Jay Pharoah Did Stephen A. Smith Again, So Watch It Immediately

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.18.13

There are two things you should click without reading on With Leather: posts about Kate Upton, and instances of Jay Pharoah doing his Stephen A. Smith impression on Saturday Night Live. In a better world, real-life Stephen A. Smith would retire and let Pharoah ghost him. (via NBC.com)

Stephen A. Smith Gets Jokes, You Guys

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.18.12

"Knock knock... OPINION!"

For some reason, Deadspin has targeted Stephen A. Smith for a new series of unverified stories from readers about the ESPN First Take shouter guy’s behavior in restaurants. The latest came this morning in a blurb about SAS being a bad tipper, and the theme originated the other day with a story about SAS shouting at a waiter about a bottle of ketchup. In all, it’s not the most exciting stuff, because it’s low-hanging fruit, but it’s still damn funny to watch Skip Bayless’ best friend get worked up.

If you take a look at Smith’s Twitter feed, you’ll notice that he was indeed a little worked up by the original Deadspin story, as he fired off a few Tweets about it. And then he was fired up about the horrific officiating in last night’s Monday Night Football game, as most of us were. But what’s missing in between those two cases of 140-character rage is a rant that he typed out yesterday after a serious news site posted a malicious and completely false story about him.

What followed was rather remarkable.

NBA Draft Rumors: Another Reason Why Twitter Is Destroying The World

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.27.12

Last week, I was giddy like a school girl when I saw that Jack McBrayer, AKA Kenneth from my favorite show, “30 Rock”, was following me on Twitter, because as someone who watches roughly 4-6 episodes of “30 Rock” each day, that would be pretty cool. Of course it was a fake account, with someone just pretending to be McBrayer, which led a few of us to wonder, “Who the f*ck pretends to be Jack McBrayer?” And the moral of this edition of #CoolStoryBro is that people on Twitter are f*cking weird.

Case in point, yesterday there were two huge “rumors” that blew up on Twitter regarding NBA Draft news. The first came yesterday afternoon via a Tweet:

Upon first glance, you’re probably thinking, “Holy crap, are the Celtics out of their f*cking minds?” And a lot of people thought that, because it was retweeted more than 1,100 times. But if you’re more adept and you actually read stuff before reacting, you’ll notice that A) Chris Broussard’s name is misspelled, and 2) the real Broussard has almost 500,000 followers. You’d think it would be pretty obvious.

But it wasn’t, as the rumor spread so far, so fast that it actually became a news story in Boston. People were ready to rip Danny Ainge’s body to pieces and send them to the corners of Massacusetts as a warning.

To quote the legendary rap group Onyx, B-B-B-BUT WAIT IT GETS WORSE!

Stephen A. Smith Just Realized What’s So Hilarious About Stephen A. Smith

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.22.12

Yesterday, we shared with you comedian Jay Pharoah’s epic, pitch-perfect takedown of Stephen A. Smith during Saturday night’s Weekend Update segment on SNL. It was the kind of thing they need to do more of, in both “do good impressions of people who aren’t on CNN” and “let Jay Pharoah be on your show” interpretations of a thing.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! SportsCenter made the moment even better by filming Actual Stephen A. Smith’s reaction to the impression as he watched it, and it’s the perfect mixture of SAS brush-off and facepalming to let you know he’s a good sport, but he’s also going to sit somewhere by himself a little later and contemplate how life has brought him here.

The wonderful video is below.

ESPN Could Learn From Saturday Night Live

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.21.12

Every Monday, NBC takes out the weekend’s trash in the form of Saturday Night Live’s Web “Exclusive” clips, which is the show’s nice way of saying, “This sucked so we cut it from the actual show.” Today, the Twitters are going nuts over a cut clip from Weekend Update that features Jay Pharoah as Stephen A. Smith discussing the Miami Heat in the NBA Playoffs. If you’re not familiar with Pharoah, he’s the hilarious impressionist who is rarely used because, “Hey, a 107th Gilly sketch is just easier, bro.”

Pharoah’s previously aired impressions include Will Smith, Jay Z and Morgan Freeman, and they’re all hilariously spot on. Not surprisingly, his Screamin’ A is pretty much perfect as well, from the slowly-building payoff shouting to the shameless name-dropping. But the one little problem with it all is that SNL’s typical studio audience apparently doesn’t know who Smith is. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure they’d be dying over this bit.

It’s a shame, but maybe we can read all about it in Pharaoh’s eventual book, “Here’s My Impression of Me Leaving SNL After Three Seasons.”
