BO KNOWS EXECUTING BEARS

11.29.07 Written by Matt

In case you haven't read it already, I highly recommend ESPN.com's E-ticket piece on Bo Jackson.  It examines Bo's life twenty years after his rise to prominence, covering everything from his Paul Bunyan-like mythology to the memorable marketing campaign to his simple life in suburban Chicago, where his extracurricular pleasures include bow-hunting and being intense.  The story leads off with what would sound like a tall tale if it were anyone besides Bo Jackson:

From behind the wheel of an obscenely muscled Dodge pickup, Vincent Edward "Bo" Jackson is reminiscing about the time he took down a 300-pound bear from point-blank range with a .45-caliber pistol… and if you're wondering whether Bo was scared, hell no, Bo was not scared. Not even when that bear got so close Bo and his hunting companion could see the hairs bolt upright like pine needles on the back of its neck…

The way Bo tells it, he waited as long as he could, then he fired a slug into that bear's skull. The bear kept coming. His buddy yelled, "Shoot him again!" and Bo shot him again, firing another bullet directly into the bear's noggin. Bo 2, Bear 0. And then Bo skinned that bear on the spot and dragged the 70-pound hide the half-mile back to camp. Of course he did.

Oh sure, it sounds impressive.  If you're a coward or a weakling.  Three hundred pounds isn't even that big for a bear.  Black bears weigh up to 600 pounds, while the more ferocious grizzly bear tops out at 1500 pounds.  That bear was smaller than Tony Siragusa.  And less deserving of a bullet in the skull.

SUPER BOWL XLII GOES THROUGH DETROIT

09.09.07 Written by Matt

The Chief will undoubtedly get you caught up on all the happenings in today's NFL action tomorrow morning, but I wanted to offer my 2 cents to say the Detroit Lions are clearly the best team in the NFL right now.  They took a commanding 17-point lead over the mighty Oakland Raiders (the team to beat in the AFC), only to fall behind 21-20.  Then, behind the leadership of superstar QB Jon Kitna, the Motown Maulers compiled 16 unanswered points to win by a final score of 36-21.  All I can say is wow.  Although, the Lions must maintain their winning ways because 2 of the other 3 teams in the NFC North won today, and the division is surely shaping up to be the toughest in the NFL.

Raiders' kicker Sebastian Janiikowski missed all 3 of his field goal attempts in the game.  He was a first round draft pick, wasn't he?  How many Polish guys does it take to kick a football over a crossbar? -KD

BUST BUSTED

08.29.07 Written by Matt

Todd Marinovich, the former Raiders quarterback who remains one of the biggest draft busts of all time, is now 38 years old.  And he rides a skateboard and does meth.

Police said Marinovich, 38, ran from officers who tried to stop him about 1:15 a.m. Sunday for skateboarding near the Newport Pier boardwalk, where skateboarding is prohibited.

He was found hiding in a carport about 1:30 a.m., police Sgt. Evan Sailor said. After searching Marinovich, police found about one gram of methamphetamine, a metal spoon and a hypodermic needle, Sailor said.

Fuckin' pigs, man.  How many stickers do I need to put on lamp posts before people realize SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME?  Having meth, well, yeah: that's a crime.  But it is a lot of fun.

NFL GAMES ARE FUN

08.07.07 Written by Matt

Every time I think European and South American soccer fans are more completely batshit crazy than NFL fans, a couple Raiders fans go to a game in San Diego… and completely redeem themselves

You'll notice that the final words of the video are one fan yelling, "It's not worth it!"  Au contraire, friend.  With the outcome of the game a near-certainty (hello, the Raiders are playing), one might as well kick the shit out of some opposing fans.  A rule of thumb I have about sporting events: criminal assault charges always make for a more memorable experience.

THE SILVER AND BLACK WILL, UH, ATTACK

I know these '80s team songs are bad for me, but I just can't stop.  They're like Pringles for me that way.  And by Pringles I mean crack.

Anyway, if you can handle six and half embarrassing minutes, here's the '86 Raiders.  It's got RadioShack commercial star Howie Long, Penthouse Pet harasser Marcus Allen, and incompetent boob Matt Millen.  Also featured: bonus mullet and inexplicable/awful guitar solo.  In other words, it's slightly more intelligent than FOX's NFL pre-game show.

DEFRAUDED PAWN BROKERS ARE LITIGIOUS

07.07.07 Written by Matt

Oakland Raiders defensive end Bryant McNeal likes to sell things he doesn't own:

McNeal, 27, was wanted in Florida for selling a Land Rover to a pawn broker for $15,000 when he didn't own it, said Clearwater, Fla., officer Wayne Shelor. When McNeal, who spent the 2005 training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, didn't return to claim the car, Carbucks Corp. tried to collect the title. However, the company found that McNeal had not paid off the bank loan, Shelor said. A warrant for McNeal's arrest was issued in December 2005 on a charge of defrauding a pawn broker, Shelor said.

It's illegal to defraud a pawn broker now?  I'm going to be in a lot of trouble if my local vulture discovers that Microvision® I sold him is not in actuality the new iPhone.  Of course, I can always blame it on Santa because he told me it was a Game Boy.  How could he not know the difference – he's in the toy business for Christ sake.  I swear that old bastard in the red pajamas is becoming senile.

McNeal was also served an arrest warrant from Richland County for writing a fraudulent $1,500 check to Berger Dental Group, the Lexington County sheriff's department said in a news release.

I wonder if Lane Kiffin is warming up his "Son, your mouth is writing checks your body can't cash!" for training camp.  Also, it's not a good idea to rook a dentist.  Didn't Bryant ever see Marathon Man? -KD
