This Is Why We Need More Mike Tyson

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.29.11

If you’re trying to pinpoint the exact moment that Mike Tyson went from raging psychopath meltdown monster to the current hilarious and generally affable guy that we all love, most people would probably say it was his cameo in The Hangover. But I think it goes back a little further to one of his first appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, when he sang “Monster Mash” with Bobby Brown. The Hangover probably made us all realize that he was finally laughing with us, but if it didn’t, then his 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey at least made him a human to us again.

And that’s why his latest antics have been so fantastic and hilarious, even though we know he’s still batsh*t insane. Whether dancing with Wayne Brady to “Every Little Step I Take” or delivering the worst-yet-funniest Herman Cain impression or simply telling us how hard Sarah Palin should be, um, romanced, Mike Tyson should be more involved in every aspect of our lives. Thank God he’s back with an appearance on the Brazilian TV show, “Huck’s Cauldron,” this past weekend, as he sang “The Girl from Ipanema” with host Luciano Huck.

If this doesn’t make you smile, then you might just be the real monster.

There’s No Easy Way Out: Rocky to Become a Musical

Written by Brandon Stroud / 06.02.11

Rocky: the Musical

My prediction: pain.

Tony winner Thomas Meehan went through his DVD collection the other day, looking for a new musical. “Annie? No. Young Frankenstein? Maybe. Wait, no, we already did that. The Producers? SH*T.” Then, he got to Rocky. Rocky is about a brain damaged debt collector who falls in love and finds out he’s great at championship boxing because a combination of ignorance and pride keep him from falling down. So of course that sounds like the perfect musical!

“It was made to be a musical,” Meehan said. It’s got all the elements.”

“Sylvester Stallone won’t be in it, but he’s given us his blessing,” Meehan said. “He and I sat and worked it out together. It’s really, on some level, autobiographical. He was an actor nobody cared about. The whole thing is an analogy of his own life.”

You know what I always thought would make “Gonna Fly Now” more inspirational? A crowd of people fake smiling and making jazz hands at the celing. I saw Mary Poppins at the Kennedy Center and I thought that was a pretty great adaptation, so I’m guessing punching frozen meats and giving robot sidekicks to your girlfriend’s wacky brother to show how rich you’ve gotten will make equally great topics for songs. The musical will be based on the first Rocky (known as “Rocky 1″), and sadly not Rocky III, which has all the semi-nude beach running and dialogue about “colored fighters” we’ve come to expect from Broadway.

Hopefully this song will be included in the production:

Cam Newton Was Like Baby, Baby, Baby

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.23.11

Justin Bieber wins the HeismanCam Newton of the Carolina Panthers has it all. He won a Heisman Trophy, he was drafted first overall, and now he’s all over the Internet singing Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” Of course, to hear “Baby” is to sing it facetiously. There’s nothing more fun than doing the monotone, Rebecca Black-esque “bay-beh, bay-beh bay-beh” part and then going OOOHHHHH like somebody stabbed you center-ass with a fire iron. Try it, the more dramatic the “ooh,” the funnier the “bay-behs.”

If you stick around through the Bieber, you get to see Cam freestyle, which is somehow even more embarrassing and less masculine than singing “Baby.”

Shaq Is A Weird, Weird Dude

Written by Bacon / 04.13.10

There are things Shaquille O’Neal does well. Dunk, tweet, dominate with his size, find rather tiny wives.

There are things Shaq doesn’t do so well. Make movies, star in movies, act in movies and shoot free throws. (He would presumably not shoot free throws well in movies, but I’m fairly certain that was never a scene in “Blue Chips.”)

None of this is stopping the Big, umm, Queen Latifah from making a couple of random appearances in videos. Last month he had an extremely random cameo in an Owl City video (yes, the Owl City that sang “Fireflies,” the song that makes your ears hate noise).

Now, he is posting a video lip syncing Aaliyah’s “At Your Best” while not wearing a shirt and, for some reason, pouring water randomly on his head. This video is a little too “D’angelo ‘How Does It Feel’” for my liking, but I guess the only explanation is Shaq needed to fill a committee to Smart Water and this was his best idea.

The things you do when you’re not playing basketball.
