Sports On TV: The Wonder Years’ 15 Greatest Sports Moments

There’s only one way to start a column about ‘The Wonder Years.’

Whether you lived in the 1960s or just the 1980s, ABC’s 1988-1993 hit ‘The Wonder Years’ remains one of the best TV shows ever made. It follows the not-especially-remarkable life of Kevin Arnold, an average kid growing up in the suburbs in the late 60s, his family, his friends and the girl of his dreams. If you haven’t watched the show, I recommend you running to Netflix Instant and marathoning the entire thing, being careful to avoid that low rent version of ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’ they use in the open so they don’t have to pay The Beatles and/or Joe Cocker a ton of money.

We’ve put together the 15 best sports moments from the run of the show, featuring everything from dodgeball to Jesus Christ playing high school basketball to Kevin’s sweet vintage Jets jacket. Click through to check them out.

Sports On TV: The Munsters’ 10 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.30.13

Because they’re monsters. Get it.

This week, Sports On TV looks at the 10 greatest sports moments from the hit 1964 sitcom ‘The Munsters,’ about a family of Universal Monsters who live in a creepy old mansion and try (and mostly fail) to interact with the normal people in their community. Sure, it’s the Go-Bots to ‘The Addams Family’s’ Transformers, but it was a fun show and a great example of 1960s sitcom joy, and come on, I know at least one of your parents loved this and made you watch it. Hopefully the same parent who made you watch ‘The Brady Bunch.’

If you’ve never seen the show, check out the list anyway, because it is all about a Frankenstein making life difficult for strangers. The list features appearances from Hall of Fame baseball players, legendary MMA instructors and a drag racing coffin that Rob Zombie made famous to a new generation. So yeah, click through to enjoy the 10 greatest sports moments from ‘The Munsters.’ And don’t forget to unlock our commenting badge while you’re at it.

Sports On TV: Family Matters’ 20 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.09.13

Urkel American Gladiators

did I do that

This week, With Leather’s semi-weekly look at the best sports moments from not-sports television shows goes back to its 80s roots to chronicle the jet pack rope climbs, Bushwhacker tag team matches and Grandmama slam dunks of ABC’s TGIF founding father ‘Family Matters.’ You may remember it best as “that show Urkel was on.” Consider it a spiritual sequel to our Full House list.

If you watched the show, you’ll remember these moments. If you didn’t, you should find enough insurmountable 80s/90s cheese in Reginald VelJohnson ALONE to satiate you. So sit back, relax, and repeatedly click the “next” button for the 20 greatest sports moments of ‘Family Matters.’ No sweat, my pet!

Sports On TV: Archer’s 15 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.02.13

Lana. LANA!

Sports On TV is in the Danger Zone.

Our look at the best sports moments from shows that aren’t necessarily about sports takes on FX’s ‘Archer’ this week, and if there’s a show the kids at UPROXX love more than ‘Archer,’ I’d like to see it. Inside, you’ll find one of the most clever, obscure, expertly-written shows on television. You’ll also find lacrosse jokes about rock bands from the 1990s, a guy trying to play baseball in space, Ultimate Bum Shock Fights (which are exactly what they sound like), Siamese fighting fish, and more.

So please click through and-or enjoy Sports On TV: ‘Archer’s’ 15 greatest sports moments.

Sports On TV: 15 More Great Sports Moments From Saved By The Bell

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.25.13

Saved by the Bell golfing

The very first show featured in our Sports On TV column was ‘Saved By The Bell,’ and with good reason. It’s one of those shows we’ve all seen whether we like it or not, and face it, you can’t spell “Internet” without ‘Saved By The Bell.’

Saved By The Bell’s 20 Greatest Sports Moments featured so many of the classics — Zack becoming an Indian to deal with track team stress, girls on the wrestling team, wheelchair basketball, Zack hitting a soon-to-be-dead-from-oil-spillage duck with a baseball — but it didn’t feature them all. It’s only fitting that the first part 2 entrant in Sports on TV history would be 15 MORE great sports moments from the show.

So, please click through to enjoy sports moments 21-35 from ‘Saved By The Bell.’ Warning: there is a lot of spooning-disguised-as-instruction gags in these entries. A LOT.
