With Leather Live Discussion: UFC 156

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.02.13

Ever since Georges St-Pierre made his triumphant return to re-capture his UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 154, we’ve been hearing this one phrase thrown around ad nauseum. That phrase? “Superfight”. That’s because Anderson Silva was on hand at UFC 154 in Toronto to watch St-Pierre knock the rust off, and a lot of us believed that was some sort of foreshadowing. Of course, it wasn’t, as Silva was in Toronto filming a movie, so he just attended the fight for the fun of it, but then UFC President Dana White said, “F*ck a bunch of that” and he swore to all of us that we were going to get a Silva and St-Pierre superfight in 2013.

In the meantime, we’re being treated to another superfight in tonight’s UFC 156 PPV event live from Las Vegas. In the main event, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is taking on Frankie Edgar in what many pundits and prognosticators are calling one hell of a matchup. Edgar, of course, has been one of the best lightweight fighters the UFC has ever seen, but back in August, after losing to Benson Henderson for a second time, he raised plenty of eyebrows when he declared that he’d be shedding some weight to drop down to the featherweight division. Thus, the superfight – a former UFC Lightweight Champion taking on the baddest Featherweight Champion of all-time.

Elsewhere, Alistair Overeem is making his return to UFC action now that his blood doesn’t match that of a rhinoceros, and he’ll be taking on Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, while 33-year old Rashad Evans will face off against 36-year old Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a battle of the old farts (writes the chubby 33-year old). You can check out the rest of tonight’s UFC 156 fight card after the jump, and as always you can check out our own Lobster Mobster’s breakdown. Prelims start at 8 PM ET on FX and the big fights hit the PPV channels at 10 PM ET. Other than that, CHAT TIME.

UFC 144: Edgar Vs. Omega Shenron

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.22.12

UFC 144 Japanese promoAnd here I thought a parody of the Brady Bunch theme was how they’d make me an MMA fan.

Please enjoy this Japanese promo for UFC 144: Edgar Vs. (Florence?) Henderson, which combines South Park’s “Let’s Fighting Love” with animated fight footage and some tried-and-true anime tropes — giant eyes, speed lines and ring girls straight out of Magic Knight Rayearth.

The nerd in me wishes they’d subbed in Lord Il Palazzo for Dana White and maybe had Brock Lensar slowly fill with light and explode when Alistair Overeem kneed him in the spleen, but whatever. I’m just happy with the accuracy of “protect my balls” UFC interviews and Rampage Jackson in the locker room with a couple of 11-year olds.

James Toney To Disable Randy Couture

Written by Ashley Burns / 08.26.10

UFC 118

As UFC 118 approaches, the headlining rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar for the Lightweight Championship has taken a back seat to the intriguing debut of former heavyweight boxer James Toney. In what UFC President Dana White has called a “circus act,” Toney will take on UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture, showcasing a clash of styles between Toney’s powerful punches and Couture’s atrocious acting.

But Toney’s style may be a bit more technical than casual MMA fans like myself are expecting, as he’s brought in Trevor Sherman to teach him how to fight against and break “Brazilian locks.” Who is Trevor Sherman, you ask? He’s the man who teaches FBI agents how to fight with their bare hands. He’s also the man who has never trained a MMA fighter before, but he says that he’s impressed with how quickly Toney has picked up his teaching. Well I’m sold, now if only there was a video of Sherman’s teaching styles after the jump…
