A BRIEF PAUSE

Written by Matt / 09.11.08

Pardon the interruption from lowbrow sports coverage, but I want to close the day by taking a little break from our daily idiocy to recognize the 3000 innocent people who were killed seven years ago, all because some dark souls hate and fear America.

I’ve written about this before at much greater length, so I won’t prattle on about patriotism and service and all that.  But I think it’s important to periodically run our fingers over our scars, to remember the events that made us what we are.

When your television shows those names getting read at Ground Zero, don’t change the channel.  Don’t roll your eyes and ask why they’re doing it again this year.  Go ahead and sit through a little bit of it.  Weigh what those names mean, the sheer volume of them, how many lives each one touched.  Think about what the orphaned children looked like seven years ago.  And keep in mind that this event led to a war that’s now taken a thousand more American lives than 9/11.

If you’ve ever wondered why I’m so dismissive of people who take their sports teams too seriously, this is it.  There are much bigger things that deserve our attention, our passion, and our anger.

DESHAWN WANTS TO MAKE LOVE IN THIS CLUB

Written by Matt / 08.14.08

Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson, last seen bro-ing up with Soulja Boy in the NBA playoffs, has made a video of himself lip-syncing to Usher's "Love In This Club," and D.C. Sports Bog noted that the description of the clip is "the best video ever put on youtube."  Although I don't really see how that's possible.  Maybe if DeShawn were rollerblading and got hit in the nuts I could agree.  This is just bad lip-syncing in front of a poster of himself.

DESHAWN STEVENSON IS SMART

Written by Matt / 04.30.08

Wizards loudmouth DeShawn Stevenson — he of the "I can't feel my face" gesture when his team is losing by 15 — was obviously unhappy with merely calling LeBron James overrated and playing defense with flagrant fouls against the best player in the Eastern Conference (also known as the "Rape-a-Bron" tactic).  None of those actions alienated the full 100% of casual fans glancing at the Cavs-Wiz series.

So yeah, showing up in a Michael Vick jersey should probably do it.

Whatever, he doesn't have any balls until he wears a Rae Carruth jersey.  Because only 98 or 99 percent of all people are against dogfighting.  You really need to come out in support of murdering pregnant girlfriends if you want to make sure people know you're a dick.

OUCH

Written by Matt / 04.15.08

Danny Granger scored a direct hit on Antawn Jamison's testicles last night, and the resulting nut shot isn't half as entertaining as the announcers' reactions, which include laughter followed by "That's not a laughing matter, actually," a perfectly in-unison "OOOOOHHH!" and the shattering insight of "That was a BULLS-EYE!"

Really, the only thing missing is, "And now let's go courtside to sideline reporter Nelson Muntz for his take.  Nelson?"

DESHAWN STEVENSON’S ’80S-THEMED BIRTHDAY

Written by Matt / 04.03.08

Even though an unheard-of Bucks rookie named Ramon Sessions spoiled the return of Gilbert Arenas last night (17 points in 20 minutes on 5-of-9 shooting) in the most heartbreaking way possible, there was no stopping the Wizards from letting loose and having a blast at DeShawn Stevenson's '80s-themed birthday party.  Pictured here is DeShawn with some of the Wizards dancers, all of whom were wearing DeShawn-inspired t-shirts, a carry-over from the second half of the loss to the Bucks where they rocked "I can't feel my face!" half-shirts.

Lucky guy.  The only time you see large groups of women wearing shirts with my face on them is outside the courthouse whenever there are missing strippers.  They're all "Justice!" and "Put him behind bars!"… as if putting me behind bars is gonna help.  That's where the liquor is.

Many more photos of the Wiz and other DC celebs like Clinton Portis at D.C. Sports Bog.  Not pictured: George Bush and Dick Cheney as Mike D and Ad-Rock.

KINGS DANCERS REALLY LIKE THOSE G-STRINGS

Written by Matt / 02.19.08

Okay, puritanical American traditions, you may be able to force the Kings' Royal Court dancers to wear pants or skirts, but NOTHING can stop them from showing off their underwear.  Although this may be the most popular method, as you can see from the photo above — courtesy an anonymous tipster — the Royal Court is also deft at showing off their G-strings while on the Maloofs' clock.  Believe me ladies, I understand: I deal with the struggle against pants every day.  When your crotch has magical healing powers like mine does, you just want to share it with the world.  At least, that's what I told the prosecutor.

While I'm on the subject of NBA dance teams, I'd be remiss if I didn't point you in the direction of Don Chavez, who has a couple posts about the Wizards' dancers kinda-not-really misbehaving.  It's worth your time to check it out, but not my time to make a whole gallery and post about it.
