OTTAWA FANS ARE GRACIOUS LOSERS

Written by Matt / 05.17.07

As you certainly know from With Leather's extensive, non-stop NHL coverage, the Senators missed their chance to sweep the Sabres in the Eastern Conference finals last night, falling 3-2 on their Canadian home ice.  And a couple Senators fans didn't exactly handle the loss well.

Sean Luck said his wife, Renee Luck, who was wearing Buffalo Sabres colours and logos, was walking in front of him through the corridors of Scotiabank Place as they tried to leave the stadium with about six other Sabres fans.  "Two guys… as they were walking out, punched my wife four times — in the head," Luck said. "They just seemed like they were pissed off because the Senators lost."  Luck said his wife has two large bumps on her forehead, one on her cheek and a cut on her cheek from the assault.

Man, if I had a nickel every time I assaulted a woman wearing opponents' colors when my team lost… wait, did I say "nickel"?  I meant "30 to 90 days in jail."  But totally worth it.  Great stress reliever.

Disclaimers: The Senators fans shown here are not the suspects in question; also, 289 is a Sabres fan, which explains a little.

IT’S FUNNY WHEN KIDS’ DREAMS GET SMASHED

Written by Matt / 05.15.07

This video goes out to the suffering people of Buffalo, who really haven't caught many breaks over the years.  All those Super Bowls.  Close proximity to Canadia.

And now the Sabres, who — as I understand it — were looking super-awesome all season but are now staring down the barrel of a 3-0 deficit to the Senators of Ottawa in the Eastern Conference championship.  Well, with the faith of this kid and the craziness of playoff hockey, maybe the Sabes can pull it out.  I'll be rooting for you, Buffalo.  In a not-really-thinking- about-it, passive kind of way.

INFORMATIVE UPDATE:  The dad is chanting "Emery," as in the Sens' Ray Emery.

With a sharp salute to my friends at the FanHaus

HOCKEY FIGHTS ARE BRUTAL

Written by Matt / 05.09.07

How this happened a month ago without me seeing it is totally beyond my understanding.  Oh wait, I know why: it's hockey.  Did this happen in the playoffs?  Are either of the teams still in contention for the Stanley Cup?  It's a mystery only NHL fans know, and I don't know where I can find one.

In other times and places, men like these players for Ottawa and Montreal were called vikings, knights, or crusaders, and their acts of reckless heroism were re-told through the ages by wandering troubadours.  Today, we call them by a centuries-old name: warriors.  Wait, that's not right.  I meant to say, "total pussies."  I believe they each got five minutes in the penalty box for cowardice.

(Thanks to Show Dog With Papers, even though a bunch of you hockey people have already seen it)

UPDATE: So I guess this is from a year ago?  Whatever.  Live it up, hockey fans… at least you got a post.

HOCKEY RULED LAST NIGHT

Written by Matt / 02.23.07

See, hockey, this is what I'm talking about. Last night's NHL action included a league-record eight (!) games going into overtime, which is enough for even me to sit up and take notice.

The biggest of those eight games was Buffalo's 6-5 barnburner win over Ottawa. Both teams surrendered two-goal leads before the deciding shootout, but more importantly, there was an all-out melee early in the second period after Sabres captain Chris Drury took a vicious blindside hit. That's right, all 12 players on the ice dropped their gloves, including the goalies. Ottawa's Ray Emery liked it so much, he took on Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters after knocking down his outmatched fellow goaltender.
