Looks Like Denver Is Stuck With Kyle Orton

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.29.11

In what slowly developed into the most boring and worthless trade saga of this lockout-shortened NFL offseason, the Miami Dolphins finally told the Denver Broncos to F off in regard to Kyle Orton. Various outlets reported that the Dolphins wanted to send two late draft picks to Denver much like the Minnesota Vikings did for Donovan McNabb (two 6th rounders), but Denver wanted compensation along the lines of what the Arizona Cardinals gave for Kevin Kolb (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd rounder).

Gee, which option did the Dolphins choose for a guy whose offensive numbers came mostly from playing behind?

[Matt] Moore, who spent the previous three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, arrives in Miami today to sign a contract worth $5 million with incentives that could push it as high as $7.5 million.

The incentives are mostly playing-time based, which means Moore would have to unseat incumbent starter Chad Henne, who threw for 3,301 yards and 15 scores while leading the Dolphins to a 7-9 record. (Via Oregon Live and PFT)

This story is boring, I know, but I’m using it to point out that nothing has changed. The lockout may have resolved the Collective Bargaining Agreement issues and ensured the league’s future for the next decade, but it didn’t do anything to solve the stupidity. Arizona gave up a good defensive player and a 2nd rounder for a guy who is unproven, and then they paid him $22 million in guaranteed coin. That’s a brand new precedent set, and Denver bit on it. Of course, it bit Denver in the ass, too, but just wait until Philadelphia signs Vince Young and then trades him next year. All over again.

Michael Vick To Start (Killing Dogs Again) On Sunday

Written by JOSH Z / 09.22.10

MICHAEL_VICK_PUPPY_BOWL

That headline is meant in jest, but this is turning out to be a big deal. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has announced that the starting quarterback’s job is Michael Vick’s to lose, and now the debate of whether America is ready for a former dogfighter to lead an NFL team has been re-ignited.

Look, when Vick signed with the Eagles last year, we all knew we’d get to this point eventually. Vick is not the first convicted felon to come back to pro football. He won’t be the last. Vick has earned the job; it’s clear to most everyone that the Kevin Kolb era is still not ready for prime time. But while a lot of people have been supportive of Vick’s return to national prominence, some, more interestingly, have been critical of those who aren’t.

It’s important here to make a distinction between a man’s record and his reputation. As a citizen of this country, Vick is (and should be) free to pursue his livelihood. He has paid that debt.

But as a public figure, we’re not dutifully bound to forgive the guy. Or forget. He also has volunteered his time to speak on animal rights issues. Regardless of his motivations, that is a good thing. But I’m going to postpone revising my views on Michael Vick; I need more to go on than “Has done a good job of not torturing or murdering animals over the last four years.”

And I really don’t understand the mindset of people tripping over themselves to sh*t on anybody that still has a problem with him. Hey, I’d be even more bent out of shape if he had been banned from the league. That doesn’t mean I have to welcome the guy back onto my television with proverbial open arms. Or that I won’t do a double take when I see the next guy wearing a “VICK 7″ Eagles replica jersey walking down the sidewalk. That’s not playing God. That’s simply having an unfavorable opinion. We don’t have to see eye-to-eye, and you need to understand that.

There’s another post out there floating around about how great the Bad Newz dogs are doing. “You should get over Vick! The dogs did! You know, except for the dead ones.” I had no idea that Vick’s PR was being handled by the NCAA. If that’s good enough for you, fine. But don’t expect me to forget about what Vick did. I simply can’t. So stop asking.

Look For Michael Vick To Start On Sunday

Written by JOSH Z / 09.13.10

kevin kolb hurtWith Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb suffering from a concussion, the likelihood of Michael Vick making his first career start since 2006 has continued to grow. After Eagles head coach Andy Reid emphatically declared that Kolb will start in Week 2 in Detroit, the extent of Kolb’s injury became more clear.

The Eagles believe it will be a few days before they know if Kevin Kolb (concussion) will be cleared to play against the Lions on Sunday.

Coach Andy Reid has already said that Kolb will start if he’s healthy. But that hasn’t stopped fans and media from calling for Michael Vick to be under center regardless. If Vick ends up starting next week and performs well again, those calls will only get louder. –NBC Sports.

We mentioned earlier that Vick accounted for 278 yards of total offense after playing little more than the second half in the Eagles’ loss to Green Bay yesterday. Even if Kolb gets medical clearance to play by Friday [SPOILER ALERT: He won't be], it might be too late in the week for him to get up to speed. And if the Eagles have who has to be the best backup quarterback in the NFL right now, why rush to bring him back?
