They Sold the Tapout Founder’s Ashes. Or Did They???

Written by Vince Mancini / 05.13.11

Greetings, folks, Vince Mancini from FilmDrunk here to bring you this story tangentially-related to sweaty man-hugging, which is of course a passion of mine.  The story concerns Tapout founder Charles “Mask” Lewis (center), who died in a car crash in March 2009.  I’ve always had mixed feelings about Tapout, given that they’ve long helped sponsor fighters who wouldn’t have been able to make a living otherwise (which is great), but also promote the kind of cheesy, bro-y posturing that makes MMA look like pro wrestling, or an energy-drink commercial (not so great).   In any case, Mask’s sister Carla recently filed a lawsuit, alleging that Mask’s partners in Tapout, the delightfully-named “Skyscrape” and “Punkass”, sold and/or gave away Mask’s cremated remains.  Here’s TMZ‘s first report on the situation:

After Mask’s death, Carla claims she was approached by the co-founders of TapouT — men calling themselves Skyscrape and Punkass — who wanted to “borrow” Mask’s ashes and urn for a public memorial service.

Here’s where things get CRAZY — Carla says when she arrived to the memorial service, she noticed “various booths and tables” set up around the cathedral … one of which contained, “a large shoebox-size box containing several miniature vials that were on display.”

Carla says the vendor informed her, “each of the vials contained a small amount of the cremated remains of Mask, and were reserved for, and to be given to, ‘special people’ whose names were on a printed list.”

Carla believes somewhere between 50 to 100 vials were either “sold, given away, donated or otherwise distributed to several unknown persons.”

“I had no idea a guy in an afro wig and face paint named ‘Skyscrape’ could act so irresponsibly!” she added. Skyscrape and Punkass, meanwhile, deny ever selling the ashes.  Meanwhile, the OC Register has a picture of the room in TapouT’s headquarter’s where Mask’s ashes had been stored, and man, get a load of this sh*t:

UFC 91: CAP’N AMERICA VS. CAP’N PENIS TAT

Written by Vince Mancini / 11.14.08

The other day a friend of mine asked, “How is Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar the biggest fight in UFC history?”

My answer: in terms of talent it’s not, it’s just really easy to hype. You’ve got your 45-year-old hall of famer who everyone loves vs. a freakish homophobic redneck meathead with a big cock tattooed on his chest who everyone hates.  Guys like Brock Lesnar are pretty much the reason martial arts were invented in the first place. It’s basically good vs. evil.  And even if you don’t buy into all that, who cares?  It’s still a fight.  I’d watch two hoboes fight (though I recommend attaching razor blades to their forelimbs to make it more interesting).

It all goes down tomorrow at 10 ET, live from Las Vegas, and if you don’t want to spring for the PPV, there’s a list of bars and sportsbars that will be showing it here.  I’m Vince from FilmDrunk, and I’ve got your full run down of the fights after the jump (clothing optional).

PUNCHING PEOPLE IN THE FACE IS MANLY

Written by Vince Mancini / 08.08.08

He hates it when you do that

Howdy, homo-erotic violence lovers.  Vince from FilmDrunk here with your UFC 87 preview.  The action starts at 10 pm Eastern on Saturday, and if you don’t want to pay for the pay-per-view, here’s a list of bars where you can watch it with a bunch of other drunken assholes all hopped up on chicken wings.

Headlining, 170 lbs: George St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch
GSP is the favorite, both in Vegas (-350) and of Mandy Moore, but Fitch is undefeated in the octagon.  He’s primarily a wrestler, but holds victories over a veritable buttload of solid Welterweight talent including Diego Sanchez, Thiago Alves, and Josh Burkman.  But he’s still fighting GSP.  I mean, I’d fuck the guy.  Wait, what?  What I meant was that I really liked it when he kicked that guy in the face!  Grr, Metallica!

265 lbs: Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring
This one should be barn-burner because both these guys are huge, and both of them really, really hate fags (Lesnar here, Herring here).  Seriously though, Lesnar is an angry freak of nature who walks around at like 290 pounds, and whose only loss was to Frank Mir, who’s something of a submission prodigy, which Heath Herring is not.  Then again, this is Lesnar’s third fight ever, while Herring has fought damn near everybody.  (And just so we're clear, I was totally serious about both these guys hating gay people).

155 lbs.: Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta
The most interesting thing about this one is that Roger Huerta has one fight left on his contract and has been mouthing off in the press about how he deserves more money.  Meanwhile Dana White, who's notoriously gangsta about this kinda crap says Huerta is a prima donna and isn't getting shit unless he beats Florian.  They're both well-rounded and fun to watch and I'm not heavily invested either way.  The important thing is that someone gets hurt.

155 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan vs. Rob Emerson
Gamburyan is underrated – he lost The Ultimate Fighter Finale to Nate Diaz who he was clearly beating until he dislocated his shoulder, and has won each of his two fights since in less than 2:00. Meanwhile, Emerson "Was arrested in 2000 for his membership in the Lords of South County, a gang of Orange County rich kids who liked to assault innocent people for fun. Arrested again in 2006 after a dustup at a bar, and pled guilty to two counts of battery." (reference).  That all may be an exaggeration, but simply being from Orange County is more than enough for me to root against him.  I'm a simple man. A simple, hate-filled man.

185 lbs.: Demian Maia vs. Jason McDonald
Uh, who? <research>  Jason McDonald is a Canadian ginger.  Demian Maia is a Brazilian.  I'm sure that won't have any effect on the outcome of the fight, but I figure everyone picks a favorite based on race, right?  Guys?

UFC 85: JESUS DIDN’T TAP

Written by Vince Mancini / 06.09.08

The headbutt-to-the-thigh was one of many questionable strategies employed by Hughes

Hello, everyone.  Vince aka Lance Martini of FilmDrunk here to talk MMA news again.

Yes, Thiago Alves beat Matt Hughes' ass.  Yes Mirgliotta shouldn't have stopped the Vera fight.  Yes that Matt Wiman fight was one of the best in history.  Yes Michael Bisping is a badass.  Yes Mike Swick landed a sweet headkick (a "head swick", you might say…).  Yes Jason Lambert should probably start covering his face.  These are the top stories coming out of UFC 85.  But in my mind, there are really only two things to report:

NATE MARQUARDT POWERBOMBED MY HEART
UFC is like the opposite of bikini waxes in that I always root against the Brazilian.  As you can see by this gif animation (or this still), Marquardt pulled off the most badass move in UFC history late in the third round against Thales Leites.  I felt as if I'd waited my whole life prior to that moment before finally discovering the reason I have eyes.  Oh, and then he got totally jobbed in the decision.  Marquardt clearly won the last two rounds, which would make the score 30-27 or 29-28 for Marquardt, depending on how you score the first.  Eeeexcept, Marquardt got two points deducted (that's right, two, never seen that happen before) for an elbow to the back of the head, making the score 28-27 for Leites on two cards and 28-27 for Marquardt on the other.  I'm pretty sure the Texas piledriver should be worth at least four extra points. …Oh, it's illegal you say?  …Carry on then.

JESUS WOULDN'T TAP
In his post-win interview, Thiago Alves donned a shirt that said "Jesus Didn't Tap" (and right next to an ad for CondomDepot! So. Many. Jokes.  …Must. Resist. Mocking. Savior…).  It didn't include the helpful visual like this (grr, crucifix position!) but it did tastefully use a cross for the "T".  No word on whether the shirt was officially a reference to Jesus Christ, or to Jesus "Chingasos" Ramos, the Mexican Judo sensation of Oaxaca.  (Full results after the jump)

Thiago Alves defeats Matt Hughes via TKO (Strikes) Round 2
Micheal Bisping defeats Jason Day via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
Mike Swick defeats Marcus Davis via Unanimous Decision
Thales Leites defeats Nate Marquardt via Split Decision
Frabrico Werdum defeats Brandon Vera via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
Martin Kampmann defeats Jorge Rivera via submission (guillotine choke) in round one
Matt Wiman defeats Thiago Tavares via knockout in round two
Kevin Burns defeats Roan Carneiro via submission in round two
Luis Arthur Cane defeats Jason Lambert via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Paul Taylor defeats Jess Liaudin via split decision
Antoni Hardonk defeats Eddie Sanchez via technical knockout (strikes) in round two

You can read a whole nice recap here.
