The National League worked really hard to get our attention yesterday, as the Rockies thrashed the Giants 20-8. Yes, that's more than three times as many runs as there were points in the Steelers-Jags game. The Rockies scored in every inning but the seventh. Oh, look at this: all these runs were scored at Coors Field. Shockeroo.
But the game that was really out of control was the Dodgers' 11-10 victory over the Padres. In a game between the two teams battling for the NL West crown, the Padres jumped to an early 4-0 lead, then the Dodgers tied it in the 3rd inning, and it stayed knotted until the 8th, when the Padres added two more runs. Then the Dodgers made it 6-5 in the bottom of the inning. Then the Padres scored three in the top of the 9th for a commanding 9-5 lead. Then the Dodgers hit four consecutive homers to send it to extra innings. The Padres took a one-run lead in the 10th, which — of course — was erased by Nomar Garciaparra's two-run walk-off home run.
Goddam. The only way that game could have been more exciting is if there had been land mines and tigers on the field. And maybe a Slip N Slide from third base to home.
Of course, I slept through these desperate attempts to get my attention. It's like that time my girlfriend took all those pills. Cry for help my ass. If you want a ride to the hospital, don't overdose on a Sunday during football season.
