NASCAR Fans Vs. Taiwan Animation, A Battle For The Ages

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.26.13

Next Media Animation’s “Taiwan Animation” of the Daytona crash has all the absurdity and hyperbole you’d expect — fans being killed and turned into cheering ghosts, all the cars being Toyota Corollas because they don’t have a stock car stock animation, NASCAR literally erasing the video from YouTube — but the best part is easily the fact that nobody at NMA thought, “hey, it’s probably a bad idea to ask NASCAR fans what they think of this insulting, wacky parody video made by Asians.”

From the YouTube description:

As every NASCAR fan knows, you come for the crashes and stay for the races. But are NASCAR officials taking fan safety seriously enough?

NASCAR fans are stoic. Talk to any fan and they will admit to accepting some level of risk when watching the races live. Furthermore, the fine print on the back of admissions tickets would seem to absolve race officials of liability if fans are injured.

But despite the risks, are NASCAR officials doing enough to ensure no fan is ever hurt? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Predictably, NASCAR fans left their thoughts.

Today In Ironic MMA News: Ronda Rousey Thinks GSP Is Only Popular Because He’s Hot

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.15.13

Ronda Rousey’s interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal has a lot of interesting moments — the sob story about how she’s too popular to go surfing, Ronda referring to her mom as both an “amazon matriarch” and the “biggest badass of all time, dude,” and a thing where she assigns X-Men characters to her family — but the best is the continuation of the weird Rousey/Georges St-Pierre feud she’s been trying to get off the ground for years.

Just before she starts on him again for being a ‘points fighter,’ she drops a soundbite that would make a legion of Tumblr girls ready their side-eye GIFs, assuming anybody on Tumblr pays attention to MMA: we only know who GSP is because he’s a sexy Canadian. You know, like Shania Twain.

She has, however, heard people compare her sex-appeal status to GSP’s.

“Everybody keeps coming up to me and saying, ‘Oh, do you think if you didn’t look such a way, people would like you so much?’

“I’m like, ‘Dude, if GSP was butt ugly, you wouldn’t want to know who he is so much.’

“I think he lucked out a lot that he’s Canadian. I love Canadians. They are the coolest, nicest, most patriotic people, and they will support their countrymen no matter what, and I think that’s commendable.

“But if GSP wasn’t really good-looking, and really Canadian, he would be really unknown.” (via Las Vegas Review-Journal)

If I’m GSP, my response to this is, “So what you’re saying is that I’m hot?”

Seriously though, in what part of Ronda Rousey’s brain does she think a ripped blonde from California who gets asked to take ass-first shots for ESPN The Magazine has to struggle for opportunity while a guy who looks like a Joe Rogan fantasy self-portrait and is from CANADA is celebrated for his beauty and lucky birthright?

If this was pro wrestling, it’d be building to an inter-gender match to unify the Welterweight and Women’s Bantamweight straps. It isn’t, though, so … Ronda Rousey’s kind of a jerk? Is that what we’re supposed to take away from this?

Stop The Presses: Shaquille O’Neal Is Still Talking About Dwight Howard

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.14.12

"OH NO HE DIDN'T!"

As we’ve previously discussed, one of the latest post-NBA projects of legendary center Shaquille O’Neal is the Comedy Shaq Channel on YouTube, which he is apparently trying to turn into a new version of the classic Def Jam series. And that’s great because he has a lot of funny comedians making videos for him, and he still has millions fans who are somehow still entertained by his goofy behavior. Included in that behavior, though, is his incessant need to pick on Dwight Howard, and it just does not get old for the Big Dead Horse Beater.

In a video for his new series, “Ask Dr. O”, that he posted yesterday, Shaq responds to this Tweet that he needs to stop “hating” on the Los Angeles Lakers’ newest center.

Shaq is a former professional athlete now employed by a network to be an analyst, and he won multiple championships in his career. That said, can you guess how Shaq justifies his endless criticism of the NBA’s biggest clown? That’s right – his rings. But he also makes an interesting point, too, so let’s analyze.

Isiah Thomas Sort Of Talked About The Dream Team Anniversary

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.14.12

Last night, the NBA network aired the highly anticipated Dream Team documentary to celebrate the 20th anniversary of arguably the most talented and dominating team in the history of any sport. As a child of the 80s, I’m fortunate enough to remember watching the Dream Team play and God only knows I wish I still had my Michael Jordan USA jersey, because I’d sell it to a hipster for $500.

But like anything good that is celebrated as legend by the majority, people out there now want to crap all over the Dream Team’s legacy, because Isiah Thomas was snubbed and Michael Jordan is a big ol’ dickhead for keeping him off the team (which is mentioned in the special). Either way, Zeke preemptively took his name out of the debate last night when he issued this statement.

Obviously, Thomas is “taking the high road” because he wants to get back into the NBA, either as a GM, team president, or maybe even a coach again. And he can’t do that if he’s bad-mouthing all of his fellow Hall-of-Famer legends. However, that does not mean this is an invitation for every John Q. Blogger to take up the fight in Thomas’ name.

If he’s really still bitter about it, then he should come out and say, “F*ck those guys, I deserved to be running point for the gold medal team.” Hell, I’d respect him more if he did. But until he does open up about it, let’s stop ruining our childhood memories of what may have been the peak of America’s global dominance at everything.

And in case you missed the special, you can watch it here while it’s available, and you should also check out the NBA’s extra footage. It’s a definite must-watch for any sports fan, or anyone who owned the Mo Money soundtrack.

The Best MMA Feud You’ll Read All Year

Written by Ashley Burns / 08.03.11

With Leather stock Russia image.

Russian fighter Aleksander Emelianenko, brother of Fedor, has long dreamt of leaving the mother land behind and starting a new life in America, as an ass-kicking UFC champion. For a while, it seemed like that dream was goulash, because Aleks had been linked to both Hepatitis B and C for quite some time. But as recently as March, it seemed like he could, in fact, be on his way to a UFC contract and fighting in the States, but that seems squashed because it has been 5 months and nothing has happened.

As for why he’s not here pummeling opponents right now, fellow Russian fighter Sergei Kharitonov offered his own insight in a recent interview with Valetudo.ru. Aleks blamed Fedor’s loss to Dan Henderson on his trainers, but Sergei defended those trainers because he previously worked with them, too.

“All organizations in the world know about his hepatitis C and nobody wants to have business with him. He has drunk himself into this disease. He is drug addicted alcoholic and criminal. All his disrespectful remarks to the athletes are just a bullshit. How can he fight with hepatitis? Nobody’s gonna take him to any tournament. He lies that he hasn’t been to prison but it’s not true. He has.” (Via Cage Potato)

Hey Sergei, why don’t you tell us how you really feel?
