5 Reasons The Angry Birds Soccer Video Is Great, And 5 Ways to Make It Better

Written by Brandon Stroud / 10.06.11

Why This Is Great

1. In a world where Tim Tebow could throw a 100 yard touchdown pass to a great white shark through some combination of video editing and Powerade®, it’s great to see people actually setting up stuffed animals and hitting them with soccer kicks. If this was doctored in any way it would be a waste of time, but as it exists now, it’s … well, still a total waste of time, but a fun one.

2. I’m going to buy a pack of glow sticks and go out raving to that Angry Birds theme remix right now.

3. The video does not involve people making basketball shots from a great distance or getting super, super serious about it on Twitter.

4. When I saw the headline “Soccer players bring Angry Birds to life” on the UPROXX main page this morning I couldn’t grasp how they were going to do it; it was either soccer players in Halloween costumes dog-piling each other and breaking two-by-fours or someone was actually throwing birds at pigs. Thankfully neither of those things happen, even if the video devolves into people kicking balls at a dude in costume and making us listen to them laugh about it.

5. It’s way better than “Soccer players bring Words With Friends to life” video, which is just Europeans playing Scrabble.

20 More Wrestling Clips for Attack of the Show to ‘Discover’

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.20.11

There are two major groups of people who stumble upon videos of independent pro wrestlers doing goofy sh*t:

1. Wrestling nerds. They’ll see a video (or a gif) shortly after it happens while they’re browsing their favorite wrestling forum, stuck somewhere between the petulant name-calling and the latently homosexual discussions about whether or not wrestlers have “the look”.

2. Sports writers who don’t watch wrestling (meaning they infrequently tune in to Raw) who can’t believe what they’re seeing, toss a “viral video” tag on the clip and share it to millions of like-minded individuals despite the fact that its like four years old and everybody who likes wrestling has seen it.

This happened in a big way earlier this year when a clip of the Osirian Portal using hypnosis on their opponents and causing a colossal dance party started getting covered on everything resembling Deadspin as the “most illegal move in wrestling move in history!” and again a few months later when “amazing 9-year old wrestler” Mr. No. 6 (who was six when the video first went up, hence the name) showed up on Jimmy Traina’s Hot Clicks. G4′s “Attack of the Show” has gotten into the antiquated pro wrestling clip game by featuring Chuck Taylor trying to kill ant-themed wrestlers “The Colony” with an invisible grenade. It’s funny, and you should watch it whether you like wrestling or not.

Who Cares If You’re Going Viral With That, You’re Still Out

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.11.11

By way of Jimmy Traina’s Hot Clicks comes the most athletic thing you’re going to see on a baseball diamond today (and probably tomorrow, unless decades of watching the boring-ass All-Star Game have steered me wrong). The image grab from the video to the right makes it look like one of those mock-up Avengers posters where everyone’s falling and jump-kicking at nothing. There isn’t a lot of context for the video outside of me just telling you what happened, so here it goes — instead of plowing through the catcher like so much Scott Cousins, the runner goes for a diving cartwheel thing OVER the catcher and pulls it off, but the umpire is just like “f**k you, you’re out” like he was Willie Mays Hayes pulling up short on a slide. Watching the video it does look like he’s out, but that ump was ready to call him on his bullsh** before he was even tagged.

Of course, my mind went to terrible pop culture, and all I could think of watching this was Tony Micelli’s terrible Superman dive through a catcher’s easy tag from “Who’s The Boss?” (at about the :20 mark)

Maybe Tony should’ve brushed up on his capoeira before trying to slide.

Press Hop 2 Has More Michelle Beadle

Written by Ryan Walsh / 08.03.10

presshop

The second edition of DJ Steve Porter’s Press Hop was released last week, and Michelle Beadle makes a couple of appearances, which is good news for anyone who likes cute blondes who can talk sports. 90s era Mike Tyson and Deion Sanders also get some face time, which is good news for everyone.

Despite those advantages, I have to admit that the first version is better. There’s more of a reliance on the absurdity of the press conferences rather than the beat itself. That being said, how awesome are Lennox Lewis Mitch Green and Mike Tyson dressed? I guess that’s why boxing is going the way of the buffalo. Video after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
