Meet Gabrielle Gary, Mistress Of The Turnaround Out-Of-Bounds Hook-shot 3-Pointer

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.03.13

We don’t cover women’s basketball a lot at With Leather — even when we approach it professionally, it opens to the door for way too many PRETTY GOOD BASKETBALL PLAYING FROM THE KITCHEN comments, which are more or less the asshole of popular opinion — but this is too good not to share.

A player for Lafayette, Indiana’s McCutcheon High School Mavericks tried to save a ball from going out of bounds and ended up draining an improbable, impossible-outside-of-trickshot-videos three.

Gabrielle Gary of the McCutcheon Mavericks hits an improbable shot trying to save a loose ball. She went on to lead the team with 7 3-pointers on the night and a career high 24 points to win 56-36 against the Lafayette Jeff Bronchos. Pete Gascho and Dan Morrison on the call.

Big thanks to the folks at Bob’s Blitz (Bob?) for giving us the heads up on this. In her next game, Gabrielle should try standing in the rafters and trying to bounce the ball into a trashcan.

The Best High School Basketball Dunks And Plays Of Last Year, Because Why Not?

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.02.13

Here are the best high school basketball dunks and plays of the year. The video is even better when you remember that when I was in high school, I couldn’t run 10 feet without falling down. It’s even better when you remember that I can’t run 10 feet without falling down now. High school is probably awesome for some people, huh? (via Cosby Sweaters)

Playful Mascot Fight Becomes Dangerous Nerds In Costumes Fight

Written by Brandon Stroud / 12.13.12

Mascot DropkickFrom time to time, sports mascots will “fight.” It’s usually in the form of the Phillie Phanatic taking big, Curly-from-The-Three-Stooges wind-ups and knocking out a Mr. Met lookalike or whoever, and it’s all in good fun. When one of the mascots shows up to the comedy fight trying to dropkick the other, it becomes a for-real living Muppet shootfight.

Yet that’s precisely what rabid prep basketball fans in Kentucky received on Tuesday night, when Louisville’s crosstown rivalry between Louisville (Kent.) Male High and Louisville (Kent.) DuPont Manual High devolved into a massive brouhaha between the two teams’ mascots. (via Prep Rally)

As you can see from the video after the jump (forgive the vertical video syndrome and the guy getting so into the fight that he just films the armpits of the people around him), the ram mascot figures out the combination to the bulldog’s throwdown vault, and the two pretty much hockey fight. You can only hurt the other guy so much when you’re haymakering a big foam head, but they’re really going at it.

Sports On TV: Glee’s 20 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 10.11.12

Glee Dodgeball

I’ve prepared separate intro blurbs, depending on who you are. Find the one that is most appropriate for you!

I Don’t Watch Glee: I know, I know. Welcome to this week’s Sports On TV, featuring the first show I’ve ever watched specifically for the benefit of the column, FOX’s ‘Glee’. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a show your niece probably watched two or three years ago about a glee club at a Lima, Ohio, high school who interpret their feelings via reality-warping musical numbers. If you’ve never seen it and know what it is, yeah, it’s not great. However, if you’re a regular reader of the column, you’ll hopefully have a little faith in my writing/ability to write aggressively about stuff that sucks, so take a look through this one anyway. You’ll find a lot of funny jokes, a few pictures of hot girls and at least one video of zombie football players. That’s something, right?

I Watch Glee, And I Love It: Welcome to this week’s Sports On TV column, wherein I rag on that show you like because it’s not aimed at my intelligence level or demographic. Please read through the moments I’ve selected, tear apart any inaccuracies in my analysis, and show it to all of your friends so they can do the same. Make it really virally popular so nobody who likes ‘Glee’ will ever come here again!

I Watch Glee (Or Have Watched Glee) And Do Not Like It: You’re probably going to love this.

So please click through and enjoy the 20 greatest sports moments of ‘Glee’. *unnecessary bell ringing sound*

Nerlens Noel Dunk Nearly Kills Child, Nerlens Noel, Every Kentucky Fan In The Country

Written by Brandon Stroud / 09.21.12

Nerlens Noel dunk

Nerlens Noel is a 6-foot-10 18-year old from Everett High School in Massachusetts, rated as the #1 player in the class of 2012 by ESPN, poised to be the heir apparent to Anthony Davis at the University of Kentucky. He was in the middle of an on-campus pick-up game against a bunch of kids as a thank you to all the people who’d camped out for tickets to the school’s Big Blue Madness event when he went up for a dunk. The picture you see above this paragraph is the exact moment when everyone in attendance goes from “YEAH DUNK IT” to “oh my god we’re all doomed”.

For whatever reason, Noel bricked the two-handed dunk and went straight to the ground on his back. It’s hard to say what was going through the minds of the Kentucky fans watching, but the phrase “wailing and gnashing of teeth” comes to mind. If he’s hurt, there go the national title hopes. Luckily for everyone, he was all right. Want to know why? Because a child broke his fall.

Now that you know everyone involved is ‘find’, check out the video of the dunk, after the jump.

Sports On TV: The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’s 20 Greatest Sports Moments

Written by Brandon Stroud / 08.23.12

Fresh Prince theme song

On the last installment of Sports On TV, we tackled ‘The Wire’, a romanticized look at inner-city life and law in Baltimore, Maryland. If we drive an hour, then get into a fight on a basketball court and fly across the country, we’ll be ready for ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’, the 1990s sitcom that launched rapper Will Smith into mega movie stardom and gave ‘Silver Spoons’ star Alfonso Ribeiro an awesome paycheck for like seven years.

‘The Fresh Prince’ is one of my sentimental favorites (as longtime readers of The Dugout may know), so I was excited to tackle its 20 Greatest Sports Moments. I got something like 15 just from season 1 guest stars. Biggest possible thanks goes to Josh Koebert for helping me out with the images. Follow him on Twitter, he deserves your love for making this happen.

You’re probably already singing the theme song in your head, so let’s make this happen. The 20 greatest sports moment of ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’.
