“I Thought Grant Hill Was A B*tch”

Written by Ashley Burns / 03.14.11

Like most people I tuned in to watch the “Fab 5″ 30 For 30 special on ESPN last night and like most people I just sat there and wondered why Chris Webber was too cool for school. But lost in this celebration of a team most ESPN viewers are too young to remember was the above wonderful clip of the former Michigan players giving their thoughts on America’s least favorite team, the Duke Blue Devils. I really enjoyed this 30 For 30 edition, because we so rarely get to see Eric Montross highlights these days, but 1) I’m down for anything that makes fun of Christian Laettner and B) I could listen to people call Grant Hill a bitch for the rest of my life.

Call me a filthy Orlando Magic homer all you want, but Hill’s tenure in Orlando was grand theft, so anytime I listen to someone make fun of him my ears perk up a little. I’m like a dog getting my butt scratched every time I watch this clip.

Black Guy Pushes Duke Past UNC

Written by JOSH Z / 02.10.11

Nolan Smith scored 34 points–a career high–as Duke came from behind to beat North Carolina last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 79-73. Fellow black man Seth Curry added 22 points of his own. How did your team managed to fall 16 point behind, Coach K?

“It wasn’t an X-and-O adjustment. … They were too excited,” Krzyzewski said. “‘Nuts’ is the word. What are you guys doing? It’s not like, ‘You know, you guys aren’t playing hard.’ They’re playing hard. … When you go like that, you’re not coordinated, and it was more to get a coordinated effort on the offensive and defensive ends.”

–Rivals/Y!

Fifth-ranked Duke have now won 33 straight at home; they assume the lead in the ACC. That’s fine, because I’ve developed fresh anger for the pompous ass that is Roy Williams. Hating Duke is so 2004; they’re not the scrappy, deceptively fast program that they used to be. Would you believe me if I told you that six of the 12 Dookies listed in their media guide were African-American? I’m not very good with math, but that’s, like, a lot.

Flop Floppy Flop Flop Flop

Written by Ryan Walsh / 01.13.11

The unranked Florida State seminoles defeated the top ranked Duke Blue Devils in Tallahassee last night, which is great, because I love it when bad things happen to teams that receive special treatment. And before you even start complaining about me jealous, I want you to look at the above screen shot from last night’s game. Chris Singleton, one of the Seminoles’ key players, picked up his fourth foul on a horrendous offensive foul call, for which Kyle Singler deserves an Oscar. Singler flails around, falling four yards back to somehow get the call, probably because Coach K works officiating crews like Charlie Sheen works booths at the AVN awards.

What’s more infuriating is how the media treats the Blue Devils. It’s no secret how much Dickie V loves Duke, but it’d be nice if Dick didn’t let his man crush on Coach K prevent him from being a competent announcer. In his words, Dickie V was Awful with a capital ‘A’, baby!

They Are Who We Thought They Were: The Best Sports Moments Of 2010

Written by Ashley Burns / 01.05.11

While the entirety of the mainstream media began releasing Best Of lists in the first week of December, I wanted to wait as long as I possibly could to create my own, because of, you know, all of the games that take place throughout December. But who cares about college football anyway, right? Screw the bowl games and their rightful observation for prestigious consideration. And I was right to wait, because I originally had UConn’s winning streak in my Top 10 – I was trying to impress a girl – and now? *fart noise* Better luck next 90-game winning streak, Lady Huskies!

We had our fair share of great stories in 2010, those that made us feel good and appreciate the positive nature of competition on the grander scale. But screw all that, right? Our culture loves to witness failure and hoo boy did we have some failure this year! We had so many head-scratchers and stomach punches that there are certain athletes who could get their very own Top 10 lists. But they don’t deserve it. Hell, there are a few guys on the list you’re about to read that I wish we never had to talk about again.

I heartily expect everyone to disagree with my choices and where they rank, and that’s why I love sports and Top 10 lists – they both inspire the most nonsensical arguing outside of politics. As always, please share your thoughts, criticisms and misguided hatred for your parents in the comments.

With that said, here are my Top 10 sports moments of 2010…

Coach K Is Now The Second Best

Written by Ashley Burns / 12.30.10

Universally beloved Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski moved into second place on the all-time NCAA men’s basketball wins list, as his Blue Devils defeated UNC-Greensboro 108-62 last night at the Greensboro Coliseum. The win is No. 880 of Coach K’s 35-year career, and he now sits 22 wins behind Bobby Knight, and also when he pees, according to every North Carolina Tar Heels fan.

The win is Duke’s 22nd in a row, as the No. 1 ranked Blue Devils had a nice eight days of rest before their grueling matchup with UNC-Greensboro last night. But while the win is nice and the ranking is great and team playing at its best despite injuries is exceptional, this moment is all about one man and his place in the history books. One man is bigger than the moment, and I think everyone would agree that we need to be showering praise upon Coach K. Take it away, Mikey…

Breaking: Dickie V Loves Coach K

Written by JOSH Z / 12.21.10

What’s that? Does college football “analyst” Dick Vitale have some sort of inherent bias for Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Mike Krzyzewski. This is news to me. I always thought of Dick Vitale as an unbiased journalist, just like I think of everyone else at ESPN. Any thoughts on that, Will Leitch?

Vitale returned from his throat surgery last night for the Duke-UNC game, and we were reminded once again how much we absolutely cannot stand him … Those who say Vitale is owed a considerable amount of credit for college basketball’s explosion over the last 15 years sound correct to us: When our Illini team of 1989, with Nick Anderson, Kenny Battle and Kendall Gill, busted out, it was Vitale whose voice we would all imitate while playing basketball in the back yard. “The Flying Illini, Baby!”

Of course, we were 13 years old, and 13-year-olds are stupid.

–Leitch/Deadspin [2008].

That’s about right. But why am I getting all worked up? College basketball doesn’t start until March.
