St. Louis Had A Dog Parade And It Was Classier And More Intelligent Than Others

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.04.13

Yeah, getcha some.

As with any Super Bowl, my favorite Monday pastime is reading everyone’s analysis of what they loved and hated, but with much more enthusiasm for the latter. My reason for this is that I simply like to turn my brain off and relax a little, because by the time the biggest game of the year has finally wrapped up, I need a little breather. Basically, I agree with Arian Foster that today should be Labor Day. That said, the leader in my clubhouse for best post-Super Bowl rant thus far goes to Will Leitch and his essay on the complete meltdown by CBS’ announcing team during the blackout last night.

Between Shannon Sharpe’s broken cliché machine and Bill Cowher actually suggesting that the San Francisco 49ers should bench Colin Kaepernick in the Super Bowl, I thought my head was getting close to a Scanners moment. Hell, they should have just brought out Rick Reilly and Kaepernick’s birth mother to finish us off.

That said, it’s an otherwise slow news day, unless you count a dog parade and I always count dog parades. This weekend, the fine people of St. Louis hosted the 19th annual Beggin’ Barkus Pet Parade in Soulard, according to the folks at KSDK 5, and there was even a lobster dog. Granted, it wasn’t THE Lobster Dog, but we take what we can get.

It’s The Best Of The 2012 Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade Contest

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.24.12

The hardest part of owning a dog isn’t training it and remembering to do all the small things like feeding, walking and bathing it, nor is it teaching it how to run up to big breasted women with a rose in its mouth and a tiny little envelope with a hotel room key attached to its collar. No, the most difficult thing about being a dog owner is determining when it is acceptable to dress a pet in costumes, and the answer is two-fold: 1) On any holidays or sports game days for photos only and 2) Halloween. Those aren’t my rules, just Vatican law.

And people in New York City agree with those rules, as they gathered this past Saturday for the annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade and costume contest to determine which of the pooches in attendance wagged it best. The winner? Gracie, the puggish sort of thing in the banner pic.

The weather cleared up just in time for Saturday’s annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. A tradition 22 years strong, this year’s costumes did not fall short with creative looks like Fifty Shades of Grey, Mutt Romney and this adorable Corgi Fire Truck. And while all the hundreds of outfitted pooches were winners in our book, Evita placed first with her ornate outfit. (Via Petside)

But when it comes to Halloween dog contests, there can’t really ever be just one winner, unless it’s a bulldog dressed as the devil. Unfortunately, there were no bulldogs dressed as devils at this year’s Tompkins Square parade, just a ton of other dogs in great costumes. After the jump, check out some of our favorites, and there are plenty more over at Petside and the HuffPo.

The Oakland A’s Set The Most Important World Record Of All-Time: Most Dogs

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.24.12

Despite hitting a horrendous .228 as a team on the season, the Oakland A’s are currently one of the hottest teams in baseball, thanks to the league’s 4th best pitching staff. The Athletics are 14-2 since July 1 and they just completed a 4-game sweep of the best team in baseball, the New York Yankees. While they still have a 6-game deficit to the Texas Rangers in the AL West Race – and are trailing the resurgent Anaheim Angels by a game for second place – the A’s are at least doing the spirit of Moneyball proud with another inexplicable summer of success.

But screw all that, because it doesn’t hold a candle to what Oakland’s fans accomplished last Thursday before the series opener. Like many teams, the A’s tried to drum up fan support by allowing people to bring their dogs to the game. The response was rather surprising, as the fans ending up breaking a world record for the most dogs at one baseball game.

With the start of the first inning the A’s and their pet-friendly fans set off to embark on a world record for most dogs at a game.

With 718 dogs of all shapes and sizes and many dog owners on hand the Oakland Athletics set the world record at Dog Day for the most dogs in attendance during a sporting event. The number needed was 600; the A’s fans and their ‘best friends’ broke it by a large margin. (Via the Martinez News-Gazette)

And then some baseball happened, but who cares? They had 718 dogs at the Coliseum! Alas, that’s also the source of my great disdain. How do you have 718 dogs and barely anyone takes photos? This is why America is falling behind in everything. Nobody has the ambition to do what’s necessary in photographing 718 dogs anymore.

Thankfully a few people came through with some photos after the jump.

The Best Of The 2011 Tompkins Square Park Dog Parade

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.25.11

Back in July, fans of the San Diego Padres gathered at Petco Park as they hoped to break the world record for the longest costumed dog parade as part of the organization’s annual Dog Days of Summer promotion, which allows fans to bring their pooches to the ballpark. Not only did they end up setting the world record, but they created a new sensation for dog owners across the country. For some reason, people really want to break the record for most costumed dogs in a parade.

Dog owners in Cleveland made their best effort this past weekend and they unfortunately fell short. Hell, a guy in Pittsburgh even tried to set the individual record for most dogs walked. Alas, there is controversy in this canine competition, as a Long Beach, CA man believes that he has already bested the Petco effort and will gladly do it again.
