A Robot Helped A Kid With Severe Aplastic Anemia Throw Out The First Pitch At An A’s Game

Written by Brandon Stroud / 06.13.13

This manages to be weird, cool and touching all at the same time. Nick LeGrande, a kid with severe aplastic anemia, was able to throw out the first pitch at an Oakland Athletics game from 1,800 miles away with the help of a robot. An absolute must-see. And the kid’s got good form! (h/t to Bob’s Blitz)

An Army Dad Surprised His Daughter At A San Antonio Missions Game

Written by Brandon Stroud / 06.10.13

San Antonio Missions army dad surprise

I’ve been to a few San Antonio Missions games at Wolff Stadium, and here’s a quick list of pros and cons.

PROS - Minor League Baseball games are fun, the Missions do a lot of fun promotions (including the best fireworks I’ve ever seen at a minor league park) and they’ve got the greatest mascot ever, the Ballapeno. He’s a baseball playing jalapeño. This is us. Missions games also feature HENRY THE PUFFY TACO, which is exactly what it sounds like.

CONS - literally 3,000 degrees at all times

Watching clips from Missions games eliminates their only Con, so break out the tissues and enjoy this clip of a dad returning home from the Army to surprise his daughter during a ceremonial first pitch. It’s heartwarming. 3,000 degrees of heartwarming.

The timing for Maximum American Heart-swelling is about a week off, but your heart should still begin increasing in size when you watch this video of a Marine surprise-proposing to his girlfriend after throwing out the first pitch before a San Diego Padres game at PETCO Park.

Video is after the jump.

With Leather’s Watch This: Boston Marathon Victim Threw Out The First Pitch

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.30.13

On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox welcomed Boston Marathon bombing victim Jeff Bauman, whose legs were amputated after he was wounded in one of the explosions, to throw out one of two ceremonial first pitches. The other pitch was thrown by 52-year old Carlos Arredondo, who was one of the people who helped rescue people in the moments after the bombs went off, and he was immortalized in the AP photo of people wheeling Bauman to safety.

All I can say about Bauman is that he’s incredible. Watch that smile and joy as he throws an almost perfect strike and then try to complain about anything.

Lil Jon Threw Out The Opening Pop Fly At Friday’s Dodgers Game

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.27.13

One of my favorite moments during Saturday night’s UFC 160 PPV was when the camera showed rapper and Dave Chappelle muse Lil Jon bro-hugging some random guy who was barely important enough to be on camera, because it just adds fuel to my long-standing argument that the UFC really needs to start reaching out to more celebrities. I mean, unless people are impressed by Linkin Park’s bass player and Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis, in which case I’ll just shut up and mind my own.

But the funny thing about Lil Jon and that other random dude is that it was actually UFC legend Royce Gracie, who wasn’t fit to share more than 1/10 of the screen with a guy who is famous for shouting, “SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET” and “WHAT!”. And while I keep trying to figure out why Lil Jon is still famous – aside from recent appearances on The Celebrity Apprentice and The Jenny McCarthy Show – he was also at Dodger Stadium on Friday to throw out the opening pitch.

It went about as well as you’d expect.

A Man With No Arms Threw Out The First Pitch In Baltimore (Like A Boss)

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.10.13

Tom Willis no arms first pitch Baltimore

This week, With Leather has featured a lot of embarrassing attempts at the ceremonial first pitch. Tiffany Hwang of the K-Pop group Girls’ Generation adorably shanked her throw, and just this morning Burnsy wrote up the copycat who pulled the same fail in front of the Stetson Hatters. He forgot the cat ears, though.

Sometimes, believe it or not, the ceremonial first pitch can be GREAT. Want proof? Look no further than Tom Willis, a man who was born without arms who threw out of the first pitch at Thursday’s Orioles game. He may be the inspirational story you’re looking for. He may also be the neighbor on ‘The Jeffersons.’

Here’s the clip of his epic first pitch, which you should show to any Korean pop stars or Stetson fans you know, in an effort to shame them.
