NATION OF ISLAM SPORTSBLOG IS AMAZING

Written by Matt / 08.13.07

Listen, I try to keep my attention on shit that matters, like sports and naked chicks and videos of people getting hit in the face.  Blogging about people who write about sports is for dipshits who should spend less time consuming sports and more time masturbating to the video game version of Lara Croft.

That said — and I know that this hardly counts as a real post — I don't know what else to do but ask that you read Nation of Islam Sportsblog's interview with Scoop Jackson.  Wear a helmet.  The irony is enough to crush your skull.

And now, I guess I should get back to this.

NOVEMBER 7TH IS ANNIVERSARY DAY

Written by Matt / 11.07.06

Everybody's talking about the anniversary of something today.

Over on FOXsports.com, Elliott Kalb looks back on Magic Johnson's retirement, which was announced 15 years ago today after the luminous basketball star learned he had HIV. Back then we were all pretty sure he was gonna die pretty quickly, but he's hanging on pretty nicely. Still, at the time, it was a shocking public recognition that anyone could contract the virus, not just New York City queers and unfortunate blood transfusion recipients.

Even more depressing, ESPN.com's Page 2 is celebrating birthday #6 today. You can access the work of the sadly deceased Ralph Wiley and Hunter S. Thompson, as well as the sadly alive Scoop Jackson, whose featured Scoop Manifesto (AKA the "What I Believe" column) truly set a precedent for historic shittiness in written communication. Oh, and they've opened up the precious Sports Guy vault, if you're into that sort of thing.

But there is one bright spot today: it's the one-year anniversary of the Carolina TopCats' drunken lesbian bathroom stall sex, complete with a segue into foxy boxing. Angela and Renee, I salute you. And I don't think I need to spell out what I mean by "salute."

Checking in with Scoop Jackson

Written by Matt / 10.17.06

Jason Whitlock memorably called Scoop Jackson "a clown" whose "fake ghetto posturing" was a "bad Nat X impersonation", and Scoop apparently has had a chance to respond. For the sake of everyone's intellect, I wouldn't dare link to anything Scoop himself has written, but you should check out True Hoop's measured analysis and Scoopwatch's scathing but fair breakdown.

I have, on occasion, tried to read Scoop Jackson. It generally defies what I thought were the limits of awfulness in journalism and commentary. I'm pretty sure I made more cogent written arguments in fifth grade. (Though to be fair to Scoop, I was awfully precocious.) Courtesy the True Hoop post, part of Scoop's explanation of his style:

Remember when Chuck D said (Rebel without a Pause) "A supporter of Chesimard?" (Assata Shakur–activist in Black Panther Party currently living in asylum in Cuba) I guarantee you that nine out of ten people never knew who Chesimard was. Chuck D remained unapologetic in his lyrics. He never explained who she was. He wanted the listener to do the research.

Dude, I don't have a problem with your references to black culture. It's your fractured syntax and general sports cluelessness that bothers me. And please never, ever compare yourself to Chuck D. That's like me saying I've adopted Thom Yorke's approach to art, when in fact I'm the K-Fed of blogging. PopoZao, bitches.
