ROFLMNBAO: The 2011-12 Season Awards Edition!

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.03.12

I took a couple weeks off from doing these here ROFLMNBAO posts for two reasons: 1) because the last two weeks of the season were soooooo boring and B) I forgot. But I figured what better time than now to resume posting these NBA meme pictures since the news that they’re so in demand. Form a line to the left, attractive girls who want to give me money to create ridiculously corny-sounding sites!

Also, I figured it was a better time than any for this week’s installment with the playoffs in full swing and individual awards being presented by the league. As we already know, Tyson Chandler is the Defensive Player of the Year, Jason Kidd received the Sportsmanship Award and Gregg Popovich is the Coach of the Year. “What about the other awards?” you ask while peeling apart the pages of my vintage Hustler collection. The NBA is taking its sweet ass time with those, so I’m issuing my own awards.

A lot happened in this condensed season, so it’s only fair that we recognize everyone for their efforts.

LeBron James Fires Back At Heckler

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.14.11

On Friday night, LeBron James and the Miami Heat handed the Detroit Pistons a 106-92 whooping at the Palace of Auburn Hills that was considerably more lopsided than the numbers show. Regardless, the big story coming from that game is the self-anointed King’s handling of a heckler who invoked the good name of Gloria James, LeBron’s mother.

Asked the Pistons fan, “Is your mom going to Boston for Valentine’s Day?” And that’s humorous because LeBron’s mom allegedly had sexual congress with Delonte West, who now plays for the Boston Celtics. But to a guy who makes a bajillion dollars a year and hosts TV specials to announce his free agency plans, there are some lines you just don’t cross.

“What did you say to me?” James asked the fan.

“I said, ‘Is your mom going to Boston for Valentine’s Day?’” the heckler repeated.

“Say whatever you want to say to me. Just don’t be disrespectful, alright? Alright, OK?” he told the heckler. “I don’t give a (expletive) what you say. If you’re disrespectful, it’s a problem.” (Via USA Today)

This is a tough one, because on one hand LeBron is a gigantor douchenugget so it’s fun to make fun of him about his teammates having so little respect for him that they’ll sleep with his mom. On the other hand… there really is no other hand. LeBron’s a worldwide icon, whether we like it or not, but if he’s so magnificent and worthy of daily praise, spending his time reposting people saying how great he is on Twitter, then tough titties, dude. You’re gonna get heckled, so live with it.

More than anything, I’m disappointed in the heckler and LeBron for not turning this into an episode of “Yo Mama”. God knows Wilmer Valderrama could use the cash.

Now That’s How It’s Done, Philly

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.08.10

Peter Vermes MUG crop

Kansas City Wizards coach Peter Vermes, pictured adorably in his mug shot, was arrested back in August on charges of driving while intoxicated, and most of us never heard about it because 1) He’s a soccer coach, B) It’s the MLS, and III) It’s Kansas City. But that didn’t stop fans of the Philadelphia Union from doing their homework and bringing some serious A game to their Saturday match against the Wizards. You could even say they brought their serious AA game. *bowtie spins, falls asleep at red light*

When the Wizards took the field at PPL Park, Union fans serenaded Vermes with their own special rendition of “99 Bottles of Beer.” And they didn’t stop after one verse, nor did they stop after 2, 5 or 10. They sang every verse of the song, with a few breaks here and there to celebrate the action or to acknowledge other events, but nevertheless this is one of the most dedicated attempts at heckling that we’ve ever seen in a sporting event. It’s nice to see that we’ve moved beyond throwing up on people and flinging batteries around. *sniffs* Our angry sports town is all growns up.
