Julian Edelman, Bradley Cooper Visited A Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor

Written by Ashley Burns / 04.19.13

The other day, New England Patriots receiver Danny Amendola Tweeted that he’d be donating $100 for every reception he recorded this season, as well as $200 for every dropped pass, to the Boston Marathon Relief Fund, and he received a mostly-gracious response. There were a few guys, though, who took offense to the Tweet and accused Amendola of being desperate for attention, and I could understand if people make the case that he’s trying to fill the big shoes of Wes Welker in terms of winning over Pats fans, but why the hell do we care? He’s awesome for doing anything.

Amendola’s new Pats teammate, Julian Edelman, and guy who should be my best friend, Bradley Cooper, also paid tribute, as they visited Jeffrey Bauman, Jr. in the hospital after he lost both his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing. Despite the intensity of his injuries, Bauman still provided the description of one of the bombers that led to today’s insane manhunt.

So people can criticize athletes all they want for being hungry for attention or seeking fame, but if that is the case, then more athletes need to seek attention, because it’s f*cking awesome when they do.

Meet The Bro Who Is Dragging A Giant Pair Of Boobs Across Antarctica For Charity

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.28.13

Antarctica is suddenly becoming a hot spot for giant breasts, as it started with Kate Upton and Sports Illustrated taking a trip to the South Pole to shoot the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and will continue with one man’s strange-but-awesome quest to break a world record. Specifically, adventurer Geoff Wilson is currently training for a November expedition to Antarctica, where he will set out to break the world record for a solo trip covering more than 1,675 miles of ice and, presumably, penguin doodies.

Why in God’s name would Wilson do something this insane when the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas is running awesome specials for winter months? He’s doing it for charity, of course. Wilson’s actual goal is to raise $1 million for breast cancer awareness and the McGrath Foundation with his “Pink Polar Expedition” that will feature him dragging a giant pair of pink breasts with him on his journey.

The Oklahoma City Thunder Traded Their Free Time To People In Need

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.21.12

I don’t know what it is about NBA players that makes them so much more fun to criticize and make fun of than other pro sports stars. Maybe it’s the holier than thou mentality or the rock star “swag” and godlike baller image, but people just tend to either love or hate NBA stars more than other athletes, and that’s typically fine because they seem to like it. And even though a lot of the league’s stars are as transparent as invisible glass, we’re still pretty big suckers for when they break character and the villain becomes the good guy or the good guy becomes the great guy by helping a good cause.

Before heading to Los Angeles for tonight’s game against the Clippers, the Oklahoma City Thunder, which you could argue is a team of good guys and Kendrick Perkins, hit up the City Rescue Mission in downtown OKC to serve food to more than 400 homeless people on Monday. Even if you absolutely loathe the Thunder, you have to admit that this was rather swell of them.

Sting’s Indestructible Soccer Balls Will Pave The Way For More Camouflage Bentleys

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.15.12

In 2006, inventor and songwriter Tim Jahnigen was watching a CNN documentary about kids in Darfur who were using balls of trash to play soccer because the balls they use are always quickly destroyed, and that gave him an idea – “I’m going to make a soccer ball that can’t be destroyed.” And unlike 99% of people who have such ideas for cool inventions like this, Jahnigen actually followed through with it and spent the next several years developing his new super ball. It also helps that he’s friends with Sting, and when the former Police frontman isn’t getting down with some tantric sex, he’s trying to save the world.

Over breakfast in 2007, Jahnigen told Sting how kids in Darfur love playing soccer and he had this idea for a ball that would never go flat or break, so Sting was all, “Quit your job and work on this.” And Jahnigen was all, “But it’s going to cost me, like, $300,000 or something like that” and Sting was like, “Hold on” and he reached into his back pocket and pulled out $300,000 for him and thus One World Futbol was born. That’s kind of how it went, but I’ll let Sting explain it.
