Dookie Bolts After One Year

Written by JOSH Z / 04.06.11

Duke freshman point guard Kyrie Irving will enter the NBA Draft, according to his Twitter feed. That seems insane, especially since (a) Duke players almost always stay for four years under coach Mike Krzyzewski, and (b) there almost certainly will be labor uncertainty this offseason, comparable to what the NFL is experiencing right now. Surely

“Our whole program is overjoyed with having Kyrie here for one year and that he has the chance now to pursue a dream of being a high draft pick and a great player in the NBA,” said Krzyzewski.

–(school website)

Let’s not overdo it, Coach K. Some have Irving going No. 1 overall, and not even three more years at Duke would improve on that. Hey, it’s either get paid for not playing or not get paid for playing. It’s a no-brainer, really.

Jalen Rose vs. Grant Hill: Who’s The Blackestest?

Written by JOSH Z / 03.16.11

Unlike Burnsy, I didn’t catch the premiere of the Fab Five documentary on ESPN (sorry, I don’t lap up every dinky little program that the monolith tries to spoon-feed me), but Jalen Rose’s comments about Grant Hill and the Duke basketball team did not go unchallenged, and certainly not by Grant Hill.

Hill, who has 337 more career starts (and counting) than Rose, took to The New York Times to counterpunch Rose’s claim of insufficient blackness (Rose is now an analyst for ESPN, if you didn’t know). But the only thing more pathetic than Jalen’s attempt to cut down Grant Hill for being educated is Hill’s attempt to validate the blue-collar legacy of his family. It’s the 2011 version of “I have lots of black friends.” And it’s sad.

From Hill’s piece:

In his garbled but sweeping comment that Duke recruits only “black players that were ‘Uncle Toms,’ ” Jalen seems to change the usual meaning of those very vitriolic words into his own meaning, i.e., blacks from two-parent, middle-class families. He leaves us all guessing exactly what he believes today.

I am beyond fortunate to have two parents who are still working well into their 60s. They received great educations and use them every day. My parents taught me a personal ethic I try to live by and pass on to my children.

I come from a strong legacy of black Americans. My namesake, Henry Hill, my father’s father, was a day laborer in Baltimore. He could not read or write until he was taught to do so by my grandmother. His first present to my dad was a set of encyclopedias, which I now have. He wanted his only child, my father, to have a good education, so he made numerous sacrifices to see that he got an education, including attending Yale.

It says a lot that Rose felt the need to apologize to Hill before the documentary aired, that Rose felt that Hill wasn’t black enough to be a good teammate and still wasn’t black enough to gloss over commentary on that subject today.  It’s cool if Rose is just bent that Grant Hill actually met his own father, but calling him a b:tch in a documentary produced by a company that pays you for objective analysis is, at best, irresponsible.

Why everything has to be “black this” or black that” is something that I’ll never understand, especially when all the unity talk goes out the window whenever a pretty white girl shows up at the club. But one guy ran his mouth in what amounted to programming for his own employer. The other fired back from a column of one of the most-read publications of the world. You tell me which one is the sellout.

The West Region Slightly De-Mystified

Written by JOSH Z / 03.14.11

We’ll break down one region of the NCAA tournament per day until they get this damn thing started. Today: the West.

The Gist.

Despite seven national championships among its participating coaches, the West is clearly the weakest of the four regionals. This is a bunch of bi-polar, middle-of-the-pack power conference squads, a few over-achieving mid-major champs, and Duke. But seriously, without Duke, this looks like an NIT regional.

The West is also the only bracket without one of those silly “First Four” play-in games. The fact that the NCAA now refers to these games as “Round One” games doesn’t make them part of the actual tournament experience, and the fact that most online tournament pools (including ours) are taking entries until Thursday at noon exemplifies that. Black Guy Pushes Duke Past UNC

Written by JOSH Z / 02.10.11

Nolan Smith scored 34 points–a career high–as Duke came from behind to beat North Carolina last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 79-73. Fellow black man Seth Curry added 22 points of his own. How did your team managed to fall 16 point behind, Coach K?

“It wasn’t an X-and-O adjustment. … They were too excited,” Krzyzewski said. “‘Nuts’ is the word. What are you guys doing? It’s not like, ‘You know, you guys aren’t playing hard.’ They’re playing hard. … When you go like that, you’re not coordinated, and it was more to get a coordinated effort on the offensive and defensive ends.”

–Rivals/Y!

Fifth-ranked Duke have now won 33 straight at home; they assume the lead in the ACC. That’s fine, because I’ve developed fresh anger for the pompous ass that is Roy Williams. Hating Duke is so 2004; they’re not the scrappy, deceptively fast program that they used to be. Would you believe me if I told you that six of the 12 Dookies listed in their media guide were African-American? I’m not very good with math, but that’s, like, a lot.

Flop Floppy Flop Flop Flop

Written by Ryan Walsh / 01.13.11

The unranked Florida State seminoles defeated the top ranked Duke Blue Devils in Tallahassee last night, which is great, because I love it when bad things happen to teams that receive special treatment. And before you even start complaining about me jealous, I want you to look at the above screen shot from last night’s game. Chris Singleton, one of the Seminoles’ key players, picked up his fourth foul on a horrendous offensive foul call, for which Kyle Singler deserves an Oscar. Singler flails around, falling four yards back to somehow get the call, probably because Coach K works officiating crews like Charlie Sheen works booths at the AVN awards.

What’s more infuriating is how the media treats the Blue Devils. It’s no secret how much Dickie V loves Duke, but it’d be nice if Dick didn’t let his man crush on Coach K prevent him from being a competent announcer. In his words, Dickie V was Awful with a capital ‘A’, baby!

Duke Lax Accuser Serves Time For Child Abuse

Written by JOSH Z / 12.22.10

Alleged Duke lacrosse rape victim Crystal Mangum found herself back in the news earlier this week, and it wasn’t because she was putting her newfound police psychology degree to good use, either.

Mangum, 32, found herself in legal trouble for smashing her boyfriend’s windshield, slashing his tires and then setting his clothes on fire, allegedly in response to being punched in the face by him.

Because her three children were in the Durham, N.C., house where these activities were taking place, prosecutors brought the child abuse charges.

She served 88 days in jail, two days shy of what the maximum penalty would have allowed.

Questions the jury asked Jones during deliberations suggest the three dissenting jurors thought she was reckless in setting fire to a pile of her boyfriend’s clothing in their bathtub. That fire ended up charring the walls and ceiling of the bathroom, with Mangum’s three children and two police officers in the apartment.

–Raleigh News-Observer.

Doesn’t “Mangum” sound like the perfect name for a stripper? Mangum. Man. Gum. Awesome. By the way, she managed a mistrial on that first-degree arson, although some people thought that she was being treated harshly for her rape accusations of four years ago. The boyfriend that allegedly punched her in the face, by the way, wasn’t charged. Probably because he wasn’t on the “lineup card.”
