EA Sports Finally Has A UFC Video Game Coming Out And It Will Be Incredible

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.21.13

Earlier this year, video game developer THQ Inc. – which was responsible for one of my favorite video games of all-time, WCW/nWo Revenge – auctioned off most of its studios and properties as part of its declaration of bankruptcy, but one of the first properties to go long before that included the rights to the UFC video game. UFC Undisputed 2009 and 2010 had been rather poorly received by fans, so it should have made them all very happy when EA Sports picked up the rights in June 2012.

Back in March, it was revealed that a UFC video game is still at least a year off, but it seems that it will be well worth the wait. Yesterday, the EA Sports UFC Facebook page teased us with a big news announcement today, and that just so happened to coincide with the XBox announcement of the “ultimate, all-in-one home entertainment system”, the Xbox One. That’s because EA and Microsoft announced a new partnership for the Xbox One that includes, FIFA, Madden, NBA Live and, thank jeebus, the UFC.

Enough Already With The Manti Te’o Jokes

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.21.13

It has been a little more than four months since that insane Deadspin article blew open one of the most absurd hoaxes in sports, at least in this Internet era, as it revealed that Lennay Kekua, the reported dead girlfriend of Notre Dame star Manti Te’o, was the fabrication of a man named Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Sure, we all had a ton of additional questions and would have loved to have a little more insight into how a grown man fell for such a trick, but Te’o and Tuiasosopo sort of told their stories and were content to leave us believing that Te’o is just a big, dumb schmuck.

Of course, between that January article and today, plenty of other things happened in sports and we’ve turned our attention elsewhere, because we thought that we’d beaten this joke into oblivion. That suggests, however, that sports fans are all on the same wavelength, and obviously Te’o jokes were going to be made during and after the NFL Draft. But today? Talk about timely.

Macho Man Randy Savage’s Family Celebrated His Life At Olive Garden

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.21.13

As I mentioned in yesterday’s award-winning Watch This piece – it took home “Best Tasting Bacon Dish” at Paula Deen’s family picnic – Macho Man Randy Savage, or Randy Poffo as his family knew him, passed away two years ago after he suffered a heart attack while driving with his wife in Tampa, Florida. For a lot of children of the 80s like myself, Macho Man was obviously one of the WWF’s biggest icons, alongside Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and, of course, Koko B. Ware.

But he was also a family man, and as all of his fans celebrated his legacy yesterday, his brother and mother also honored his memory in their own special way – with a lunch at Olive Garden.

With Leather’s Watch This: We Still Miss You, Macho Man Randy Savage

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.20.13

Randy Poffo, AKA Macho Man Randy Savage, passed away two years ago to the day, so I thought I’d honor him with his touching rap tribute to “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig, as someone dubbed it over his classic highlight reel. I wouldn’t have remembered unless the SI Vault Twitter feed reminded me of Randy’s classic photo from his days as a St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguer. Why I’ve never ordered a customized Poffo jersey is beyond me.

As a Cardinals fan, I’m supposed to be classier and more intelligent than other baseball fans, but in this regard I seem to have really missed the mark. I’ll work on that.

What Would Ryan Lochte Do? – Episode 5: ‘… If He Was Canceled?’

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.20.13

At one time or another, someone in any group of friends will eventually mutter some sort of variation of this phrase: “We should have our own reality show.” I have little doubt that such a phrase is how E!’s latest monkey humping a football reality series, “What Would Ryan Lochte Do?”, was created and developed, because Ryan and his friends (The Lochterage) truly believe that they are the bros above all bros.

The problem is, of course, that most people suck and are, therefore, not entertaining at all. This is the depressing reality that the Lochterage seems to ignore as their series slowly spirals toward its eighth and final episode. When the show ends, Ryan and his friends will probably go on believing that they truly are “living life to the fullest” as they play volleyball in Gainesville apartment complexes or fire paintballs at each other in an open field.

But in reality, they will just be some bros doing bro things, and the sooner they realize that, the sooner they’ll be able to stop convincing themselves that they ever had more than three episodes of material.

UFC Round-Up: UFC On FX 8 Results And The Bleak Future Of UFC 161

Written by Ashley Burns / 05.20.13

In case you were unable to join us for Saturday’s free fights at UFC on FX 8, you missed business as usual in the UFC’s Middleweight division. Vitor Belfort defeated former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold via a spin-kick knockout in the first round, meaning that all signs kind of point to a Silva-Belfort II event in the near future – that is, if Chris Weidman doesn’t pull off an upset when he faces Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 162.

As for the rest of the event, you can read the results after the jump, as well as some other big UFC news and headlines of the day, including whether or not that Silva-Belfort rematch will actually happen.
