CHEERING FOR THE DIAMONDBACKS IS FUN

Who knew hookers had so much blood?

This is Nathan Keating, a D-Backs fan who is as faithful as he is persistent as he is drunk.

A drunk Keating (painted from the waist up in the home team's color, Sedona red) was tossed from the stadium for cursing at other fans during the D-Backs 3-1 win over the Cubs on Saturday. After initially leaving the ballpark without being charged, Keating, 22, returned to the stadium grounds where he was arrested [and] charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

He was also charged with one count of "caring about the D-Backs enough to paint your torso," which carries a penalty of lifelong ridicule.

(Wait a second, Nate Keating?  Isn't he the kicker for the Chargers?)

D-BACKS PITCHER IS GOOD AT HITTING

Written by Matt / 08.19.07

The Arizona Diamondbacks' pitching mound runneth over.  Brandon Webb extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 42 on Friday, and rookie Micah Owings improved his record to 6-6 with a solid 7-inning performance and went 4-5 at the plate against the Braves in Atlanta last night.  Owings, a Georgia native, did his best Babe Ruth impression by making 2 of his hits mammoth home runs:

"It was a nice little homecoming for him," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We knew he could pitch, and we knew he could hit a little, too. Without him tonight, it's a different game."

Whoa Melvin, please curb your enthusiasm.  It's just 1 game in 162.  Let's see how Bobby Cox handled the loss:

"We knew he was a good hitter. Not just a good hitter, but a good hitter with power," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said.

Wow, you'd think a guy who has managed as long as Bobby wouldn't get this upset when his team loses.  Clearly, he and Melvin were at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum.  Anyway, I hope Owings celebrated in true Ruthian fashion with the 'sporting girls' on Peachtree Street after his big night.  That would make reading baseball managers' stock answers to baseball writers' unoriginal questions almost worth it.  Almost. -KD

THE DIAMONDBACKS ARE HOT

Written by Matt / 08.16.07

Some guy leaps to make a play as some guy slides

I don't think I've noticed the Arizona Diamondbacks all year.  As far as I can tell, the NL West is comprised of Barry Bonds at-bats and a race between the Padres and Dodgers.  But sometime during my prolonged period of not caring, the D-Backs won 18 of their last 23 games and assumed first place in the division.

Last night Arizona kept up the pace, beating Florida 9-6 in front of a wild south Florida crowd of over 11,000.  Some guy I've never heard of earned the win, bolstered by three hits apiece from three guys I've never heard of and a two-run homer from another guy I've never heard of.  Randy Johnson, who I've actually heard of, did not pitch.

Other MLB scores: Cardinals power their way past Brewers, eye the mythical .500 mark of World Series champions… Fausto Carmona earns 14th win as Tribe earn share of AL Central lead with 5-2 win over Tigers… Shelley Duncan ties game in bottom of the ninth with two-out, three-run homer, but Yankees fall to Orioles in 10… Bobby Cox gets back-to-back ejections as Braves win 6-3 despite Tim Hudson's balks.
