The Providence Bruins Visited A Children’s Hospital In Fun Halloween Costumes

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.02.12

Just because the big boys in the NHL are locked out and/or playing overseas, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t any good hockey news to report. Take, for instance, the sweethearts of the AHL’s Providence Bruins, the developmental team of the Boston franchise with the same mascot. A number of the team’s players followed in the pro league club’s footsteps by spending their Halloween visiting the sick children at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Take the tissues out of your bloody nose and use them to wipe away the happy tears.

Following the example that Zdeno Chara, Adam MacQuaid and Brad Marchand set last year with Jordan Caron, the P-Bruins visited patients at the Boston Children’s Hospital on Halloween to enjoy some holiday festivities.

A crew consisting of Caron, Lane MacDermid, Max Sauve, Chris Bourque, Ryan Spooner, Torey Krug, Jared Knight, David Warsofsky, Matt Bartkowski and Ryan Button joined in the fun on Wednesday, going door-to-door not in search of candy, but for smiles. (Via NESN)

Obviously, when it comes to children, the players had to keep their costumes tame, so they couldn’t take a page from Biz Nasty’s playbook and dress like Cockzilla or something of that nature. I’m willing to bet I’m in the right neighborhood. Anyway, the Providence guys kept it clean with their G and PG costumes, but they deserve to be commended for bringing some smiles to the faces of children. After all, it’s more than just the owners, players and fans affected by the lockout.

Who Hulked It More Incredibly: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Or Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva?

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.01.12

Trick question: This dog wins.

There were obviously a lot of athletes dressed up for Halloween over the past several days, which makes it incredibly difficult to choose who, out of thousands, had the best costume. I still stand by my assertion that paralympic skier John Sundquist had the best costume, but other people felt otherwise, including our brethren bloggers who believe that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson perhaps “won” Halloween with his pretty fantastic Incredible Hulk costume.

Fortunately, we can now chop this debate down a little in subcategories, as Rocky wasn’t the only athlete to sport the angry green skin and messy black hair get-up this year. As it turns out, UFC heavyweight fighter Antonio Silva also dressed as the Incredible Hulk, and you can decide for yourself after the jump which athlete Hulked it better.

And Now, The Spookiest NBA Game Ever

Written by Brandon Stroud / 11.01.12

NBA Fog Machine Delay

In a SPOOKTACULAR moment reminiscent of the time McKinley High School made their football team put on zombie make-up and do ‘Thriller’ mash-ups at halftime, the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets opened their season with a fog machine malfunction with a minute left in the half and couldn’t restart play until someone got it under control. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen two teams of athletes and an arena full of technicians and professionals at the mercy of a fog machine.

It needs a Vincent Price “terrorize y’alls neighborhood” monologue over it, but you can check out video of the mishap after the jump. BUT BEWARE, ghouls and goblins etc.

Paralympic Skier Josh Sundquist Wins The Athlete Halloween Costume Contest

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.31.12

"What is a lamp, you nincompoop? It's a Major Award. I won it!"

When Josh Sundquist was 9-years old, he was diagnosed with bone cancer and the doctors gave him a 50/50 chance to live, according to his website’s bio. Ultimately, he had his left leg amputated after a year of chemotherapy, and I don’t know about you folks, but I don’t know how an adult could deal with that, let alone a 10-year old kid. But when doctors informed Josh at age 13 that he was cancer-free, he decided that he wanted to be a skier. Not only that, he wanted to compete in ski racing, which just makes me feel like an ass for skipping the gym for the past two three four five every month.

And not only was he eventually named to the US Paralympic Ski Team, and not only did he compete at the 2006 Paralympics in Turino, Italy (he didn’t win any medals, but neither did you), and not only is he the only athlete in history to be named to the Paralympic Ski Team and the US Amputee Soccer Team, but he also has a hell of a sense of humor about everything. That’s why he’s a bestselling author, a national spokesman for the Combined Federal Campaign, and the winner of this year’s athlete Halloween costume contest.

Josh dressed up as the lamp from A Christmas Story, and yes, it’s as fantastic as it sounds.
