New Logo Idea: Alligator Holding Bat

new Miami Marlins logo

What you’re looking at may or may not be the new Miami Marlins logo.

“Official unveiling 11/11 (Nov. 11),” texted Marlins president David Samson. “No other comment.”

It could be completely fake, which makes us think it is 100% real. If you’re looking for an other comment, here are a few — my friend Mike says it looks like the old Prism TV logo. David Brown of Big League Stew thinks it looks like an upside-down version of the W Hotels W. I think it looks like something I’d drive or drive over in F-Zero.

So many questions. What happened to the marlin? It used to look like a fish, now it’s just a vaguely Marlin-shaped swoosh. Where’s the teal? You’re getting rid of the teal? Your team came from the 1990s, Florida, don’t try to make me forget that. Are the Rockies going to debut their red, white and blue uniforms next year? What’s going to happen to Billy Marlin? The man’s head is teal. Are you going to replace him with colors? If I have my birthday party at New Marlins Ballpark will I have to pay $150 to get my picture taken with colors?

This could be a soft launch, like when Green Lantern tried to promote itself by accidentally showing us Blake Lively’s boobs, or it could be a complete fabrication. The color scheme matches the logo they have on Marlins.com for the new ballpark, but I could go on Worth1000 and post a picture of the Insane Clown Posse riding a leaping tiger, and if I show it to enough people it’ll pop up on HuffPo tomorrow morning as Detroit’s “new, rumored logo”. So who knows?

Is This The New Wizards Logo?

Written by JOSH Z / 03.07.11

It’s no news that the Washington Wizards have been in the process of reverting back to their franchise’s classic red, white, and blue color scheme, because I guess that’s what you do when you play in the nation’s capital. But now one image of a piece of NBA apparel seems to have unintentionally leaked what might be the new Wizards logo. Of course, this is just the old logo with the blue and gold swapped out for blue and red.

So is it the actual new logo? Wizards owner Ted Leonsis is keeping mum.

We won’t get into confirming or denying the validity of any logo designs. We appreciate and understand the excitement surrounding the new color scheme, and we are planning a comprehensive brand launch.

I doubt that’s it, because it looks like total ass, and the one thing the NBA usually gets right is its branding. After all, they changed the team’s name from the Bullets because so many people in DC were getting murdered. Sometimes you can be too right.

Is This The Future Of The Nets?

Written by Ashley Burns / 12.14.10

Back in September, a pair of Philadelphia lawyers registered the name “Brooklyn New Yorkers” for trademark protection, as well as a series of logos and the slogan “We Come To Play”, according to the fine people at Nets Daily. This news has the NBA world buzzing because this could be the new name and logo for the New Jersey Nets once they move to Brooklyn. It’s certainly an exciting and inspiring rumor for people who own stencil kits and rhinestone guns.

Of course, only those Philly lawyers and the Nets ownership know if this is actually the new name and logo. And maybe Kim Kardashian, because she makes Kris Humphries tell mama all the big news if he wants to keep getting the sugar. Presumably. I swear I don’t think about them having sex. Stop talking, Burnsy.

Airbrush my tall tee, Nets Daily

There’s no indication in the US Patent and Trademark Office files that the Nets are associated with the lawyers. A spokesperson for the team declined comment Monday when asked by NetsDaily about the trademark applications. A spokesperson for Mikhail Prohorov’s [sic] Onexim Group told NetsDaily recently that the applications are “not ours”. The attorney of record on three of the five applications has not responded to a request for information.

The NBA – where mystery, intrigue and uninspired logos happen. While I’m certainly no trademark and patent lawyer (I’m just an honest neurosurgeon by day and exotic male dancer by night) I think it’s a bit premature to assume this concept would be the step forward that the Nets are looking to take. Then again, maybe Prokhorov is a stereotypical Russian and he is pushing the name because he thinks it’s American. Their mascot could be Billy Joel and the uniforms will be denim. But seriously, that logo looks like it’s from Double Dribble.

Some more evidence for your conspiracy theories after the jump…
