With Leather Live Discussion: UFC 160

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.25.13

For this UFC 160 Live Discussion, which has been hailed by Queen Elizabeth II as the second-best UFC PPV live discussion on the Internet behind her own, I decided to lead with the Taylor Swift/Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva mashup because it’s a lot better than the other video than I’ve included, as it features significantly less blood pouring out of Silva’s face holes.

But here we are, on the eve of UFC 160 and the rematch of Silva and UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. Silva is coming off the surprising statement knockout victory over Alistair Overeem at UFC 156 back in February, while Velasquez is riding high following his rematch victory for the title against Junior dos Santos at UFC 155. Of course, it’s worth noting that Velsaquez’s last three fights included two against dos Santos and one against Silva – which wasn’t a title match – so his training has been very specific.

And in case you don’t quite recall how that last match against Silva ended, well, make sure you’re not eating…

Cain Velasquez Is The Arnold Schwarzenegger Of UFC Commentary

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.23.13

Via YouTube:

Heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez mic’d up Octagon-side for UFC 156 as his next opponent is determined. See Velasquez’s live reaction as he watches Bigfoot Silva pull off an epic knockout against Alistair Overeem. Velasquez faces Bigfoot in the rematch at UFC 160 this Saturday, May 25th.

What the description doesn’t point out is that Cain Velasquez’s live reaction is almost no reaction, and his cold, obvious explanations of what you’re watching reminded me way too much of Arnold Schwarzenegger doing commentary on Total Recall. Just replace “this is me on the screen here” with “Overeem threw 2 to 3 punches.”

I guess I can’t blame him too much. This is his job, after all. But hey, if he wasn’t enthusiastic about Bigfoot Silva’s win here, I’d like to see him run commentary on this clip of Bigfoot trying to fit into a normal sized man’s helmet and do laps around a racetrack in Sao Paulo.

Let’s Relive Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva’s Victory Over Alistair Overeem At UFC 156, Shall We?

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.04.13

“I’m going to f*cking destroy him. That’s what I’m going to do.”

Those were the words that Alistair Overeem said to UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani regarding Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva prior to their fight at this past Saturday’s UFC 156 event in Las Vegas. To add to that sentiment, when Silva warned Overeem during their stare-down that he “better start showing respect”, Overeem responded, “I’m going to f*cking destroy you.” Needless to say, these guys didn’t like each other before Saturday and they probably still don’t like each other now.

With Leather Live Discussion: UFC 156

Written by Ashley Burns / 02.02.13

Ever since Georges St-Pierre made his triumphant return to re-capture his UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 154, we’ve been hearing this one phrase thrown around ad nauseum. That phrase? “Superfight”. That’s because Anderson Silva was on hand at UFC 154 in Toronto to watch St-Pierre knock the rust off, and a lot of us believed that was some sort of foreshadowing. Of course, it wasn’t, as Silva was in Toronto filming a movie, so he just attended the fight for the fun of it, but then UFC President Dana White said, “F*ck a bunch of that” and he swore to all of us that we were going to get a Silva and St-Pierre superfight in 2013.

In the meantime, we’re being treated to another superfight in tonight’s UFC 156 PPV event live from Las Vegas. In the main event, Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo is taking on Frankie Edgar in what many pundits and prognosticators are calling one hell of a matchup. Edgar, of course, has been one of the best lightweight fighters the UFC has ever seen, but back in August, after losing to Benson Henderson for a second time, he raised plenty of eyebrows when he declared that he’d be shedding some weight to drop down to the featherweight division. Thus, the superfight – a former UFC Lightweight Champion taking on the baddest Featherweight Champion of all-time.

Elsewhere, Alistair Overeem is making his return to UFC action now that his blood doesn’t match that of a rhinoceros, and he’ll be taking on Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, while 33-year old Rashad Evans will face off against 36-year old Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a battle of the old farts (writes the chubby 33-year old). You can check out the rest of tonight’s UFC 156 fight card after the jump, and as always you can check out our own Lobster Mobster’s breakdown. Prelims start at 8 PM ET on FX and the big fights hit the PPV channels at 10 PM ET. Other than that, CHAT TIME.

Sgt. Slaughter Plays Bud Guitar, Defeats Monster Truck, Is 1980s Awesome

Written by Brandon Stroud / 09.22.11

Every now and then a pro wrestling-related clip nobody should’ve seen pops up on the Internet and decides to go viral. Today’s clip, courtesy of our friends at Buzzfeed, is quite possibly the most masculine thing ever recorded and a living interpretation of every Chuck Norris joke you’ve heard as performed by monster trucks, electric guitar and Sgt. Slaughter. To catch you up to speed:

Following his third tour of duty in Vietnam, Sgt. Slaughter retired from service to pursue his life long dream of wrestling. After gaining the world championship belt and super stardom, the Sgt then moved onto rock star, monster truck tug of war champion and GI JOE. They just don’t make them like they used to.

Highlights of the video include the finest of 1980s girls in Bud trucker hats, the tape wearing out at the part where a lady starts jacking off an exhaust pipe, Sarge’s “battle battalion” not looking too different from the Village People and a bunch of monster truck and funny car drivers calmly lip syncing parts they should be screaming. In case you were wondering, Sgt. Slaughter did all those things in the blockquote but the guy who played him didn’t — he actually started off as a flamboyant character in the mid-70s, and if you need confirmation of military time not served, listen to Jesse “The Body” Ventura (Navy UDT veteran and former Navy SEAL) talk about it.

Regardless, the fictional version of the army guy had a pretty amazing life up until the Gulf War, when he decided to side with Iraq. Man, Sgt. Slaughter was always kind of a lying jerk, wasn’t he? Those Joe PSAs are meaningless now. I’m gonna go put my fingers in the light sockets no matter what Flint tells me. Ah well, at least you can’t take “monster truck tug of war champion” away from him.
