Weekend Picks: Merry Christmas

12.24.10 Written by JOSH Z

Every Friday we pick the winners of the matchups that keep the yuletide the gayest. We call it Weekend Picks. Home teams are in ALL CAPS. Lines for Friday’s and Saturday’s games were provided by CentSports.. Img.

Tonight: Northeastern -7 over TEXAS STATE. Northeastern was the school of the guy that founded Napster. Texas State was the name of the football team in Necessary Roughness. Ah, what a horrible movie that was. Where have you gone, Scott Bakula?

Tulsa vs. Hawaii, over 74. This is the biggest total of the bowl season, and I expect both of these offenses to blow it out of the water. These schools finished eighth and third, respectively, in total offense in the regular season, and this Sheraton Hawaii Bowl would be a fine alternative to spending time with your family.

Christmas Day: FC Tokyo +110 over Avispa Fukuoka. The J-League is back, baby!

Cowboys -7.5 over CARDINALS. Can we count Arizona’s collapse without Kurt Warner as proof of the existence of God? Can I get a ruling on this?

Sunday: Redskins +7 over JAGUARS. Wow, Rex Grossman sure looked good after not having played for two years. That’s amazing, since everyone thinks their coaching staff is a merry band of idiots…

Ravens -3 over BROWNS. The Ravens need to win here to stay alive in the division hunt. That home playoff game looks pretty good to a franchise on the verge of a lockout season.

Vikings +14 over EAGLES. Look for Minnesota to rally around interim coach Leslie Frazier–and for Brett Favre to pace the sidelines. And with a high of 35 on Sunday, I’m also taking under 43.

Merry Christmas from all of us at With Leather.

Weekend Picks: See You In Philly

12.17.10 Written by JOSH Z

At the end of each week, we pick the winners to the weekend’s most patriotic matchups. We call it Weekend Picks. Home teams are listed in ALL CAPS.

Tonight: Heat -5.5 over KNICKS. The James Gang has won ten straight and has shown no signs of slowing down. But the Knicks have been playing well (8-2 in their last ten); it’s too bad that they’ll lose on national TV tonight.

Saturday: BYU vs. UTEP, under 50. Bowl season begins tomorrow with the New Mexico Bowl. I understand that UTEP is looking to grant amnesty to anyone that enters the stadium illegally.

Troy -3 over Ohio. The New Orleans Bowl sounds like a good time. One could make a little extra Christmas money by betting against the MAC this bowl season.

DAN LEVY, over 500. Dan’s 500th show celebration will be in Philadelphia. If you were one of the lucky few that received tickets, then I’ll see you there.

Sunday: COWBOYS -7 over Redskins. I’m starting Jon Kitna in my lone fantasy playoff appearance, which looks a lot better now that Mike Shanahan has decided to start the Sex Cannon.

PATRIOTS minus whatever over Packers. The lines aren’t out yet, but who cares. Aaron Rodgers isn’t playing and Tom Brady is. And even though no snow is expected, the Pats will still leave the Packers out in the cold. See what I did there?

Weekend Picks: Eats, Bets And Leaves

At the end of each week, we pick the winners to the weekend’s most patriotic matchups. We call it Weekend Picks. Home teams are listed in ALL CAPS. Img via FARK. Times via USA Today.

Tonight: Lakers -2 over BULLS (ESPN, 8). Nobody will cheer for Kobe, but I predict that he’ll be comfortable with the silence.

Saturday: Manchester City -0.5 over WEST HAM (ESPN2, 9:55 a.m.). West Ham is at the bottom of the Premiere League table, and even if you know nothing about soccer, you realize how much that sucks.

Army +8 over Navy (CBS, 2:30). Wikileaks has Army, 27-20. Of course, Janet Napolitano took Navy to cover and she is pissed.

Cam Newton over “Field” (Heisman Trophy Presentation, ESPN, 8). If it was Andrew Luck playing in the south and Newton on the west coast, I think this year’s Heisman race would have turned out much differently.

Sunday: Bengals +8.5 over STEELERS (CBS regional, 1). I’m also considering under 39; it’s the lowest total of the day, but with rain and snow in the forecast–the dreaded Midwestern “winter-y mix”–don’t expect the offenses to be doing much other than toweling off.

Broncos -4.5 over CARDINALS (Fox regional, 4). Kyle Orton scares the hell out of me right now; I’m starting him this weekend in a “win and you’re in” game in the BFL. Please, Kyle. DO NOT RUIN THIS FOR ME.

Boston College over MARYLAND (Fox Sports Net, 4). No line on this game yet, but count on Maryland being Maryland (i.e.: sucking) and reaching midseason form (sucking a lot) early in the season.

COWBOYS +3.5 over Eagles. Jon Kitna will wait another week before totally imploding all over Jason Garrett.

Weekend Picks: Hey You In The Photo. Get Off My Website. You Are A Dog. Dogs Know Nothing About Sports

At the end of each week, we pick the winners to the weekend’s most voluptuous matchups. We call it Weekend Picks. Home teams are in ALL CAPS.

Saturday. Illinois at FRESNO STATE, under 57.5. I still remember when FilmDrunk’s Vince Mancini referred to his hometown as “Fres Yes.” I still laugh at that.

Utah State +38.5 over BOISE STATE. No more statement games for the Broncos, who might be stuck in their own bowl game for the first time since 2002.

Southern Cal -6.5 over UCLA. USC is on probation, Coach Neuheisel. What’s your excuse?

Oklahoma -4 over Nebraska. Enjoy the Big Ten, Cornhuskers. Just don’t be upset when nobody can tell you apart from Wisconsin.

Sunday. Browns +5 over DOLPHINS. Peyton Hillis is the white Purple Jesus. Just having that guy around for the next few years might be enough to save Eric Mangini’s job.

Broncos +9 over CHIEFS. The over, at 48.5, also looks pretty tasty. I’m expecting everyone to score in this game except for Tim Tebow.

GIANTS -7 over Redskins. Man, I’m really starting to loathe the Redskins. The Giants have dropped two of their last three and are 5-6 against the spread. But still, it’s the Redskins.

Steelers +3 over RAVENS. When Pittsburgh gets points, I take ‘em.

Holiday Picks: Happy Thanksgiving

11.24.10 Written by JOSH Z

At the end of each week, we pick the winners to the weekend’s most tantalizing matchups. We usually call it “Weekend Picks.” Home teams are in ALL CAPS, and on behalf of everyone behind WITH LEATHER, have a great holiday with your home team this weekend.

THANKSGIVING DAY.

Lions +6.5 over Patriots. Did you know that Detroit is 7-2-1 against the spread? You do now.

Saints -3.5 over Cowboys. Almost 3000 yards passing with 22 TD throws. Another ho-hum year for Drew Brees, who still has 6 games left.

FRIDAY. Rockets over BOBCATS. No line on this game yet. Come on NBA, I NEED TO GET MY GAMBLING OUT SOONER.

Auburn +4.5 over ALABAMA. Sorry, Boise State.

SATURDAY.

Michigan +17 over OHIO STATE. Also going under 63. Jim Tressel hates scoring; he finds it to be an act of arrogance.

SUNDAY.

COLTS -3 over Chargers. Manning Face over Laserface.

Weekend Picks: Derek The Red?

11.19.10 Written by JOSH Z

At the end of each week, we pick the winners to the weekend’s most notable matchups. We call it “Weekend Picks.” HOME TEAMS are in ALL CAPS and times listed are ET unless otherwise noted.

TONIGHT.

REDS over Yankees. Homer “pick” infused by this comment. It just would have been awesome to have a Red be a former Yankee for once, instead of the other way around. But that would involve Derek Jeter saying no to $15 million a year.

BOISE STATE -29.5 over Fresno State +29.5. Another Friday night game for the Broncos. Do they not have high school football in Idaho? Or have they postponed it over fears of the next earthquake? Fresno State is 106th in Division I-A in 3rd down conversion percentage. That’s rough, especially when BSU hasn’t given up more than 20 points to an unranked opponent all year. (ESPN2, 9:30 pm)

CELTICS -8.5 over Thunder. Boston is one of five teams allowing less than 95 points per game. Oklahoma City is not. But hey…Kevin Durant and stuff. (ESPN, 7 pm)
