Bye Bye Jeff Fisher

Written by JOSH Z / 01.27.11

The NFL’s longest-tenured head coach is on his way out. Jeff Fisher, who was coaching the Tennessee Titans as early as 1994 (when they were still the Houston Oilers), is packing up his office.

According to an NFL source close to the situation in Tennessee, the move could be announced as early as Friday, although it’s uncertain if Fisher’s departure will be termed a firing, a resignation or a mutual parting of ways.

Though information about Fisher’s situation was scarce Thursday, it was confirmed by a league source that he will not return to coach the team in 2011, contrary to what was previously expected. Fisher was said to be in the process of negotiating the terms of his departure with Titans owner Bud Adams.

Fisher turns 53 next month; he was due to make over $6 million coaching the Titans in 2011. Hmmmph. So instead of keeping either Fisher or his adversarial quarterback Vince Young, Titans owner Bud Adams seems to be casting both of them loose. This is just like that Shakespearean play where the one guy is really sad and then he endures a life-changing event, but then life still sucks. Which one was that again?

Moral of the story: Do not mess with Bud Adams, because he will F you right in your A.

Meet Vince Young, ‘Elite’ Quarterback

Written by JOSH Z / 01.20.11

Tennessee Titans quarterback (for now) Vince Young really is a double threat. Not only can he do ridiculous things, he can say them, too. Consider his comments in the wake of the team’s comments that they would either trade or cut Young before 2011, with my added emphasis:

“I’m going to go into [a new] organization, the team, and compete. That’s all I can do, and let them make their own decision after that,” Young said. “Definitely I am a starting quarterback, an elite quarterback in the NFL. I want to go ahead and start. But like it always is, the coaches have the last word.”

–Marcellus Wiley/ESPN via PFT.

That’s right, Vince. You’re an elite NFL quarterback. Just look at all those times that you started all 16 games in a season, or all those years you threw for 3,000 yards or more, or all of those playoff games that you won…Because that’s what elite quarterbacks do.

But you never did any of those things, Vince. No, your MO is to show up shirtless in clubs with other dudes and running out on your coach, to the point where he’s either calling the cops to make sure you don’t kill yourself or fetching your shoulder pads out of the stands. Great job, Vince. See you in Cincinnati’s training camp next summer.

Kerry Collins Throws Ball Fast, Concusses Teammate.. On The Sideline

Written by samerochocinco / 12.27.10

We all know the NFL is trying to minimize the concussing hits during games, but what do you do when a quarterback hits his teammate in the head with the ball and concusses him, and to add to it, that teammate wasn’t even a receiver, but a defensive end on the sideline?

Roger Goodell’s probably going to just fine everyone on the Titans for their terrible play, am I right? It’s a joke because the Titans are miserable this seas- oh you do get it? You just don’t think it’s funny. Carry on then.

From the Tennessean:

Not much has gone right for the Titans lately, and things took an even more unusual turn Sunday when defensive end William Hayes was injured in a freak accident.

Hayes was standing on the sideline when a Kerry Collins pass sailed high off the field and hit him in the head. Hayes was unable to play the rest of the game because of a concussion, Coach Jeff Fisher said.

“That’s kind of how the game went,” Fisher said. “I’ve never had a player leave the game with a concussion after getting hit with the ball on the sideline. But we’ll see how he is this week.”

Somehow this incident comes off as a great representation of what the Titans have accomplished this season. They easily could have had a better record with a healthy Vince Young and also much less yelling and fighting with Jeff Fisher and Young.

At the stage they are in the season, I still don’t see how Tennessee’s gameplan every time doesn’t consist of “give 20+ carries to Chris Johnson and whoever else we have in our backfield.” Some people probably think Johnson will get tired running that much, and that’s when you go to the OTHER part of the plan: have Johnson be quarterback, too. I’d put good money he wouldn’t hit his teammate in the head and give him a concussion.

Houston Texans Take On The Only Opponents They Can Beat: Each Other

Written by JOSH Z / 12.20.10

Here’s a fun clip of Houston Texans Brian Cushing and Antonio Smith getting involved in a scuffle during their game with the Tennessee Titans yesterday. Tennessee, behind the virulent exuberance of 37-year-old Kerry Collins, handed Houston their seventh loss in eight weeks. Eventually one has to fight the fights he can win, I suppose, and there aren’t many of those in the AFC South.

The easy joke here is “Roid Rage,” as Cushing was suspended for the first four games of this season after testing positive for excessive levels of Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). But the fact is that hCG is a hormone that occurs naturally in the female body during pregnancy, while an anabolic steroid is technically synthesized. Now don’t you feel stupid. If Antonio would have just handed his boy some pickles and ice cream, everything would have been fine. Vid via TBL.

Andre Johnson Had A Mic On Sunday

Written by Ashley Burns / 12.03.10

When I saw that there was a video of Andre Johnson with a mic on him from Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, I thought, “Damn I’m handsome, and this should be one hell of an entertaining video.” Then I watched it and I thought, “This is great because I didn’t sleep very well last night and this was boring enough to do the trick.” Unfortunately, Johnson either didn’t say much leading up to his remarkable pounding of Cortland Finnegan or the people at Sound FX took some liberties with the editing.

Either way, the video at least confirms what we already knew – Finnegan was getting tired of Matt Schaub and Johnson dinking and dunking the Titans’ secondary into submission and he figured he could get under Johnson’s skin. And he did, and we all thank him for it, because watching Finnegan get his ass kicked was certainly one of the highlights of my 2010 NFL season. As for the highlights of Johnson’s lip service, I guess the best of his chatter was telling Finnegan, “Don’t get frustrated now” after he grabbed Johnson’s face mask for the first time.

But Houston QB Matt Schaub has the line of the day, as he told his teammates in the huddle: “Keep your poise now, let’s try to get them to do some dumb sh*t.” I’d say that getting Andre Johnson to punch you three times while pushing your face into the ground is some pretty stupid sh*t, so job well done, Texans!

Video of Johnson mic’d up after the jump as well as the fight that keeps on giving…

$25k Fine Each, No Suspensions For Texans’ Johnson, Titans’ Finnegan

Written by JOSH Z / 11.29.10

The NFL made a stunning series of decisions regarding this Andre Johnson fight from yesterday. Both players reportedly will be punished equally, which is a surprise when one considers the reputation of the instigator–Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan–and his overtly crass demonstration after his ejection from that game. But also, neither player will be suspended.

@Mortreport is reporting Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan each have been fined $25,000. Neither player will be suspended.

–@Adam_Schefter

That seems insanely low to me, and I openly question the logic of Merton Hanks and the guys making these decisions on the 17th floor at 280 Park. If you don’t want to suspend either guy during a division title run (especially with the Colts struggling in the AFC South), that’s fine. But how can you fine two different guys half of what you fined James Harrison, who was actually playing the game? Forget about the fight for a second; I don’t see how Finnegan’s antics after getting tossed didn’t warrant something extra from the 17th floor. Was that any better for the game than a defender trying to do his job? Considering Finnegan’s reputation, that might have been exactly what we were seeing.
