Just What 2013 Needed: A ‘Call Me Maybe’ Parody

Written by Brandon Stroud / 01.18.13

Call Me Maybe Call Me Brady Ravensare you f**king kidding me

If you needed a reason to hate the Baltimore Ravens, here is a group of their fans becoming an accessory to a goddamn Carly Rae Jepsen ‘Call Me Maybe’ cover in 2013. 2013. They went with ‘Bring On Brady’ as their hook, too, which apes the “Brady sounds like maybe, let’s do a Call Me Maybe parody about him” joke somebody made eight months ago.

Was the decision-making process just flipping a coin? Heads, we do ‘Call Me Maybe.’ Tails, we do ‘Gangnam Style.’ Come on, you guys have so much to work with. I wrote like 80% of a Ray Lewis ‘Murder Was The Case’ parody in my head while anger-typing this. It’s not that hard.

Bonus points for the guy in the background being weirdly possessive and flattering himself at the same time, though:

Since When Does Ben Roethlisberger Ask Girls To Call Him?

Written by Brandon Stroud / 08.21.12

pittsburgh-steelers-call-me-maybeIt’s been a busy off-season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger spoke out in favor of Tim Tebow, Wiz Khalifa offered up a lazy remix as an inspiring new anthem and most of the team got murdered by Bane. No, not Bane Kiffin, the regular one. It’s also been a busy off-season for With Leather, muddling through nearly three months of constant, incessant ‘Call Me Maybe’ covers.

Now those off-seasons come together with the Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp Carly Rae Jepson tribute video you’ve been waiting for. It’s mostly just training camp highlights (and some Make-A-Wish stuff) with Steelers players holding telephones sprinkled throughout, but YouTube is convinced that this is certifiable proof that Pittsburgh is horrible at football and will never win a game again.

Example:

So what do you think? Is this video a sports curse for gay jerks, or football players briefly opening a port-a-potty door for a team PR guy and using the remaining 99.9999% of their time to practice? The first one sounds way more reasonable.

More Cheerleaders Are Giving You Their Phone Number

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.13.12

The extremely British and progressively less and less attractive Crystal Palace Cheerleaders have decided to debut their own ‘Call Me Maybe’ cover. In July. People are still doing this. I guess it’s hard to get good Internet reception in a crystal palace. (via Diehard Sport)

I’m A Shirtless Gopher, So Call Me Maybe

Written by Brandon Stroud / 07.12.12

big_ten_mascots_call_me_maybe

The summer of unnecessary goddamn sports-related Carly Rae Jepsen ‘Call Me Maybe’ covers continues. First it was eight million views for a Harvard Crimson baseball team lip sync video, then it was literally everyone else on the planet, from the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders (good) to local Oklahoma bands who are excited about the NBA Finals (not so good).

You’d think that would’ve died down by now, but nope, between every update about whether or not Dwight Howard has heard of the Indiana Pacers (he hasn’t) there’s a ‘Call Me Maybe’ parody. Today’s effort, relevant to my interests, is from the Big Ten conference mascots. Highlights include Sparty chasing tail, Brutus Buckeye’s arbitrary hip-hop dancing and Herbie Husker hanging out with the four attractive women in Nebraska. At no point does Carly Rae Jepsen stop being the most grating f**king thing of all time.

Don’t let that dissuade you from watching, though. Full video (with a hat tip to Kegs n Eggs) is below.

“Just Call Him KD”… Sigh.

Written by Ashley Burns / 06.13.12

Kevin Pritchard may be the new general manager of the Indiana Pacers, but he’ll always be “that dipsh*t who drafted Greg Oden over Kevin Durant” to me. I bring this up because as I was watching Durant absolutely destroy the Miami Heat in the 4th quarter of last night’s NBA Finals Game 1, I could only wonder, “Seriously, how big of a dick does Pritchard feel like?”

It goes without saying that Durant is an absolute god in Oklahoma City, because he’s just f*cking incredible. So it makes sense that a band wrote a song about him. Too bad that song is a parody of “Call Me Maybe”. And it’s too bad that the song includes this lyric:

“I’m so glad we drafted Fish”

I may have actually praised this effort if this ridiculously inept and ignorant line had never been written, but it was so I won’t. Alas, it has been written, recorded, and YouTubed, so it’s a viral sensation now. All I can do is include this GIF to make me forget it…

Music video after the jump, as well as the highlights of Durant going what I believe the kids call HAM.

So We’ve Changed Our Minds About Those ‘Call Me Maybe’ Covers

Written by Brandon Stroud / 06.06.12

dolphins_cheerleaders_call_me_maybe

Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ is the song of the summer. In 2012, “song of the summer” means it gets radio play for a couple of weeks in May, people like it, the Internet finds out about it and covers and parodies it into submission until you’d rather put the side of your head in a blender than hear it again. So far we’ve suffered through Mark Zuckerberg’s New England Patriots tribute ‘Call Me Brady’ and over a dozen college and semi-pro sports teams doing “viral videos” of the song in their buses, and that’s only the beginning. It is agony.

So it’s with an extra spring in my step that I present this video (with a h/t to Diehard Sport) of Miami Dolphins cheerleaders elaborately lip-syncing ‘Call Me Maybe’ for their 2013 calendar shoot. It temporarily saves the movement and proves an important point — if you do it it’s tired, but if a scantily-clad fitness model does it it’s gold.

Okay, maybe it isn’t gold, but it’s something to watch. Video is below. Watch it on mute if you have to.
