LeBron Being Sued By His “Father”

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.08.10

pregnancy test

A Washington D.C. man has decided that he wants in on the LeBron James Free Agent Frenzy, and he’s getting his the old-fashioned way – by suing the superstar and his mom and claiming to be his biological father. Leicester Bryce Stovell claims that he met Gloria James in 1984 when she was 15 and he was 29 and they did the babymaking deal without protection or concern for the law, apparently. The claim is a bit of a stretch, however, as Stovell has never been LeBron’s teammate.

Stovell is seeking $4 million in damages – for fraud, defamation and misrepresentation, among others – and is accusing Gloria of creating whatever stories we’ve previously heard about who LeBron’s father is so that she could capitalize on the mystery of the subject. Because telling everyone she was 15 and getting down with 29-year olds to the tune of, “Hey look, I’m preggers” isn’t exactly a Hollywood tale. Unless you’re getting Angelina Jolie to star.

Who’s that hiding in my bushes, TMZ:

One More Day Of This Nonsense

TV

ESPN analyst Chris Broussard reported yesterday that he learned through “independent sources” that people associated with LeBron James contacted ESPN about airing a one-hour TV special tomorrow night to showcase the free agent’s impending decision. In case you’re keeping score, ESPN.com published an article about one of its reporters using “sources” to scoop company programming news. *face palm* James’ people suggested to the Worldwide Leader that they can sell sponsorships to advertisers and donate all proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club, and at approximately 9:55 p.m. ET the man who calls himself King will announce which team he will sign with.

LeBron, Jay-Z Scoff At Your NBA Laws

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.01.10

friends

The New York Daily News reported on Monday that LeBron James, the King Ding-a-Ling in the NBA free agent class, was in New York last Friday to enjoy a night on the town. Keeping James company? New Jersey Nets minority owner, iconic rapper and friend Jay-Z. During any other month out of the year, this wouldn’t raise as much as an eyebrow, lest some TMZ photogs catch them in an Eiffel Tower with Miss USA. However, less than a week away from a day as important as today, it’s causing a bit of a storm, at least in Dallas.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined $100,000 in May for a harmless comment he made to CNNMoney.com about how any team would want to sign LeBron. Shortly after, former Suns President Steve Kerr was also fined $10,000 for a joke he made about signing James. These instances made public light of the NBA’s tampering rules, which basically impose a no contact policy between free-agents-to-be and team owners until the beginning of free agency – today. Queue the suspenseful beats.

LeBrunch Time: King James A Heat Bull?

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.28.10

LeBron Slot

With three days remaining until the beginning of the biggest, most super duperest NBA free agency period in the history of sports, it’s time for our favorite game – Everyone Has a Source! The rules of this game are simple: Run an article based on the pure conjecture of someone who might have something to do with the situation, or at least claims to; make sure all sources are anonymous to keep the aura of mystery and excitement; and, above all else, make sure your rumors and reports are completely contradicted by competitive news sources. Everybody ready to go?

First up, the New York Times is reporting that, according to an anonymous NBA executive, LeBron James and Chris Bosh are as good as signed with the Chicago Bulls, despite James’ open insistence of meeting with all interested teams at neutral locations once teams are actually allowed to speak with players on July 1. But those pesky other teams? Just wasting their time, says this oh-so-opulent NBA exec.

The Cavaliers Still Don’t Have A Coach

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.16.10

izzoAt a press conference last night, Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon proudly announced that men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo would be staying with the Spartans, thus putting an end to the latest prevalent saga in the LeBron James Chronicles. Izzo’s decision means that he has turned down Cleveland’s 5-year, $30 million offer and left the team with the best regular season record in the NBA without a coach as the free agency bonanza nears. Somewhere Mike Brown is giggling. Mainly because he’s watching Saved by the Bell in his PJs.

This marks the second time that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has attempted to land Izzo sans success, and now the attention is turning to former Nets coach Byron Scott, followed by a buffet of retreads and journeyman duds. Gilbert, an apparent graduate of the Glenn Frey Style Academy, says that he respects Izzo’s choice and admires his character, to which Izzo rolled over and kissed him on the cheek and whispered some sweet nothings.

Remain loyal to me, Detroit Free Press:

“Throughout the entire process, Dan Gilbert and the entire Cleveland organization has been nothing but class,” Izzo said in a statement. “His professionalism and caring nature for me, my family and Michigan State have been impressive. I wish him nothing but the best in his quest to win a world championship.”

“Just as I decided to stay home, I hope a 6-8, 270-pound forward in Cleveland decides to stay home,” Izzo added, referring to Cavs free-agent-to-be LeBron James.

Landing Byron Scott may not sound as easy as it seems, though, which is remarkable considering how easy it really sounds. Scott is rumored to be waiting out Phil Jackson’s decision on retirement, despite Jackson’s recent comments to Fanhouse about coaching in LA. However, if Jackson should retire and Scott assumes the Lakers’ coaching gig, then the Cavs would move on to such “prominent” names as Kelvin Sampson and Mike Woodson. Sampson, of course, was famously dismissed from Indiana University after the NCAA issued five major violations against the program, and Woodson was recently fired by Atlanta after the Hawks were swept out of the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

And if the Cavaliers are rifling through resumes like that… well, it’s only a matter of time:

New York Celebs Unite For LeBron

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.15.10

world

While no NBA team is allowed to court any of this year’s mega-super-duper-star free agents until July 1, famous fans of the New York Knicks have taken it upon themselves to unite and woo the alpha dog of the 2010 class, Dwayne Wade LeBron James. This is a clear counter to the efforts of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who offered Tom Izzo their head coaching job as a sign of dedication to winning, and the Chicago Bulls, who have found a way to be mentioned in each conversation about LeBron without having actually done anything.

Leading the charge for New York’s sports and celebrity elite is Donald Trump, who is sending a message out to LeBron that there is only one New York City. Famous Clevelander and actor Terrence Howard was also going to reach out to LeBron, but the city replaced him with Don Cheadle.

Roll out the burgundy carpet, Yahoo! Sports:

“We are in the process of assembling a committee of friends of the Knicks who are many of the city’s most successful winners and leaders [and] who have thrived in the world’s greatest city,” said a Knicks spokesman to the paper. “The enthusiastic response we have received from so many people wanting to help has been overwhelming and we look forward to working with this committee in various ways to show free agents that there is no better place to play and to win than in the world’s most famous arena and in New York City.”

The “committee” is expected to include Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Phil Simms, Mark Messier, John McEnroe, talk-show host Charlie Rose, “The Big Idea” host Donny Deutsch, and Whoopi Goldberg.

To be fair to Yahoo’s list of New York Q-listers, Chris Rock and Spike Lee have also spoken in favor of LeBron choosing the Big Apple as his new home, and even 30 Rock stars Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin have joined this makeshift coalition of support. Word is that Judah Friedlander was going to make one of his funny hats until someone pointed out that nobody cares about him.

Ironically, the last time any pop culture icon showed this much concern for the Knicks was when Joel Rifkin offered to take care of Shandon Anderson.
