Morning Links: Rajai Davis #cangetit

Or, more specifically, Rajai Davis #cangoupandgetit. That two seconds where he slows down and purposefully times it makes this the catch of the year for me. (via Rant Sports)

Be As Cool As This Guy: Sign Up For Tonight’s Fantasy Game And Win $500

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.27.12

This guy’s my new hero. Spends a night at the Prog, rocks a vintage jersey, makes a great leaping barehand catch on a foul ball. The most athletic thing I ever did at an Indians game was track down the hot dog mascots for a picture, and the nicest thing I ever wore was cargo shorts. He is clearly my superior.

My recovery plan is to sign up for tonight’s fantasy baseball game with FanDuel.com, drop two dollars each in sign-up fees to register three teams and take my chance at winning cold, hard cash from a $500 prize pool. Maybe then I can afford a better jersey than this poor Ryan Garko thing I’ve been in for too long. Also, a baseball glove.

The games are fun, cheap and easy to play, so there’s no reason to not throw in. Here’s how it works:

We’re capping the league at 275 teams and the games that count in the contest happen tonight, so hurry on over to FanDuel using this handy dandy link and play. Be cool. I know you’ve got it in you.

Phillies Ball Girl #cangetit

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.24.12

Philadelphia Phillies ballgirl Genevieve Haney made a great catch during Monday’s game against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park. How do we know? MLB.com put it up and made it embeddable. Those guys don’t make World Series wins embeddable. So good for you, Genevieve, you’ve made it.

Because we’re perverts, we checked out Genevieve’s Twitter and discovered that she, like so many beautiful young women, are obsessed with Instagram. Think of her as Philadelphia foul territory’s Paulina Gretzky. We’ve put together a gallery of some of our favorite Phillies Ballgirl Instagrams, so check it out. They’ll be available for almost two hours before Busted Coverage puts action fonts on them and calls them an exclusive gallery.

And before you read my mind, yes, the Phillie Phanatic shows up in at least one of them.

An Amazing Catch You Won’t Believe (No, Seriously, You Won’t Believe It)

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.16.12

jiwan-james-amazing-catchDuring Saturday’s game in Reading, R-Phils outfielder Jiwan James scaled the wall to rob Bowie Baysox slugger Jonathan Schoop of a home run. The crazy thing about it is that he doesn’t catch it with his glove … he loses his glove completely and comes down with the ball in his bare hand. It’s one of the best (and most serendipitous) catches you’ll ever see, topping SportsCenter’s top plays and turning a double-A minor leaguer into an online sensation.

The only problem is that with the modifier “online” comes skeptics, and YouTube refuses to believe he caught the ball.

Theory 1: He trapped it.

ball definitely hits the wall…if you constantly hit pause and play at Around the 7 second mark of the video, you can see the ball go past his glove, and hit the wall at around the 8 second mark…hard to see, but its there (user chosen1soulja)

Looks like it falls into his chest and he either traps it against the wall and grabs it on the way down or he catches it off of his chest on the way down for the grab. (user pjfan14)

Theory 2: The ball he caught was a fake.

Important Update: Mike Trout Rules

Written by Brandon Stroud / 06.28.12

If you haven’t been following the story of Los Angles Angels rookie Mike Trout this season, here’s the gist: he’s everything you want to like about Bryce Harper without all the things you hate about Bryce Harper.

Via AOL FanHouse:

[J.J.] Hardy thought he had his 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning after he drove Jered Weaver’s breaking ball to deep right-center field. Trout ran all the way back to the warning track, leaped up and snagged the ball over his head before it landed beyond the fence. Trout hit the wall, landed on his feet and may have been more excited than Angels fans watching.

“Now that is Torii Hunter, circa 2002 against Barry Bonds in the All-Star Game,” the Angels announcer said as Trout celebrated the highlight.

Because they called it out by name, here’s that very Bonds clip for your comparing/contrasting needs:

Orioles Report: Old Lady In The Stands Has Better Hands Than Mark Reynolds

Written by Brandon Stroud / 03.28.12

fan-grabs-flying-bat-old-ladyWelcome to our newest column at With Leather, the Orioles Report! In the Report, we’ll be following along with the Birds’ 2012 season and chronicling the unique, exciting things that happen when the O’s take the field! NOTE: NO BASEBALL WILL BE FEATURED

Today’s episode, wherein an elderly woman sitting in the crowd holds a bat longer than Ryan Flaherty, from Holdout Sports:

It happened in the bottom of the second inning at the Phillies’ spring training stadium in Clearwater, Florida. Ruiz’ bat slipped out of his hands as he swung, and the bat landed just to the right of the woman, who may have been the oldest woman in that section of the park, but obviously still has enough reflexes to react and grab the bat.

(video via MLB.com)

Come for the standing ovation they give a lady for touching a bat from her seat, stay for the slow motion replay where Carlos Ruiz loses control of his bat and the section behind him does an involuntary point-wave.

Next week on the Orioles Report: the Oriole Bird accidentally hits a guy in the face with a hot dog, then eats the hot dog.
