 dog show, and that was the direct result of – and probably more likely the cause of – a growing number of competitions and exhibitions throughout China, involving just this breed. Over the weekend, the China Tibetan Mastiff Exhibition was held in Shenyang in the Liaoning province (it’s like the Chicago of China) and that massive beast above was the big winner of the event’s beauty contest.

If you’re thinking about getting in on this Tibetan mastiff action, you might want to start saving, though. Mastiff puppies sell for as much as $200,000 in the U.S. and Europe, and most breeders have a waiting list. But if you’re really fired up and ready to pass on that new house you’ve had your eye on, a man in Urumqi, Xinjiang (think: Los Angeles) nearly broke a world record when his mastiff, Black Pearl, produced a litter of 22 pups last month.

Now This Is How You Honor A True Champion

Written by Ashley Burns / 12.05.11

Yesterday morning, the town of Washington, Virginia (Pop. A few hundo) showed its pride and admiration for its most famous citizen – Grand Champion Foxcliffe Hickory Wind. Affectionately known as Hickory to her family and friends, the 5-year old Scottish Deerhound was declared the Honorary Grand Marshall of the town’s Christmas parade. Note to anyone organizing a Christmas parade: ALWAYS MAKE A DOG YOUR GRAND MARSHALL. Also, put a funny hat on it.

Hickory’s claim to fame, of course, was becoming the first of her breed to win the “Best in Show” distinction at this year’s Westminster Dog Show. And to make her year even more amazing and adorable, Hickory gave birth to a litter of 9 puppies last month, two of which joined her for yesterday’s parade festivities. I assume the other 7 have been sold. God, I hope they weren’t eaten.

So in case you’re keeping score, this is about a world champion dog and puppies, which are two of my 5 prerequisites for making this an awesome post. The other three are all breasts.

The Best Of The 2011 National Dog Show

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.25.11

If I had 1 million complaints about this planet, “too many dog shows” would not be one of them. In fact, there’s a pretty good chance that “not enough dog shows” would be near the top of my list. But at the risk of sounding spoiled in this Thanksgiving season, I can simply be gracious that we not only have the annual Westminster Dog Show and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, but also the National Dog Show, which took place last Saturday in Philadelphia. Complaint No. 2 would be that it takes NBC almost an entire week to air this thing.

This year’s big winner was GCH CH Steele Your Heart, a wire fox terrier that took the title of Best in Show. Other group winners included a Dalmation, Whippet, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Australian Shepherd, as well as my dog, who won the coveted title of Grand Eater of Mashed Potatoes Dropped on the Floor.
