AMERICA SLIPS IN CURLING VS GERMANY

The United States men’s curling team had high hopes for the Vancouver Olympics, having medaled in Turin in 2006. But the quartet, skipped by Minnesotan John Shuster, dropped their tournament opener to Germany, 7-5.

Scotland and Canada, who also won today, are the favorites in this year’s Games, but curling itself always seems to get a nice boost in popularity during the Olympics. The sport already has been featured on “The Simpsons.” It’s easy to see why the sport on ice gets hot; curling is like bocce balls on ice, but with janitorial duties mixed in. And yet the Americans took four white guys to Vancouver. You’d think any makeshift housekeeping business would leave those guys in their dust. Read the rest of this entry »

FAKE

Written by JOSH Z / 11.09.09

I don’t know if you saw that viral Samsung ad where the guy made his camera “disappear,” but they’ve come out with another one that’s still relatively new: this one takes place on a hockey rink. And if that guy actually took a curling stone and slap-shot it over the goalie’s glove, then I’m Kanye West. It’s just so blatantly fake that I can’t help but post it and indulge these bastards with the exposure for which they’ve been pining. Well played, Samsung. Crafty Korean bastards. –Copyranter. Thanks, Mark

I CAN’T WAIT FOR CURLING SEASON

Written by Matt / 08.24.07

Every time I see something on College Humor I get depressed because it reminds me how long it's been since I left college.  And every time I see feathered hair, bushy mustaches, and idiot Christmas sweaters, it reminds me just how much I miss curling.  I always get SWEPT UP in the action.  Get it?  (I chose to go with italics, boldface, and all-caps on that pun because I was afraid it might be too subtle.)

CANADIANS DEFEAT COMIC STRIP CHARACTER

Written by Matt / 04.08.07

Canada won the Curling World Championship today:

EDMONTON, Alberta – Glenn Howard led Canada to the curling world championship with an 8-3 win over Germany on Sunday.  Canada took a 4-0 lead in the first end over Andy Kapp's Germany team and was never threatened. Germany eliminated Todd Birr and the United States in a semifinal Saturday.

It's a shame people stopped reading that comic strip, and Andy had to move to Germany to begin hefting the heavy stones.  What's that you say?  An activity that involves sliding a rock on ice and sweeping is not a sport?  Well our friendly neighbors to the north would politely disagree, and if you're ever stuck in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in a blizzard and a television aerial is your only contact with the outside world, you will watch it.  You may even bet on it.

Your Sunday evening assignment: Type 'sexy curling' into Google and see what happens.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised – especially the ladies. -KD
