Behold, The Yao Ming Golf Swing

Written by Brandon Stroud / 10.23.12

Yao Ming Golf Swing“Yao Ming being adorable” is up near the top of the things With Leather loves most, somewhere between Phillie Phanatic human interest stories and Kate Upton outtakes. And while nothing could ever replace Yao Ming holding a panda in our hearts, the Yao Ming golf swing is coming awfully close.

Everything about it is beautiful. The swing itself. The way he just stares at the ball after he misses it, then holds his hand out like he can’t believe what the ball just did. The plainly-stated YouTube description, with an explanation for what’s happening:

Yao starts a new career in golf in his retirement. He is so tall and it is a little hard for him to play well in golf.

The helpful advice from the 30,000 people in his on-course entourage. His sad little blooper shot when he finally makes contact. It’s the first golf video I’ve ever wanted to hug.

I hope his friend’s advice was, “try playing a sport where the ball isn’t so close to the ground”.

Bill Murray Tried To Steal The Ryder Cup

Written by Brandon Stroud / 09.26.12

The UPROXX Network is made up of a variety of sites covering different topics with a range of points of view, but the one thing we all agree on is that Bill Murray is f**king awesome and should be humanity’s representative for everything. We’ve decided he should be elected to every Hall Of Fame, celebrated for his contributions to Major League Baseball’s neediest teams, asked to properly represent America’s Presidents and be made an ambassador to Asian nations.

Because no Bill Murray-related sports moment should go uncovered by this website, here’s a recap of The Murricane’s appearance in the 2012 Ryder Cup Captains & Celebrity Scramble at Medinah Country Golf Club on Tuesday. It began with him teaming up with golfer Tom Lehman and The Guy With The Hair from N*Sync, and ended with him leading the crowd in AMERICA chants and trying to pocket the cup.

Murray teamed up with Justin Timberlake, Dick Stockton and Tom Lehman to finish tied for second at 6-under par. The winning team consisted of Michael Phelps, George Lopez, Hal Sutton and Lanny Wadkins, who finished at 9-under.

I’m not happy knowing George Lopez can be better at something than Bill Murray, but it is what it is.

Video of Bill’s shenanigans is after the jump, followed by a clip of some of the other sports celebrities in attendance, including Phelps, Scottie Pippen and William ‘The Refrigerator’ Perry. And George Lopez.

Justin Bieber: Golf Boy

Written by Brandon Stroud / 09.29.11

Like everywhere else on the Internet, we end up talking about Justin Bieber way more than we should. Our job is to 1) cover what happens in the world of sports, and 2) bring as many people from the Internet to our site as possible. Unfortunately for us, Justin Bieber is what millions of people online love and he won’t stop injecting himself into professional sports. He’s rented out the Staples Center to show his girlfriend a movie, he’s defeated NBA players in a game of basketball, been loved by Erin Andrews, been a Bowling Hall Of Fame nominee and been covered by Cam Newton.

Now, he’s golfing with “Golf Boy” Bubba Watson, for whatever reason, and he’s doing it exactly like you think he would: at five feet tall in a hot pink polo shirt. But hey, his swing isn’t bad. Courtesy of @bubbawatson, by way of Sportress Of Blogitude:

Chips Don’t Lie

Written by Brandon Stroud / 08.08.11

Shakira could be the world’s most talented and likeable lady. Sure, I think she sings kinda like a washing machine — on Progressive Boink we once described her as having the “ability to sing like both a Latina schoolgirl and Homsar in the same verse” — but her lower body operates on some amazing blades and pulleys system the average person can’t comprehend. She just arches her back and takes a step forward and suddenly she’s gyrating so ridiculously you could use her ass like the f**king Time Tunnel.

What I’m getting at is that Shakira works on a different level than most, so of course she’s good at golf. Here’s a brief synopsis from our pals at Devil Ball Golf, who manage to say what we’re all thinking:

There’s an awful lot of padding in this video (edit, people! edit!) and you’ve got to be a serious Shakira fan (or stalker) to sit through this whole thing. But give it 30 seconds. I can guarantee you this: any pro golfer who does the Shakira hip-dance after they hole a long putt gets immortalized here on Devil Ball, guaranteed.

All the video needs is Wyclef Jean showing up somewhere in the background to yell “one time one time” and take 50% credit for the golf. Alternate joke: If Shakira is this good at golf, I’m guessing Paulina Rubio can’t Putt-Putt for sh*t.

Joe Sakic Sinks Hole-In-One: Wait, Did I Forget How Sports Work

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.18.11

Joe Sakic sunk a hole-in-one at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, where a perfect shot on the 17th earned him a $1 million bonus from the tournament sponsor. Half of it going to Sakic and half goes to Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation. It’s at this point I’d like to remind you that Sakic is not a golfer: he is a hockey player, so take in this news like you might if I showed you video of Derek Jeter dunking over a car. Charles Barkley just won the Daytona 500, everybody, here’s a photo gallery.

From USA Today:

“That’s a shot you never imagine hitting,” said Sakic, who won two Stanley Cups with the Colorado Avalanche. “I’ve never even been close before. If you’re going to do it, why not here?”

Take a look.

The best part is his reaction, which starts off as literally nothing and devolves (evolves?) into high-fives and a Cal Ripken Jr. victory lap. I like to think my reaction would be similar, except with more fist pumping and me yelling “BOOM”.
