Dear Twitter, Can You Please Stop This Stupid Sh*t Already? Thanks

Written by Ashley Burns / 04.01.13

In case you weren’t watching, Louisville Cardinals sophomore guard Kevin Ware suffered a pretty awful injury when he broke his leg during yesterday’s win over the Duke Blue Devils. In any game, Ware’s broken leg would have caused basketball fans to cringe, his teammates to reportedly faint and vomit and his coach to turn white in the face, but since this was the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament, it seemed like Ware’s injury was magnified x10000000.

A few things happened in the aftermath of the injury. Some fans watched in horror, as some fans reportedly started a “Let’s go Duke” chant. Some of our peers declared that they wouldn’t post videos or GIFs of the injury out of respect, while others jumped right on it. One sports writer used Ware’s injury to milk a few last drops of traffic out of an old article, while others made fun of him. And some a-holes started Kevin Ware parody Twitter accounts, while other people were just normal human beings and not sociopathic douchebags.

So today I make this plea to Twitter – stop letting bullsh*t accounts like @KevinWare_5 happen.

UPDATE: Twitter suspended the account. Swift mutha-f*ckin justice, With Leather style.

RIP, Sweet Brooklyn Nets PR Twitter

Written by Brandon Stroud / 03.19.13

Last month, With Leather briefly celebrated the joy that was the Brooklyn Nets PR Twitter account, a fun oasis in an otherwise dry and arid NBA social media scene. That account was responsible for the epic deadpan you see in the header, and for other, totally asinine statistical gems like this:

Reggie Evans headband

Sadly, that beautiful voice has been silenced.

Johnny Football Loves The Texas Longhorns, Hates Everybody On Twitter

Written by Brandon Stroud / 03.13.13

Johnny Football Longhorns tattoo

Photo credit: Everywhere On The Internet

If you missed this yesterday, it’s a photo of Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “Football” Manziel sporting a suspicious-looking Texas Longhorns tattoo on his ribcage. Your first thought is, “this can’t be, Johnny Football would never get the Longhorns logo tattooed on his body!” Your second thought should probably be, “well, I don’t know, it IS Johnny Football, and it’s not like the rest of his tattoos are high art.” If you told me “Johnny Manziel has a butterfly with a tiger’s face in the wings tattooed on the back of his neck” I’d probably believe you.

Anyway, Johnny wrote an impassioned explanation of the situation in the editorial section of yesterday’s New Yorker, professing his love for the Aggies and promising his fans that he’ll never … wait, sorry, I got my notes mixed up. He did this:

Of course, Twitter has two ends (the asshole and the other asshole), so the conversation didn’t end there. Some fans (“fans”) started being Twitter People to Johnny about the photo, and because John Football is the type to register for online classes to avoid going to college with other college students, he handled it delicately.

Here are a few of his interactions with the world of Trollgaze:

Brandon Knight’s Career Will Never Be The Same Thanks To DeAndre Jordan

Written by Ashley Burns / 03.11.13

By now you’ve probably seen it, DeAndre Jordan’s life-altering dunk on Brandon Knight in last night’s ridiculous 129-97 Los Angeles Clippers victory over the Detroit Pistons. Blake Griffin has called it the “Dunk of the Year” and Twitter instantly turned it into the 2013 version of the Dominique Wilkins poster I once had hanging in my bedroom as a kid. Poor Brandon Knight, just minding his own business as he traveled into the paint against one of the NBA’s most aggressive dunkers. Knight can go ahead and take a seat next to John Lucas now, because his career won’t ever be the same.

That’s not hyperbole. Dunks like this change lives, because no matter how well Knight performs the rest of this season or every season beyond until he retires, we’re always going to hear his name and laugh – “You mean the guy that DeAndre Jordan killed?” As fast as we move from meme to meme and GIF to GIF in this Internet era, we never forget. Just like Manny Pacquiao before him, Brandon Knight was dragged through the streets of Meme City last night after that “Just another day at the office” dunk by Jordan.

Ekpe Udoh Traded From Milwaukee To St. Olaf

Written by Brandon Stroud / 03.07.13

Ekpe Udoh Betty White

Ekpe Udoh of the Milwaukee Bucks had one mission: meet beloved American actress/hacky commercial spokesperson Betty White. The only problem? He didn’t know how to do it.

Betty White Ekpe Udoh Tweet

It’s a good question, and who could blame him? Betty White is not only awesome in her own right, she’s the last remaining ‘Golden Girl.’ Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty are all dead. It’s a reasonable goal, especially if you’ve got enough travel time and fame as an NBA player to make it come together.

As you can see by the photo at top of the post, Udoh made his dream come true with an LA-area visit to the set of ‘Hot In Cleveland.’ It was a long road, though. Here’s a quick look back at Udoh’s quest from Betty White inception to Betty White execution, courtesy of Twitter, and a little help from our friends at Ball Don’t Lie:

Blake Griffin Got Punched In The Dick And Made The Best Joke About It

Written by Brandon Stroud / 03.06.13

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka has some anger issues. See also: that time he tried to rip off Mike Dunleavy’s arm. He’s the kind of guy where if somebody came up to you and said “Serge Ibaka just flagrantly punched a dude in the nuts during a professional basketball game,” you’d be all, heh, classic Serge.

If you missed it earlier in the week, Ibaka got called for a flagrant 1 foul late in the fourth in OKC’s 108-104 victory over the LA Clippers for, without grace or mercy or subterfuge, hauling off and whaling on Blake Griffin’s nuts. Everybody has an opinion about it. Kendrick Perkins thinks Griffin deserved it because he flops a lot, and that it should’ve been a “double foul.” Kobe Bryant says he probably would’ve smacked Ibaka in the mouth.

The one constant has been the assumption that Ibaka would get suspended, because seriously, watch the video. Griffin isn’t flopping, he got punched in the junk by a guy whose Eagle Claw could rip a hole in steel. News of the punishment came in yesterday afternoon, and sure enough, Serge was suspended for … wait, he wasn’t? Really?

The NBA announced Tuesday that Ibaka’s foul was upgraded to a flagrant 2 and he was fined $25,000 for striking Griffin in the groin area, but Ibaka was not suspended.

Before the ruling was handed down, Griffin said he didn’t “see how it could be let go” by the league with only a fine.

“I’m not going to cry,” Griffin said after practice Tuesday. “I’m not going to complain.” (via LA Times)

Griffin handled the situation as well as anybody could, but achieved legendary status for last night’s tweet, which cuts to the heart of the matter while remaining light-hearted and brand-conscious:
