Shannon Briggs Had An AMA On Reddit

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.08.11

I’ve only recently started frequenting Reddit, mostly because it’s a treasure trove of creative humor and sometimes sincere conversations and intriguing debate. Needless to say, I definitely feel my age when trying to understand the lingo and hip Interweb speak, but for the most part the AMA (Ask Me Anything) threads are good for passing time on slow days. Rarely, though, does an athlete allow Redditors (am I saying that right?) to toss questions at him, but yesterday provided a refreshing change when former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs created his own AMA.

The thread has grown to more than 1,200 questions and comments and I assume that Briggs is still getting to them, but after the jump I’ve collected and organized (but not edited, because I respect the sanctity of poor Internet grammar) the questions that he has answered thus far. I only saw a few posts touching on the subject, but if I could ask one question it would be: What was it like having your nose broken, biceps shredded, left orbital fractured on top of a second facial fracture, and an ear drum blown in an all-out melee against Vitali Klitschko?

Because I imagine it would hurt a little.

Holyfield Wants Another Title Shot

Written by Ashley Burns / 01.20.11

Evander Holyfield is on a mission to become the oldest heavyweight champion in the history of boxing. The 48-year old is still pounding away as he seeks to win one of the major boxing titles to surpass George Foreman’s old ass after he defeated Michael Moorer for the title at age 45. On Saturday, Holyfield will fight 38-year old Sherman Williams in West Virginia, and if Holyfield wins, he’ll fight 45-year old Brian Nielsen in Denmark on March 5. Then if he wins that fight, he’ll take on 97-year old Irv Goldblatt in Boca Raton, Florida.

Actually, according to various reports, if Holyfield wins these next two fights, he’ll get his shot to break Foreman’s record, as the WBC (the World Boxing Council and not the World Barista Championship) has agreed to let Holyfield fight current champion Vitali Klitschko (Ed. – Hehehehehehehehehehehe… Klit). And Holyfield believes that people will pay big money to watch this happen.

Are you ready to rummmmmmmmmmmble, Fanhouse?

VITALI KLITSCHKO IS GROSS, NOT INTELLIGENT

Written by Matt / 10.15.08

Following his victory over Sam Peter for the heavyweight title this weekend, Vitali Klitschko did what any boxer would do: he soaked his hands in his three-year-old son’s used diapers.  According to Klitschko, it helps reduce swelling.

“Baby wee is good because it’s pure, doesn’t contain toxins and doesn’t smell,” the 37-year old boxer told Bild after he won back the WBC title on Saturday.

“I wrap nappies filled with my three-year-old son Max’s wee around my fists,” he said, adding he got the idea from his grandmother. “The nappies hold the liquid and the swelling stays down.”

That’s sound reasoning.  Because whenever I think of something pure, odorless, and toxin-free to help reduce swelling, I immediately think “used diapers.”  Definitely not ice.

CHINESE ATHLETES NEED MORE BEEF

Written by Matt / 03.07.07

Zhang Xinshi, a biologist from the Chinese Academy of Sciences who advises China's parliament, is calling for sweeping changes to the Chinese diet in order to produce athletes on par with western countries. He suggested that last month's brawl between the Queens Park Rangers and China's under-21 team proved that Chinese players simply weren't — ahem — beefy enough.

"You can't just say you aren't used to eating beef and drinking milk and leave it at that," Zhang said during a discussion of Chinese agriculture at this week's meeting of the advisory body CPPCC…

"We all saw the recent fight in England and they (the players) were beaten to a pulp. Sounds tragic? But if you are as strong as a buffalo how can they beat you up? Therefore I don't think we should advocate the Chinese grain-eating tradition."

I don't get it. I've got a Chinese menu right here, and there's beef everywhere. Beef with broccoli. Pepper steak. Beef lo mein. Beef beef beef. Are you telling me that 1.2 billion Chinese people are just eating rice? I find that pretty hard to believe. It seems like such a bowling diet. Boring. I meant boring diet. Solly Sorry.
