A Man With No Arms Threw Out The First Pitch In Baltimore (Like A Boss)

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.10.13

Tom Willis no arms first pitch Baltimore

This week, With Leather has featured a lot of embarrassing attempts at the ceremonial first pitch. Tiffany Hwang of the K-Pop group Girls’ Generation adorably shanked her throw, and just this morning Burnsy wrote up the copycat who pulled the same fail in front of the Stetson Hatters. He forgot the cat ears, though.

Sometimes, believe it or not, the ceremonial first pitch can be GREAT. Want proof? Look no further than Tom Willis, a man who was born without arms who threw out of the first pitch at Thursday’s Orioles game. He may be the inspirational story you’re looking for. He may also be the neighbor on ‘The Jeffersons.’

Here’s the clip of his epic first pitch, which you should show to any Korean pop stars or Stetson fans you know, in an effort to shame them.

Drew Bonner Took An AB In A Wheelchair, Drew A Walk

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.23.13

Drew Bonner at bat

Yesterday, during a story about an 8-year old kid with cancer running in a touchdown for East Carolina University, we called for the worldwide spread of the “sports teams being nice to kids” meme. Today, two Virginia high schools have kept the allergies flowing.

Via YouTube:

Fairfax High School and Madison High School honored senior student Drew Bonner on April 22, 2013. Drew gets the ceremonial first at-bat.

Drew is in a wheelchair, but he hasn’t let that stop him from being a four-year varsity team manager, a braggart about his days skunking kids in Little League and a soon-to-be student at the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship. He also didn’t let the pitcher intimidate him in his ceremonial first-at-bat, as you can see in the clip below.

Baseball Comes Back To Fenway, David Ortiz Declares Boston “Our F**king City”

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.20.13

Without the stars, of course.

Today’s been an emotional one at Fenway Park. The Boston Bruins-style “everybody sings our national anthem in unison” moment has officially become a Boston staple. Pat-down lines were endless. Tears were non-stop. At the perfect moment, David Ortiz dropped the mother of all f-bombs, and baseball helped do what it always does: makes us feel better about the stupid shit in our lives that isn’t baseball.

Today In Awesome Wrestling News: PRIME Wrestling Made A Handicapped Fan’s Dream Come True

Written by Brandon Stroud / 12.31.12

Gregory Iron Zach Gowen Jill Dials Pro Wrestling Prime

In case you missed our story about WWE’s Daniel Bryan letting 7-year-old Connor ‘Stone Crusher’ Michalek tap him out to the No Lock, pro wrestling news can be happy and positive. Case in point: Ohio’s PRIME Wrestling, and the managerial expertise of Jill Dials.

One of PRIME’s top tag teams is the ‘Handicapped Handguns,’ Gregory Iron and Zach Gowen. Iron was cerebral palsy, and Gowen lost his left leg to cancer when he was 8-years old. You may remember Iron as the guy who got WWE Champion CM Punk’s endorsement and made it onto ESPN back in 2011. You may remember Gowen from his 2003-2004 run in WWE, where he wrestled Vince McMahon on pay-per-view and once defeated Brock Lesnar by disqualification. They are pro wrestlers living their dream, no matter what life came up with to stop them.

The Handguns recently had a match on PRIME Wrestling TV against The Sons Of Michigan (note: you can’t get any more heel in Ohio than being from Michigan) and did something very special — they helped a fan’s life in wrestling become, if only for a night, as charmed as theirs.

Greg & Zach’s most passionate supporter is likely Jill Dials. Born with spina bifida and confined to a wheelchair, Jill looks to Greg & Zach as sources of inspiration & hope and frequently proudly proclaims them to be her heroes. She also has a dream of her own… to be a wrestling manager/valet like another hero of hers… the legendary Miss Elizabeth.

Watch as Greg & Zach make Jill’s lifelong dream come true in a truly touching & emotional sentiment, then watch how their decision results in a dream come true for everyone involved in a recent match on PRIME Wrestling TV against The Sons of Michigan, “Amazing” N8 Mattson & “Big Bear” Benjamin Boone.

She doesn’t just accompany them to ringside, either … she gets involved. The video is after the jump, and it’s a must watch, because they, sometimes people are awesome.

Meet George Holscher, Perfect Game Bowler

Written by Brandon Stroud / 12.03.12

George Holscher bowling 300

Here’s a story that will either make you feel wonder at the power of the human spirit, or terrible about yourself because you are fat and lazy and can’t accomplish anything with a working everything: 48-year old George Holscher of Chesapeake, Virginia, bowled a perfect game.

The rub: He’s been paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair-bound since he was 25.

… when he rolled his perfect game Nov. 26, he became the second person ever to bowl 300 from a wheelchair.

“I know I said I can’t feel my knees, but let me tell you, they were weak,” Holscher said of how he felt after bowling a 300.

“When you’re on a streak like that, the whole house gets quiet,” Holscher said. “Everyone else stops bowling. It gets tense.” (via UPI.com)

This story is particularly inspiring to me, because I can’t reliably get the ball to the pins without Cosmic Bowling bumpers. I think my favorite part of the story are the anecdotes that different reporters have gotten, including this amazing one from The Virginian-Pilot about how he needs a special chair to keep from tipping over, and about how he bought his magical ball at a yard sale.

Two days later, Holscher returned to the lanes to demonstrate his technique. His bowling chair is a customized version of his everyday one – heavier, with sturdier wheel locks, extra seat support and a bolted-on ball stand. Resting on the stand: a dark blue, 14-pounder bought at a yard sale for $20.

Holscher polishes it lovingly with a small towel: “I’ve got some that cost $200 or $300, but this is the one that did it.”

George Holscher could say he has bowling fairies sitting on his shoulders when he bowls and I’d believe him. If you’ve never bowled a perfect game, hit up your neighbor’s garage and give George’s method a try. If ‘Parks And Recreation’ has taught us nothing else, it’s that unconventional bowling styles can work.
