Did Jay Cutler Have The Worst Rendition Of ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ Of All-Time?

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.16.12

"Buy me some Smirnoff Ice and Armani slacks, I don't care if I *mumble mumble*, bro."

Forgive me for that headline, as hyperbole usually isn’t in my wheelhouse, but holy Harry Caray, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler did a number on the classic Wrigley Field 7th inning stretch on Saturday. Our beloved J-Cutty was on hand at the Friendly Confines to throw out the first pitch and sing “Take me Out to the Ballgame” and it was just plain bad.

Cutler also spent the bottom half of the 7th inning in the booth with Bob Brenly and Len Kasper, and the entire package was just one epic disaster of awkwardness. Ultimately, it’s what I expected from the socially reluctant Cutler, who never seems like he wants to be anywhere. Hell, I thought the cherry on top was when he returned to his seat without the Cubs jersey that he was visibly struggling to button up as he entered the booth.

But hey, not everyone has to be a Cubs fan to appreciate tradition. However, would it be too much of me to ask these celebrities and Cubs fans to simply learn the lyrics to a short song that people have been singing for more than 100 years? I don’t think so. And to answer my own question, no. Cutler wasn’t the worst. Perhaps he was the most uninspired or uninterested, but there have been many far worse. And I have them to punish us all.

Dancing With The Ditka…And A Clipboard

Written by JOSH Z / 03.15.11

This has already been posted over at KSK, but it’s too surreal to not include here. It’s former NFL coach and current ESPN analyst Mike Ditka. Dancing. Oh yes.

The 80s-style weirdness is ratcheted up nicely, starting with Ditka walking into an empty bar WITH A BRIEFCASE and playing a game of foosball BY HIMSELF. Why foosball? Hey, it’s 11-on-11. That’s just like football! And then there’s a horrible band with Excessive High-Five Syndrome and a bunch of dancers without pants. Mons pubis? Let’s do this.

It’s weird. No wonder everyone did cocaine during the 80s. At least now we have World of Warcraft. Read the rest of this entry »

PAUL HORNUNG IS AWESOME

Written by Christmas Ape / 07.17.08

As was noted in the link dump, Paul Hornung is all for the NFL players of today spending more of their time getting laid. As this video from Deuce of Davenport shows, the rest of their time should go to laying out retired coaches, as the former Packer great does to Mike Ditka during a roast honoring Iron Mike. This after Ditka manages to topple over his own table getting up to go to the podium, so you can say he had it coming. You can also say Hornung should've kicked him while he was down. It's all in the spirit of the roast, y'know, some gentle ribbing, then some kicks to the ribs. Uh-oh, Ditka is laughing blood again.

LIVE TV IS GREAT

Written by Matt / 09.11.07

The broadcast team of Itchy & Scratchy and POOCHIE Mike and Mike and Mike did a great job last night. Monday Night Football: come for the fantasy impact, but stay for the old man sweaty ball-hustling.  Thanks, ESPN!

(…and thanks to reader/Nobel Laureate Brammer for the screencap.  And for the cold sweat of 7 hours of nightmares.)

Update: Just saw that Deadspin had this on the live-blog last night. That little slut Brammer must get around.
