The National Foodball League Makes Us Hungry For The Football Season

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.04.12

As I’ve mentioned in the past, much to your undoubted excitement, I spend way too much time on Twitter and Tumblr all for the purpose of entertaining you. I mean, if I don’t scour the Internet for GIFs of Brooklyn Decker and Kate Upton, then who will? Sure, I could be rewarded with a Pulitzer one day, but I’ll settle for a Peabody.

In between the GIFs and the jugs, though, I stumble across random sites that simply make me giggle. Today’s chuckle maker comes courtesy of the Tumblr page, The National Foodball League, which combines three of my favorite things – football, puns, and food. If I can appeal to Will Riggins, the artist behind these delightful food (and other) images, I would one day like to see Ryan Bananahill, Veggie Bush, and Flan Carpenter.

I’d make them myself, but I’m fat and it won’t end well.

Internet Artist of the Day of the Week: Double Scribble’s NBA Fan Art

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.15.12

I’m a big sucker for fan art – well, appropriate fan art – and that’s why I’ve been pounding my desk all morning over the news that the world’s biggest patent troll is going after Etsy’s new $40 million investment. But while soulless thieves are going after the sources of the Internet’s showcases for art and inspiration, they’ll thankfully never be able to crush the actual artists. At least not yet. I’m sure they’ll find a way eventually.

My Internet Artist of the Day of the Week goes to the guys at Double Scribble, a Tumblr site devoted to NBA fan art.

Double Scribble is the lovechild of basketball and art; two of Nick Kastner and Mike McGrath’s favorite things in the world. From the coldest, murkiest depths of Cleveland, OH (and now to some extent, some obscure part of North Carolina) Nick and Mike have forged a blog out of blood, sweat and tears in their unwavering vision to provide you, the viewer, with a never ending source of basketball related art.

And it’s pretty awesome. I’ve been shuffling back and forth through its archives since a friend emailed the link last week and there is just a ton of great artwork on this site that has really inspired me to consider re-launching my web comic series, “The Erotic Adventures of a Sports Blogger.” Spoiler alert: it’s sad and gross.

After the jump, I’ve included many of my favorite efforts of Double Scribble’s authors, but I encourage you to check out the submissions that they’ve posted from other artists as well. It’s a highly recommended worm hole to limit your productivity today.

‘What The F*** Is Michael Jordan Wearing?’ Calls The Fashion Police On His Airness

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.04.12

I have this theory that Michael Jordan sincerely believes in his head that he is still 32-years old. That would explain why he parties with his sons, who are in college, and recently married his longtime girlfriend and model Yvette Prieto, who is fittingly 32. But it’s also the only thing that can explain why he’s so damn bipolar with his fashion sense.

I don’t want to suggest that Jordan always dresses like he lost a bet – which isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility – because he does have his moments of dapperness. But there is just so much photographic evidence to the contrary that it makes perfect sense that someone created a site devoted to Jordan’s lacking fashion sense.

“What the F*ck is Mike Wearing?” bluntly calls out the NBA’s greatest player of all-time and possibly worst owner of the last 10 years for his terrible style choices, and I’ve included some of their best/worst choices after the jump, as well as some of my own picks.

Capybaras That Look Like Rafael Nadal Is Our New Favorite Tumblr

Written by Ashley Burns / 04.12.12

On July 14, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are going to play a charity exhibition match at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeau Stadium, as they’ll attempt to break the all-time record for attendance at a tennis match while raising money for the Real Madrid and Rafael Nadal Foundations. The current record was set in 2010 when more than 35,000 people watched Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams in Brussels.

That’s awesome news because both foundations work to assist disabled children and these two rivals – if you call Djokovic owning a 7-match winning streak against Nadal a rivalry – are sure to put more than 40,000 butts in the seats for a good cause. And hopefully at some point, a fan says that Nadal looks like a capybara so I can make a better segue than this.

Self-described “person with some interests” Laurie Ainley recently launched the new Tumblr, Capybaras That Look Like Rafael Nadal, that indeed points out that the two-time Wimbledon champ looks a little bit like a capybara, or the largest rodent in the world. Is this just a little mean? Maybe, but I’ve long contended that capybaras are adorable, so we’re treating it as an honor.

Someone Made A Hey Girl Jeremy Lin Tumblr

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.23.12

When it comes to the Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” meme, I consider myself a bit of an expert. While I didn’t exactly create it, I was responsible for a Twitter account that Gosling himself had shut down because he said I “burgled” his name. And I mean, good lord, even when he’s being a dick, he’s just so damn adorable about it. But his meme has endured because he’s a good actor and it’s so incredibly fitting, especially when he sits down with reporters and actually reads some of the “Hey Girl” lines.

That’s why I was a little disappointed when I stumbled across a post on Buzzfeed about the new Tumblr account, “Hey Girl, it’s Jeremy Lin”, of which the tagline states: “Because Ryan Gosling Can’t Jump.” Look, I get it. Lin is hot right now, so let’s give him a meme. But let’s not burgle the Gosling meme when it doesn’t even relate to Lin. He’s a good guy, by all accounts, and he’s been a sensational addition to the New York Knicks, but he’s not a stone cold dreamboat like Baby Goose.

As someone who often tries too hard to make memes happen, we can do better than this. But I don’t like crapping too much on someone else’s effort, so I’ll let you guys be the judges, juries and executioners.
