Superfight Super News: Anderson Silva Could Fight Jon Jones… Depending On That Toe

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.24.13

After we watched Jon Jones’ big toe roll in a direction that toes aren’t supposed to roll during his first round victory against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159, we figured that it would be a while before he fought again, because it had been reported that he had suffered a serious fracture. Then Jones finished his post-fight pizza and he was all, “It’s not broken, just dislocated” and he claimed that he’d be fighting again in six-to-eight weeks.

Well, if that is true and he is indeed fully recovered within the next month or so, then he may have a special seat at ringside when Anderson Silva faces Chris Weidman, the No. 1 contender to his UFC Middleweight belt, at UFC 162 on July 6. That’s because Dana White has gone from teasing a Georges St-Pierre/Silva superfight to a Jones/Silva superfight.

UFC Round-Up: UFC On FX 8 Results And The Bleak Future Of UFC 161

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.20.13

In case you were unable to join us for Saturday’s free fights at UFC on FX 8, you missed business as usual in the UFC’s Middleweight division. Vitor Belfort defeated former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold via a spin-kick knockout in the first round, meaning that all signs kind of point to a Silva-Belfort II event in the near future – that is, if Chris Weidman doesn’t pull off an upset when he faces Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 162.

As for the rest of the event, you can read the results after the jump, as well as some other big UFC news and headlines of the day, including whether or not that Silva-Belfort rematch will actually happen.

Wanderlei Silva Wants To Drink Chael Sonnen’s Blood

Written by Brandon Stroud / 05.15.13

Wanderlei Silva Chael Sonnen blood

Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen have a lovely history. A couple of years ago, Silva gave Sonnen calm, constructive feedback about how the positives of fight promotion don’t outweigh the need to respect your opponents. Sonnen meekly accepted it with a “thank you.” Years later, SUDDENLY~, Sonnen thought Silva’s feedback was a “dirtbag move,” claiming he didn’t know what Silva was actually saying and vowing to “straighten this thing out.” Because, you know, as we’ve seen, Chael Sonnen’s trash talk always leads to something positive for him.

Anyway, word of the call-out has gotten back to Silva, and he responded with a conversational knockout blow on Fuel’s ‘UFC Tonight’:

“Jon Jones and Anderson Silva have been too nice to Chael. I want to suck his blood. I want to smell it. Not just fight – I want to hurt him. Chael is a joke, man. He’s going to be second forever. He’s never going to be first,” Silva said to Ariel Helwani. (via Cagewriter)

Ouch. That’s certainly a more valid and damning criticism than Sonnen’s “he uploaded a video to YouTube without my approval” angle. And check out that swift escalation from “you’re a dirtbag” to “I’m going to drain you of your blood with my mouth and also smell it because I hate you and your life is meaningless.”

Good luck with that, Chael. Maybe you should try calling out Bob Sapp?

More Like Pooper Fight: Georges St-Pierre Probably Won’t Ever Face Anderson Silva

Written by Ashley Burns / 04.26.13

Remember when Dana White was extra bald and extra shouty as he yelled something along the lines of, “The people want a superfight between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre and I’m going to make sure it happens!” Well, it seems that I still have a better chance of providing my middle school with that Coke machine in the cafeteria that I promised all those years ago than the UFC President does of making this dream match come true.

GSP was a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience earlier this week, and among other things he discussed the possibility of making this superfight happen, and he basically admitted that there’s the slimmest of chances if any.

Four Days Before UFC 159 And Suddenly Chael Sonnen Is Jon Jones’ Biggest Fan

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.23.13

Chael Sonnen has a big fight coming up on the 27th at UFC 159 against UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. About now is when you’d expect The American Gangster to go Full Chael Sonnen and start cutting promos about how he could beat Bones with both arms and a leg tied behind his back. About how if the fight goes longer than a round he’ll take off his fightshorts and eat them in front of New Jersey. After all, when Jones refused to fight him on short notice at UFC 151, Sonnen called Bones every name he could think of, from “bratty, entitled kid” to “chicken shhhh.”

Sorry. You aren’t getting that this time. This time, they’re BFF.

To get you hyped for UFC 159, here’s a paragraph of transcript from the pre-fight conference call featuring Chael kissing Jon’s ass so hard he might force a ref stoppage. Either that, or Sonnen’s trying to work in Chuck Norris jokes facetiously.

“As great as Jon is, I don’t think he understands how good he is. For him to pay tribute to Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali earlier was a very nice thing for him to do. The reality is, Jon Jones could beat up Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in the same day. And when he says he wants to be the best ever – Jon, news flash, buddy – you are the best. As far as tying Tito Ortiz, yeah maybe he had a couple more wins, but he hasn’t had the competition that you’ve faced. He’s the world champion, he’s the best in the weight class and he’s the best the weight class has ever seen.”

That’s all well and good, but someone made the mistake of asking Chael to compare Bones and Anderson Silva.

Remember back at UFC 117, when Chael Sonnen faced Anderson Silva, submitted to a triangle armbar and lost the fight? Remember the rematch at UFC 148, when Chael went for a spinning backfist and fell on his ass, allowing Silva to just kinda stiff arm him against the cage and punch him in the head until the ref stopped the fight? Chael Sonnen doesn’t!

Finally, Somebody Compared Anderson Silva To The Matrix

Written by Brandon Stroud / 04.17.13

Yes, apparently!

Anderson Silva tweeted out a link to a video made last month wherein someone compares Silva’s old fight footage to clips from The Matrix. It’s not the most timely thing in the world, but it’s certainly believable that Anderson Silva is a CPU construct that just shows up to correct glitches and remove programs in the world of MMA.

Here’s the video, featuring the still hilariously named MOTHER OF ALL BATTLES on the soundtrack. Thankfully there is not 10 minutes of Silva having weird sex during a rave included anywhere.
