IN OTHER SPORTS RELATIONSHIP NEWS…

Written by JOSH Z / 12.02.09

American Scottish tennis “star” Andy Murray recently broke up with his girlfriend of almost four years over video games. Sources close to the ex, the relatively un-notable Kim Sears, said that Murray was too busy playing video games to appreciate her.

Brad Gilbert, Murray’s former coach, has said in the past that Murray spends “seven hours a day” playing video games.

“[He] would spend all his time glued to them. In the end she just got fed up with it. She wanted more out of the relationship.”

However, the player’s agent [said] that Murray “doesn’t play computer games any more than any other 22 year-old”. –Telegraph, as seen on First Cuts.

Is now a bad time to sing the praises of the forgotten Playstation 2? The games are still good, but cheaper now. And if you don’t own an HDTV, they look and play just as well. Of course, my mother would give me the same speech before every dinner of hamburgers on white bread. Getting older can be so depressing sometimes. I’ll feel better after I beat up some hookers in a quick game of “Grand Theft Auto.” And by quick, I mean like “the rest of the day.” Not really. Maybe.

ADENHART’S JERSEY GOT TOTALLY WASTED, MAN

Written by JOSH Z / 09.30.09

MORE MLB: The Cleveland Indians are getting rid of manager Eric Wedge. I guess you can’t fire the infantry…

There apparently has been some clamoring about how the Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim United States North America Earth incorporated the jersey of their late pitcher Nick Adenhart into their champagne-soaked celebration of their AL West title. The jersey of Adenhart, who was killed in a hit-and-run by a driver under the influence earlier in the season, was soaked in champagne and alcohol during the celebration, which angered a lot of people hoping to see laundry treated more humanely. The Angels defended themselves yesterday.

“We wanted to celebrate with him like he was here,” reliever Kevin Jepsen, whose locker is just a few stalls away from Adenhart’s, said Tuesday. “If he was still here with us, we’d be pouring beer on him just like everybody else in here.[..]

Said third baseman Chone Figgins: “He’s our teammate. We’re allowed to do what we want.”

Manager Mike Scioscia said the gesture was meant as nothing more than homage to the 22-year-old…”You have to understand these players and the tribute, what it really means when you pour champagne on somebody,” Scioscia said. “That’s the tribute, not the fact that it was alcohol. It’s like getting a whipped-cream pie in the face after an interview. It’s part of the tribute. . . . I think it was very sincere, very real and I know it was meaningful to us.” via.

The dearth of convictions of “Driving While Pie-Faced” notwithstanding, I’ve never found it appropriate to judge other people’s reactions on how they handle death. Some people want to cry, some people get angry. Others just want to climb back on while the body’s still warm and “pay their final respects.” Pay them all over her chest and face. But that’s why America loves baseball. We still love baseball, right?

MYLES BRAND, NCAA CHIEF, DIES

Written by JOSH Z / 09.16.09

Myles Brand, the NCAA president who made headlines in 2000 for firing Bobby Knight while president of Indiana University, succumbed to pancreatic cancer today. He was 67.

Brand shepherded into the common parlance of the NCAA a system of academic accountability for teams called the Academic Progress Rate. He backed his belief in sports as an agent of broader social change by advocating for an NCAA policy against Native American mascots.

Yet his pragmatic nature allowed for exceptions and compromise in both cases. As he often reminded people, the NCAA president has a bully pulpit, not the power of a czar.via.

So the real Myles Brand legacy will be that of a guy that fired Bobby Knight and killed Chief Illiniwek, since tracking academics in Division I sports is almost pointless. And that damn Y instead of an I in his first name. But yeah, sad.
