This Seems Like A Strange Endorsement Deal For Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.15.13

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. recently defeated Robert Guerrero to retain the WBC Welterweight title, win the vacant The Ring Welterweight title, improve to 44-0 all-time, and possibly also shut Ruben Guerrero’s mouth once and for all. But more than anything, the victory helped keep Mayweather’s nickname, “Money”, relevant because for the second consecutive year, Mayweather is projected to be the highest-paid American athlete.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Fortunate 50 list, Mayweather beat out LeBron James, Drew Brees, Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods, among others, to top this year’s list, as he will make an estimated $90 million by the end of the year. What’s amazing about that total is that not a single penny of it comes from endorsements.

But seeing that list reminded me of something that a friend recently passed along to me. If Mayweather doesn’t make any money from endorsement deals, does that mean that he allowed his image to be used in this delightful porn ad for free?

Ruben Guerrero Called Floyd Mayweather Jr. A Woman Beater

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.02.13

On Saturday, WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will once again not fight Manny Pacquiao, as he is instead taking on the interim WBC Welterweight Champion Robert Guerrero to determine the actual WBC and The Ring Welterweight Champion. And while that all sounds fine and dandy for Saturday, the sh*t talk hit the fan yesterday, as Ruben Guerrero, Robert’s father and trainer, called Mayweather a woman beater during a very awkward press conference.

“We’re going to beat up that woman beater, the one that beat up his wife, man,” Ruben Guerrero said, firing his arms into the air. “[He beat up] his wife in front of his kids. You guys like that [expletive]? You like this guy, this woman beater? He must have learned it from his Dad. Women beaters, baby. We’re going to beat that woman beater. We’ll see how he’s going to like it. He’s going to get it from a real man. Damn women beaters. We’re going to beat that woman beater down. I’m serious.” (Via Yahoo!)

Hell yeah, Ruben! You glorious bastard. The best part was that he prefaced this rant by claiming that he doesn’t “talk sh*t” and then he just laid all of this out there.

This Week In Beef: 50 Cent And Floyd Mayweather May Or May Not Hate Each Other

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.17.12

Rapper 50 Cent has long been the hard-working businessman, whether potentially illegally shilling penny stocks on Twitter to make him millions or standing around gyms and sneakily giving Joan Rivers energy shots, and every once in a while he even manages to, you know, rap. Apparently he also wanted to add boxing manager to his portfolio, as Fight Hype has reported that Mr. Cent and a man known as Tommy Smalls used a partnership formed in July and the Floyd Mayweather prison experience as the foundation for a coup to pry Mayweather from his friend and advisor, Al Haymon.

Initially, 50 Cent created The Money Team promotions several months ago and began signing boxers, and it culminated in a Twitter fight with Oscar de la Hoya over the future of Mayweather’s business and financial allegiance. Ultimately, 50 Cent said that he would pry Mayweather away and, according to Fight Hype, his plan was to lure Mayweather with promises of $1 billion in earnings by the time he retires.

And then a funny thing happened – 50 Cent formed a partnership with Manny Pacquiao. Awkward!

Congrats, Justin Bieber: TJ Lang Isn’t The Tweeting Champion Of The World

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.27.12

"Thanks for the f*ckin' Rewteet."

Since the Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, which included one of the most controversial calls in NFL history, Packers guard TJ Lang has gained roughly 90,000 new followers on Twitter. It’s not because he’s a charming fella or that he and fellow Packers guard Josh Sitton have a friendly rivalry over who is the better guard (it’s Sitton because he played at UCF, but I digress). It is, however, the result of two delightful F-bombs he dropped on Twitter after the game on Monday night.

By now, we’re all familiar with Lang’s “Tweets Heard ‘Round the World”, but in case you were cramming for a blood test, Lang first Tweeted this strongly-worded message to the refs…

Forbes’ Top 10 Highest Paid Athletes Is A Real Likable Bunch

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.21.12

I don’t know about you hard-working folks, but when I hear that Forbes has released its list of the 100 Highest Paid Athletes, it might as well be Christmas morning to me. After all, nothing makes me happier than the success of a person who was given a gift by the gods. Well, that’s not entirely true. What makes me incredibly happy is when that person is also a total dick. Because if you’re talented and wealthy, what’s the point in caring what people think about you?

And hoo boy, this year’s Top 10 is chocked with some athletes that really don’t give a sh*t what people think about them. That’s not to say that these are all necessarily terrible human beings, but they’re definitely not universally beloved. For starters, did you know that the highest paid athlete of the past year currently lives in a prison cell?

Haha, life is fair!

LeBron, Tiger Woods Place High On Depressing Forbes Celebrity Power List

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.16.12

Forbes magazine today released their annual The World’s Most Powerful Celebrities, a top 100 list that ranks stars based on press coverage, social media buzz and whose agents paid Forbes the most money to put them on a list. At the top of this year’s 100: Jennifer Lopez, who was settling nicely into obscurity as that lady on Eric Cartman’s hand in an old episode of ‘South Park’ before ‘American Idol’ rocketed her back to prominence. Former American Idol winner Taylor Hicks also made the list, coming in at number 4,544,022 between Burnsy and the golden voiced homeless guy.

Tiger Woods managed to hang on as this year’s highest ranking sports celebrity, coming it at number 12. The only other sports guy in the top 25 was LeBron James at number 15, despite Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal coming it at numbers 2 and 3 in “Press Rank” behind Lady Gaga. I don’t know how much of this list is based on math and how much of it is based on people at Forbes trying to name 100 celebrities, so bear with me.

Here’s a full list of the sports personalities who ranked this year:
