
The United States men’s curling team had high hopes for the Vancouver Olympics, having medaled in Turin in 2006. But the quartet, skipped by Minnesotan John Shuster, dropped their tournament opener to Germany, 7-5.
Scotland and Canada, who also won today, are the favorites in this year’s Games, but curling itself always seems to get a nice boost in popularity during the Olympics. The sport already has been featured on “The Simpsons.” It’s easy to see why the sport on ice gets hot; curling is like bocce balls on ice, but with janitorial duties mixed in.
