The Milwaukee Brewers Also Honored Boston By Playing The Cheers Theme

Written by Ashley Burns / 04.17.13

Not to be forgotten or excluded from the awesomeness that the New York Yankees and other teams displayed last night when they played “Sweet Caroline” at stadiums across the country to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, the Milwaukee Brewers also offered their respect and tribute in their own special, equally beautiful manner.

The Brewers decided to (fittingly) play the theme song to Cheers to honor the titular bar of one of the greatest TV series of all-time, as it was obviously set in Boston. I don’t know why this one chokes me up more, but it does. Either way, good on all of you blessed baseball towns for providing the figurative pollen and literal humanity last night and today.

Here’s A Reason To Hate Your Co-Workers

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.26.12

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the video that will soon be posted on 2 million Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as every blog from here to the European site that copies all of our posts, and I fully endorse the attention it’s about to receive. Tweeted earlier by Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina, this video is one of the rare reminders that there are good people left in this country and we’re not completely surrounded by hateful scumbags who are so miserable that their only natural recourse is to try to make the rest of us miserable.

But enough about politicians, this is about a guy named Kyle and the impact that he has had on his friends. An impact so strong, that it led to this heart-warming story and video. Watch it after the jump and I dare you not to reach for your Claritin.

West Virginia Fans Turned It Up To 11

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.02.12

"Now you guys, just the chorus!"

In Friday’s Watch This, I wrote that the Ohio State-Michigan State game was one of very few exciting games this weekend, and I admittedly overlooked the West Virginia-Baylor game entirely, even though it was the other matchup of two Top 25 teams. And on Saturday, boy did I feel like a dick for that one. With the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-0) pulling out a 70-63 win over the Baylor Bears (3-1), it’s very safe to say that both teams gave us an early and presumably unbeatable candidate for Game of the Year. You know, unless McNeese State and UTSA in Week 11 is as exciting as I’m predicting.

In case you missed it, WVU QB Geno Smith became an instant Heisman frontrunner and eventual Jacksonville Jaguars draft pick as he threw for 656 yards and 8 touchdowns. Meanwhile, WVU receiver Stedman Bailey had 13 catches for 303 yards and 5 TD. At the same time, Baylor QB Nick Florence passed for 581 yards and 5 TD, with his No. 1 target, Terrance Williams, racking up 314 yards and 2 TD. If I were degenerative enough to play college fantasy football, this game would have been a wet dream come true.

But forget the guys who actually go on the field and entertain us while sacrificing their health, this is about the thousands of fans who experienced an incredible game live and stuck around to the end. How Mountaineers fans had any voices left to sing is beyond me, but their time-honored tradition of singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” sounded just a little bit better than usual this week.

The ‘Good Job, Good Effort’ Kid Meant It

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.07.12

Two nights ago, after the Miami Heat lost a third straight game to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Internet was introduced to its newest star – The “Good Job, Good Effort” Kid. We didn’t know much about this young lad, other than he didn’t really understand the enormity of Game 5 and that he has the oblivious enthusiasm of Kenneth from 30 Rock. Either way, people loved hearing him shout that losing effort battle cry as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade sulked off the court.

And thank goodness Ihosvani Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel still has that investigatory urge, because the aftermath of “Good Job, Good Effort” was a vulture-like corpse cleaning of Internet tough guys fighting over who ran the phrase to Custom Ink the fastest. Rordriguez discovered the true identity of the young boy, and got to the bottom of his enthusiasm. Was it sincere or was it trolling?

“For those people who thought I was being sarcastic, you’re wrong,” [9-year old Jack] Meyer said at his family’s Coral Gables home Wednesday. “I was being enthusiastic. I was saying the truth. I would never hurt the Heat’s feelings like that.”

“Based on their expressions, they didn’t seem happy being beaten by four points. I wanted to cheer them up,” he said. “I really meant it.”

Good lord, that’s adorably refreshing. Granted, I doubt James, Wade, or any Heat fan feels that way, but it’s still a little heartwarming once the laughter subsides.

Of course, as we all know, memes die like matches in the wind these days, so his fame should be expiring as soon as the ECF ends, whether tonight or after a thrilling Game 7, like my gut tells me. Regardless, I can only hope Jack carries his enthusiasm over into next season after the Heat either trade one of the Big 3 or allow Wade to continue his downward spiral into the angriest man on the planet.

At Least Some Cubs Fans Are Being Proactive

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.30.12

The bad news for Chicago Cubs fans is that their team is dead last in the NL Central with a 17-32 record, 11 games behind the first place St. Louis Cardinals Cincinnati Reds. The good news for Cubs fans is that they’re not the San Diego Padres. At least not yet.

But in another rebuilding year this was expected, so it’s nice to see that some Cubs fans are having fun with what will probably be another losing season. For starters, as you can see in the banner, one Cubs fan was quite ambitious; however, I’m willing to bet that his prediction didn’t come true. Other Cubs fans, though, were so fed up with the losing that they were willing to do some serious cardio.

A group of Cubs fans trying to break the famed “Billy Goat Curse” set out from Mesa, Arizona, in February, on a mission to walk to Wrigley Field, and “Crack the Curse.”

The five friends and their goat “Wrigley” arrived in Chicago on Memorial Day, but first Matt Gregory, Kyle Townsend, Blake Ferrell, Patrick Fisher and Philip Aldrich trekked to the CBS 2 studio. (Via CBS Chicago)

Well, at least a .347 record is bringing something positive for the North Side, as they collected donations through their website to raise money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center over the past three months. And hey, crazier sports comebacks have happened before, so keep your heads up, Cubbies.
