Hockey, Improving The High School Experience By Hurting Everyone There

Written by Brandon Stroud / 02.05.13

I really enjoyed watching this commercial for a Michigan-area high school hockey game between schools Clarkston and Lake Orion, but I can’t settle on a reason why. What I have so far includes:

1. As a Washington Capitals fan, the NHL is basically the saddest thing to me ever right now, and I have to remember that I like the sport whether or not it’s crushing my will to live.

2. Watching children get hurt is always fun, especially if they’re high schoolers.

3. You could set anything to ‘The Hockey Song’ by Stompin’ Tom and it’d be enjoyable.

But yeah, I live in central Texas and even I’m considering trying to make it up for this. If you live in Michigan, hit it up and demand the same amount of entertainment as presented in the commercial. If kids aren’t being attacked by hockey guys and blasted in the head with soda cans, it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to total satisfaction.

Warning: Kris Humphries Is Being Funny Again

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.30.13

Kris HumphriesAt long last, Brooklyn Nets player of note Kris Humphries is returning to the world of comedy. You may remember him from his previous attempts at being funny, which include Funny Or Die’s ‘Kris Humphries Is A Douchebag’ and that time his wife got impregnated by Kanye West.

Humphries joins James Harden in a Super Bowl ad for Foot Locker that leaked (cough) today. Here’s the plot: James Harden is cool, and if you make him mad by rewearing a pair of shoes, he’ll force you to hang out with Kris Humphries. I don’t know.

CBS rejected a commercial for PornHub but lets Kris Humphries slide? Somebody at that network needs to get their priorities straight.

People Seem To Be Upset With Kate Upton’s Super Bowl Ad For Mercedes

Written by Ashley Burns / 01.22.13

By now, you’re probably aware that Mercedes signed With Leather’s 2011, 2012 (and pretty much every year beyond that until the end of time or she turns 30) Celebrity Sports Fan of the Year Kate Upton for its Super Bowl ad campaign, and today we’ve finally been gifted with a teaser ad. And right from the start, Mercedes grabs my attention, flips it over and shakes all of the money from its pockets with this disclaimer:

Of course, we’d be pretty shocked if a classy automobile manufacturer like Mercedes went the Carl’s Jr. route instead of bringing something a little more clever to the party. Needless to say, Mercedes had that in mind. Sorry to disappoint, fellas.

NBC Is Just Making Up NHL History As They Go

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.17.13

The NHL needs a “previously on” recap before games, I guess.

Hockey’s been gone so long, even the networks airing hockey games don’t remember what happened the last time the NHL was in season. They know the Kings won the Stanley Cup. Their logo has a basketball on it for some reason, right? They know Wayne Gretzky’s daughter has an Instagram account and a fantastic body, and Wayne Gretzky was a hockey guy, probably. The rest? They’ll just make that up as they go.

As an example of what I’m talking about, here’s an ad for NHL on NBC, wherein they hype saturday’s Pittsburgh/Philadelphia game by saying Claude Giroux and the Flyers “have their sights set on revenge for last season’s playoff loss to Pitt.” Uh, you know, that series the Flyers won in six games and pretty much dominated. Was NBC not around for ‘Knock Knock?’ Oh well, at least they know who Claude Giroux is, and didn’t just call him Eric Lindros.

If we’re gonna fan-fic last year’s playoffs, can we write in a thing where Alex Ovechkin tried really hard, and the Caps didn’t make me feel terrible again?

You Probably Don’t Want To Know What’s In That Cup, Rory

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.14.13

Nike No Cup Is Safe

When Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy hit the range, no cup is safe.

“When Tiger Woods starts texting you, no cup is safe!” And other jokes!

Here’s the latest commercial form Nike, the first to feature Rory McIlroy, the number one golfer in the world, as the Dennis Mitchell to Tiger’s Mr. Wilson. It’s a reinvention of the McDonald’s classic, “The Showdown,” and if this campaign ends with Rory playing golf with the Looney Tunes, we’ll know it’s been a success.

You can check out the clip below, courtesy of Shane Bacon over at Devil Ball Golf. Or, you know, wait a few weeks and watch it during every commercial break for three months. Your call.
