Wednesday Wild Card: Keibler, Brady, Beckham And The World Series Of Poker

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.09.11

A ton of stuff happens in the sports world each week and there are only two of us here to try to scoop up as much as we can and shove into all into your eyeballs like an ocular smoothie of awesome. So of course we’re bound to miss a few things here or there. For instance, did you know former WWE diva and current George Clooney love interest Stacy Keibler went golfing on her vacation from standing still and looking hot? See, this is the kind of stuff we shouldn’t be missing out on.

Thankfully, I keep a few hundred folders of random sports photos on my computer to cover up my incredible collection of adult anime stills, and I figured that we could clear a few of them out with this new weekly feature, the Wednesday Wild Card. Today we’ll pay a visit to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and see what he did to prepare for his loss to the New York Giants, while David Beckham signs some autographs, Kim Kardashian and Matt Millen cry, and the World Series of Poker pays out again.

Please hold your applause until the end.

The Best Of The 2011 Surf Dog Competition

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.27.11

This past weekend was about legends. It was about honoring the old guard and celebrating one sport’s superstars. As you can obviously tell from the banner image, that sport is dog surfing. On Saturday, the 6th annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon competition took place in Del Mar, California, and the event, hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, raised more than $100,000 for orphaned pooches. And I like to imagine that they all live in a really cool surf academy called “Surf’s Pup!” because that would be awesome.

The star of the weekend was Buddy, the 14-year old Jack Russell terrier, who not only became the first dog inducted into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame, but also won his fifth Surf-A-Thon title. He’s like the Boston of dogs.

“That last heat was probably the best of Buddy’s life,” Bruce Hooker, Buddy’s owner, said during the ceremony.

Adding: “But it still wasn’t as good as the heat he got from those poodles after the event, AMIRIGHT?” Who doesn’t love a good dog sex pun?

Other highlights included the first-ever dog surfing world record, which was set by Australian Kelpie Abbie’G when she rode a wave 65-freaking-yards, as well as a failed attempt for most dogs on one surfboard. Better luck next year, adorably terrified dogs!

New Favorite Thing: The Surf Dog Hall Of Fame

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.08.11

Who says that September 11 has to be a downer? This Sunday, as we all settle into our couch grooves for another season of NFL action, an event of epic proportions will be taking place in Del Mar, California. Not only will dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes be taking to Dog Beach for our favorite annual event – Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon – but the Helen Woodward Animal Center will also be announcing the first inductee into the event’s brand new Hall of Fame. That lucky pooch is Buddy, a 14-year old Jack Russell terrier.

“This honor is validation that Buddy’s a good surfer,” [Buddy’s owner Bruce] Hooker told HuffPost Weird News. “He’s a special dog.”

Former surf journalist Nedra Abramson, who now organizes the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, agrees, hence the decision to honor him as the first inductee.

“Buddy does it for the right reasons,” she said. “He loves to surf — and he does turns! It’s like he’s a reincarnated surfer. He’s brought the sport great notoriety.” (Via Huffington Post)

There’s plenty of other praise in the article about why Buddy and Bruce do what they do and the insinuation that the dog is surfing for “the right reasons” is hilarious enough. But screw it, the event is incredible and it helps dogs find new homes, so they could tell people that Buddy’s doing it to score major dog poon and I’d still rub his tummy and call him a good boy. Now if I could just get my dog to learn how to do anything.

Check out Buddy in action after the jump.

The Best Of The 2011 Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.06.11

The 6th Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held Saturday in San Diego, California, as “ruffly” 50 canines vied for the title of the world’s most adorable surfer. Hundreds of people gathered to witness the event, as the dogs were dressed in Hawaiian shirts, leis, and sunglasses while surfing both solo and with their owners. This year’s big winner was an Australian Kelpie named Abbie Girl, and it was her second time winning the event. She’s a regular Kelly Slater. You know, if Kelly were a dog. And female. Whatever, it’s Monday.

You may remember last year’s tribute to surfing dogs set to quotes from Point Break, and while it’s hard to recreate that kind of magic, I am simply happy that we finally have a sport that consistently produces a quality product without stirring up controversies about criminal behavior, drug use and womanizing. However, I can’t help but think that a sport in which all of the females are fixed might be a great place for Travis Henry to make a comeback.

The Most Important Sports News Ever

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.04.11

Gracie is an English bulldog and she surfs. That’s pretty much all I need to say, but she also gives lessons and pees on people, so she might be the coolest English bulldog since my recently departed sweet prince, Bruno R. Burns. So while everyone continues to act like the Super Bowl is some big deal or ignore the Miami Heat giving up a 21-point lead in a matter of minutes against the Orlando Magic last night, the real news today is that Gracie went surfing.

And if you’re going to be one of these “That’s not sports” trolls, then I’ve even added an extra video after the jump of a dog preparing for the Great Outdoor Games. Did I say dog? I meant pig. Yes, it’s an awesome day to be alive, friends.

Surfing Dogs Invade Huntington Beach

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.23.10

Surf Dog

Our typically dependable With Leather Left Coast Bureau took the week off so our California news has been rolling in a bit slower than usual (did you know the Lakers won the NBA Championship???) but that’s no excuse for missing out on the biggest surfing competition of the year – Surf City Surf Dog. For the past two years, the city of Huntington Beach, California has hosted this charity fundraiser at which our four-legged canine friends show off their gnarliest surfing skills. You know, I just have to say that someone in history was the first person to ever dress a dog like a human, and it’s just a shame that we don’t have a holiday for that hero. Then again, it was probably a woman, so we’re better off as is.

Surf City Surf Dog raises money for a variety of animal rescues and organizations, as dog owners help their pooches compete in two types of canine surfing contests – GROMS and SHREDDERS. The GROMS competition featured dogs of all sizes competing in standard heats (Ed. – That’s when puppies are made!) and the SHREDDERS competition featured pooches vying for style, tricks and surf length. This event is much different from my annual competition, “Which cat will drown the fastest?”
