Here’s A Portrait Of Shaquille O’Neal And Hulk Hogan In New York City On 9/11

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.24.12

Yesterday, while discussing Shaquille O’Neal’s foray into the comedy biz with The Comedy Shaq Network, I included a video of a recent sketch that Shaq taped with comedian Godfrey and sex tape superstar Hulk Hogan. It turns out that video was recorded backstage during a TNA Impact event, and that makes perfect sense, because Shaq and Hogan have a long history of friendship that dates back to the 1994 Bash at the Beach, held at the Orlando Arena when O’Neal was with the Orlando Magic.

Shaq was on hand to present the WCW Championship belt to the winner of the main event match between Hogan and Ric Flair, and if you have never seen that match or don’t remember it, here’s a quick recap – Flair strutted, Hogan did that hand twirl thing, Flair got slapped in the chest and fell down, Hogan was seemingly defeated but he got back up and suddenly became invincible, and then Hogan won because he has the most powerful right leg in the universe.

But the biggest thing that came from this event (aside from Steve Austin retaining his U.S. Championship, of course) was the friendship of Hogan and O’Neal, which led to an amusing promo that people still bring up now and again because of its “Hey, remember this?” charm.

‘Athlete Objects’ Combines Our Love Of Puns, Cartoons And Athletes

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.23.12

One of the first classes that we should teach children in middle school is how to properly use search engines on the Internet. This goes not only for your basics like Google and Bing, but also for social media sites, because holy crap there are some really messed up people on Tumblr. The moral of this random opening is that sometimes searching “Food” will bring you to bisexual cyborgs flinging pudding at naked old people and sometimes it will bring you to someone’s creative artwork. Fortunately, we’re dealing with the latter today.

Falling into our long history of appreciation for zany sports fan art, I recently discovered designer Jesse Hora’s simply-but-aptly-titled “Athlete Objects”, which depicts some of our favorite professional athletes (mostly NBA players) as everyday items that represent their names. Again, even more than I love fan art, I love simple fan art, and with respect to Nancy Grace Monster Jams and the National Foodball League, Hora’s work may be my new favorite.

Here’s A Painting Of Larry Bird And Skeletor

Written by Ashley Burns / 10.09.12

The Tumblr page The NBA Dribbled Out posted the above image that recently showed up in Reddit’s NBA thread, so I will let the author of that site describe it:

Someone uploaded this picture of a painting, which they claimed to have found in an ice cream parlor. In case you were wondering, that’s Larry Bird enjoying a milkshake while sitting with Skeletor, the arch-enemy of He-Man. Skeletor appears to be enjoying a cigarette instead of a delicious lactose treat. I love milkshakes and Larry Bird, but I also enjoy a smoke every now and then, so this picture was begging to be blogged about.

This painting is incredible, so I want to break this down into many talking points.

Alex Rodriguez Is An Admirer Of Art And Terrible Photoshops

Written by Ashley Burns / 09.20.12

With 14 games remaining, the New York Yankees are clinging to a shocking half-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East race. Granted, if the Yankees lose that lead, they’ll still be sitting comfortable in a Wild Card spot, but even with a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays today, New York would still be tied for first, as the O’s have the day off. Bunch of lazy jerks.

On Monday, though, the Yankees had the day off, which allowed superstar third baseman Alex Rodriguez a little “me” time to hit the town and take in some culture. Specifically, A-Rod was hitting up the museums to eye f*ck some art, as he posted the above image to his Facebook account on Monday.

What a great day off, admired lots of great art… Including this gorgeous Basquiat!

The work in question that Rodriguez was admiring is “Pegasus”, a 1987 work by famed graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was, of course, one of Andy Warhol’s protégés and close friends. He was also the subject of the 1996 film, Basquiat, starring Jeffrey Wright. I often told my friends that I loved that movie, but I was a stupid kid and didn’t actually understand it.

I bet A-Rod gets Basquiat, because he’s always been a classy son-of-a-gun, and to further prove that point, I actually followed him around as he admired plenty of other things on his day off. How exactly did I manage to follow him without being noticed and, as some people might point out, that I “wasn’t even in New York at any point in my life”? I learned from the master himself.

After the jump, check out the amazing sites that A-Rod spent his Monday off checking out. Also, I think the guy might be kind of a pervert.

Remember To Aim To The Left Of Hitler’s Hole

Written by Ashley Burns / 08.16.12

Last Saturday, the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool, Lancashire (United Kingdom) launched a new exhibit, “Doug Fishbone and Friends Adventureland Golf”, featuring 9 holes of miniature golf designed by some of the UK’s greatest artists. The event runs through October 6 – if I understand the way those crazy Brits list their date numbers – and it’s open for the public to stop in and play a round. (In fact, any of you motherland With Leatherians stop in and get pictures, you’ll will get a free shirt.)

But that’s only if you get pictures with the above hole, designed to look like – can you guess? Anyone? That’s right, it’s Adolph Hitler, who is famous for leading Nazi Germany and stapling his testicles to patio furniture. Before you get all offended, though, know that there’s a very good reason behind this artistic choice.

Jake and Dinos Chapman, and Doug Fishbone have created replicas of two dictators for the course. The Chapman’s saluting Adolf Hitler places the powerful image of the Nazi regime within the context of holiday fun and in doing so makes reference to the British wartime spirit of making humour at the fuehrer’s expense. Doug Fishbone has recreated the toppling of the massive Saddam Hussein statue in Firdos Square, Baghdad, in 2003, an image that came to define the Iraqi war.

Nothing says picking on historical villains like making them obstacles in miniature golf. According to the Blackpool Gazette – with the best headline possible – if you get a hole-in-one on Hitler, he raises his arm. If you ace the Saddam Hussein hole, his statue falls over. I think this could be my favorite miniature golf course of all-time. Sorry, Congo River. :(

Although, I would have liked to have seen a more elaborate Hitler hole with Benito Mussolini perhaps biting the Führer’s genitalia. I heard that actually happened and it resulted in Hitler being impotent. Seriously, I learned that in elementary school, when education used to mean something in this country.

The Best Of Brooklyn Decker On DeviantArt

Written by Brandon Stroud / 08.03.12

While gathering material for last week’s Best Of Kate Upton On DeviantArt gallery, I noticed a lot of mislabeled pictures of Kate as “Brooklyn Decker”, because people seriously cannot tell them apart. I investigated further and discovered that an Adam Sandler movie and a role as BATTLESHIP LADY in Battleship earn you just as many fans and weird onlookers as a GQ popsicle cover.

So in the spirit of “what, why does this exist”, here’s part two in our series exploring the best portraits and worst Jungle Book-related bondage photoshoppery of DeviantArt.com. If you missed last week’s piece, DeviantArt is a place where people get together to tell each other that the pictures they cobbled together of naked manga characters kickboxing in the jungle are “so creative”.

What you’ll find inside: A few good drawings, a few bad ones, Brooklyn Decker as a giantess (and a clown) and a thing where someone made it look like Brooklyn was giving herself a wedgie. Tread lightly, folks.
