The NHL’s No. 1 Draft Pick Really Knows How To Use Twitter

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.26.12

Last Friday, the Edmonton Oilers surprised no one when they selected 18-year old Russian phenom Nail Yakupov with the first pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Yakupov, according to this incredible top secret website that I use to research stuff, hails from the Republic of Tatarstan. A fun fact about that region: I’ve never heard of it in my life.

Anywho, Yakupov is apparently so excited to play for the Oilers and win the team’s fans over that he launched an impromptu Q&A session on his Twitter account last night. And if you’re wondering how the interaction between a Russian teenager with basic English language skills and his fans would play out, well, it was about as adorable as you’d expect.

Now that’s just a small sample, as he responded to a lot of his followers, and most of his responses were one word or just emoticons. But there was one Oilers fan who really wanted to bring out the best of Yakupov.

It Must Suck To Be Sergio Garcia

Written by Ashley Burns / 08.16.11

CBS Sports golf writer Steve Elling Tweeted the above photo yesterday, and if he’s to be believed, these four Gollums stalked Sergio Garcia throughout this past weekend’s 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Nevermind that Keegan Bradley defeated Jason Dufner in a playoff, as both golfers erupted from obscurity. I’m downright concerned for the safety of golf’s elite athletes.

OK, maybe elite is generous, as Garcia hasn’t won anything of note since 2008. But maybe that’s their thing – they stalk professional golfers who may have given up on life as their prime slips away. If that’s the case, then God help us all when they learn about Tiger Woods.

The Incredibly Strange Love Affair Of Kyrie Irving And @MissHawaii

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.07.11

When the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Duke guard Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 overall pick at this year’s NBA Draft, they may or may not have known that Irving was having some girl issues. Back in March, the sleuths at Black Sports Online discovered that Irving was involved with a girl named Jessica Jackson – calling herself Miss Hawaii on Twitter – but to what degree they knew each other was a mystery. So buckle up because we’re heading on a non-stop ride to Crazyville.

Jackson claimed that her and Irving first met through Twitter (when will people learn?) and began exchanging text messages, phone calls and Skype sessions, and since I don’t want to drag this out with boring details, she claimed it was all very sexual. Then something went wrong, and Jackson began publicly accusing Irving of harassing her to the point that she had to file a police report. So even though she claimed to be letting the law handle her problems, she went ahead and released images of their alleged texts and Twitter messages.

KEVIN COSTNER HAS TIME FOR THE LADIES

Written by JOSH Z / 07.30.09

I don’t think I’m being facetious, sexist, or even cynical when I say that you can judge a man’s success by the appearance of the women that try to sleep with him. And honestly, I shudder to think that this poor woman might have nothing better to do than chase Kevin Costner around the Canadian Open Pro-Am with a video camera. But hey, she got a room number out of it. Oh man, you’d think some people would have higher standards than that. Well, I would. Who wants to get with Kevin Costner, anyway? That Canadian wine must knock you on your ass. via.
