With Leather Live Discussion: UFC On Fuel 7

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.15.13

While the Renen Barão fight that we all want to see involves Dominick Cruz, who will be sidelined for most of 2013 with a torn ACL, we could do a lot worse than watching Barão face off against Michael McDonald tomorrow at UFC on Fuel 7, live from London at 3 PM ET. At just 22-years old, McDonald has the chance to become the youngest champion in UFC history, and while people want to make sure that we point out that it’s just an interim title, we wouldn’t want to crap on the kid’s accomplishment in the event that he does win.

Aside from the main event, though, Saturday’s card is filled with some young, exciting talent, and I’d love to talk at great length about the potential of guys like Jimi Manuwa, Dustin Poirier and Ryan Jimmo – as they should offer us exciting fights – I’m focused on one guy and one guy only – Gunnar Nelson.

Yes, the Icelandic fighter has won 10 consecutive fights, including his UFC debut at UFC on Fuel 5 in Nottingham last September, dating back to his MMA debut in 2007. But I don’t care about that. What I care about is that he shares a name with one-half of the 80s pop rock duo Nelson, which delivered us the greatest song ever written by man, “Love and Affection”.

For so long, I have asked for the gods of organized belligerence to deliver me a new fighter to champion, and I believe that man is Gunnar Nelson. Don’t let me down, good sir.

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.15.13

Kevin Hart and a group of celebrities you’ve otherwise barely heard of will hit the court tonight at 7 PM ET on ESPN for the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and I can pretty much sum it all up for you like this: everybody’s gonna run around, the former players will make some lay-ups, Kevin Hart will yell jokes, Nick Cannon will roll around in a pile of Mariah Carey’s money, Usain Bolt will run fast but suck at shooting and people will wonder who the hell Ryen Russillo is.

Also, every time someone mentions Sean Elliott, I will think it’s Sam Elliott and then I’ll be bummed that it’s not.

Ronda Rousey Isn’t Having Any Of Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos’ Jibber Jabber

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.14.13

First and foremost, there are some exciting rumors today regarding that whole MMA in New York thing that we talked about a few weeks ago and the possibility of a 20th anniversary UFC event at Madison Square Garden. But I’m a man of the present, not the future, so I’m ready to focus on a plethora of Michael McDonald jokes for this weekend’s UFC on Fuel event, live from London, and next week’s highly-anticipated UFC 157 PPV, featuring our favorite female fighter Ronda Rousey and her UFC debut as the Women’s Champion.

Rousey, of course, is fighting Liz Carmouche, who we admire a great deal as well, but that isn’t stopping Cris “Cyborg” Santos and her manager Tito Ortiz from trying to make the story about the Rousey fight that will probably never happen because Cyborg can’t cut enough weight. Because she’ll die or something dramatic like that.
