A 30 Person Backflip On Skis, Or ‘The Human Centipede Of Winter Sports’

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.30.13

30 person backflip Update: Canada has surpassed the United States in the aerospace industry. Thanks a lot, Obama!

Dozens of skiers in Quebec, Canada, take part in a world record attempt, performing a 30 person mass backflip on skis. The participants hold hands as they jump and all land neatly. This is their second attempt at the jump at Mont Saint-Sauveur in the Laurentian mountains.

There’s so much to love about this clip. How low the skiers have to go to pull off a 30 person backflip, how they kinda look like somebody’s stitches when they’re in the air, the wonderfully-Canadian responses from the crowd (“whoa ho!”) and my favorite, the SNOWMAN MOUNTAIN. We should turn every snowy hill into a snowman. This should not be optional.

Get your shit together, America. We should be prepping for the 31-man backflip launch right now. Don’t let the onset of summer keep us from being the best in the world at everything. Well, everything useless.

Here’s An 11-Year Old’s Ski Jump Fail, Because We’re Awful People

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.26.13

Child Ski Jump Fail

Oddly enough, on a site that heavily features objectified boobs galleries and asinine retrospectives of children’s cartoons, one of the most popular things we’ve shared over the last few months was the epic ski jump fail of Japanese layabout Daiki Ito. If you haven’t watched it, watch it. It’s even better than you’re imagining.

Ito’s flop was legendary, but he had to start somewhere. Enter this 11-year-old kid on his first run at a ski jump in California’s Kirkwood Mountain Resort. He takes off and things look pretty good, but then … no.

The picture kinda spoils the final half of his downhill adventure, but the video is below.

Thanks For The Viral Video, Mom

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.13.13

Ski MomWait for it … wait for it …

This clip of Yuri Danilochkin eating it on his way down the slope at Austria’s FIS World Cup championships is fun in that “watching people mildly hurt themselves” way, but it’s nothing spectacular. What’s spectacular is the ending, when the camera crew shares the reaction of Yuri’s trainer, aka Yuri’s mom. It’s the kind of reaction reserved for those times when a dead Japanese girl is crawling out of your television.

Deadspin was nice enough to share this clip (because I’m a little behind in my DVR with all these Austrian ski competitions going on), and they were also nice enough to share the response from Canadian skiier Manuel Paradis, who pretty much says it all:

So Much For Elin: Tiger Woods Is Apparently Dating Olympic Skier Lindsey Vonn

Written by Ashley Burns / 01.28.13

"Oh well, guess I'm just stuck with my $110 million."

Two weeks ago, there was a juicy HOTT GOSS rumor floating around that Tiger Woods was offering his ex-wife Elin Nordegren $200 million to remarry him, and he was backing that up with an additional $350 million prenuptial agreement. Of this rumor, which came from the dismissive-wank-worthy National Enquirer, I wrote that it made no sense, because:

  1. Nordegren already took $110 million from Woods in their divorce, so why would she trade the remaining shreds of her dignity for $200 million and endless public scorn?
  2. Woods could save his $550 million package and still sleep with pretty much any girl on this planet.

It turns out that option 2 was correct, because the man who is probably going to win his seventh Farmers Insurance Open title today has apparently been dating Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn since November.

Holy Sh*t: The Worst Ski Jump Attempt Ever

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.21.13

Daiki Ito Ski Jump failThe adorable banner at the beginning of this video reads FLY UP HIGHER OUR JUMPERS. Little did they know they’d be witnessing a Daiki Ito fly lower than any man in history.

The YouTube description doesn’t do it justice:

The japanese ski jumper Daiki Ito slips on the jump from the beam and head down the ramp track. Fortunately, he is stopped just before takeoff.

Firstly, it doesn’t look like he slipped at all; it looks like he’s never been on a pair of skis before and is trying out the “pizza, french fries” gag from ‘South Park’. Secondly, there’s no “fortunately” about him being stopped before takeoff. Ito earned every second of the hilarity that would’ve come from watching him ass-slide off a ski jump ramp, and the guy who stopped him should be barred from these types of events for life.

Next time you “slip,” just fold your arms over your chest and pretend you’re on a waterslide.

Skiing + Ride Of The Valkyries = The Most Epic Downhill Ride Ever

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.14.13

I can’t explain why this video exists, but if I had to, I’d say YOLO.

YouTube user Explosean is just like any other band geek on the Internet … he uploads instructional trombone videos, thinks putting a GoPro on the slide is hilarious and knows what “progressive jazz” means. He’s also not afraid to take it to the next level and go FULL INTERNET BOSS by performing Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ while skiing down the side of a mountain.

That video is just part one. Part two, included after the jump, follows Explosean a little farther down the mountain and sees him blow past other, unsuspecting skiers en route to destiny.
