With Leather’s Watch This: Screw Your Pizza, A Man Must Watch His Playoff Hockey

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.06.13

The above image of a pizza order was posted to Reddit over the weekend, as a Vancouver Canucks fan ordered his tropical chicken pizza for pickup on Friday night, presumably at the start of the third period, when Vancouver was trailing the San Jose Sharks 1-0. But Ryan Kesler tied the game within the first minute of the period, and that customer’s order quickly changed to delivery. Seven minutes later, the pizza seemingly became a hockey celebration prize, as the Canucks went up 2-1. Then it became an overtime feast when the Sharks tied the game at 2 late in the third. Finally, it became a feast of depression, as the Canucks lost 3-2 in overtime.

While I certainly feel for this fan… who eats chicken on a pizza? Gross, bros.

Hockey Fans Are Making Weird Requests About The Toronto Maple Leafs Playoff Run

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.23.13

CN Tower Toronto Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t touched the Stanley Cup in 46 years. That’s not the worst of it — they haven’t touched the playoffs since 2004, when they went out in game 6 of round 2 in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. This year, the drought is over. Well, the playoffs one. We’re still a long way from the Stanley Cup. The Leafs are playoffs bound, and folks like CBC Sports are having fun pointing out how ridiculously different life is since that final, sad game 6:

You won’t see a photo of Belfour making a save in Game 6 posted on Instagram, because it was still six years away from being invented. In fact, Instagram started as an iPhone app, and the first-generation iPhone was still three years away from introduction.

No one has ever tweeted about a Leafs playoff game. Twitter was still almost two years away from launch when the Leafs were eliminated by the Flyers. (via CBC)

Hey, look, I can play: Nobody ever made a Vine video about a Leafs Stanley Cup win, because computers weren’t a thing in 1967. With Leather has never written about a Maple Leafs Cup victory because Brandon was still over a decade away from being born!

Anyway, Leafs fans are taking advantage of this playoffs miracle by getting out all the ridiculous questions, ideas and requests they’ve been holding inside since 2004. For example, have you ever wondered how far the International Space Station has traveled in orbit since then? SOMEBODY HAS.

Introducing NHL Lockout Text Message Anger Management Therapy

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.02.12

We’ve entered Day 46 of the NHL lockout and there still seems to be no end in sight. The big news today is that if a deal can’t be reached within the coming hours, the 2013 Winter Classic will be canceled and that sucks, because that’s probably the only non-playoff game I watch during the regular season (go Blues, big fan). That cancellation would be in addition to the 326 regular season games that have already been nixed, but there is apparently a silver lining.

While I’m no sports labor expert, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. UPDATE: It was just canceled. The majority of analysis I’ve read over the past several days makes it seem as if the sky has already fallen, someone picked it up and used Scotch Tape to hold it in place, and then it fell again, this time killing some children and puppies.

But as usual, I started my morning routine by searching the webs and Tumblrs and Tweeters for humorous fan reactions and anything meme-worthy, and I came across two NHL bro pals who are handling the lockout in a rather amusing fashion, via text message anger management.
